Those are three different elephants. Let's focus on the athletic one.
I believe the athletic department should benefit the athletes students alumni fans and general community around Akron. Giving the taxpayers of Ohio a good gameday experience could make them believe their hard earned money being spent on public universities is a good thing.
A paved highway makes taxpayers feel good. A pothole filled highway makes taxpayers bitter. The old scoreboard was a pothole filled highway.
I don't know what the roots of college athletics are. There has always been a level of sleaze in athletics. There is a level of sleaze in everything.
I would like to see a separate division that provides a great experience for the athletes students alumni fans and general communities around the schools. With some thought and effort it shouldn't be that difficult or expensive. Stat with playing every game on Saturday when you can maximize the benefits to every group.
I know an executive who woke up on a Saturday and told his wife he was thinking about retiring. They agreed they had enough money. That Monday he gave his two week notice. Sometimes the easiest explanation is the answer.
Thanks for posting this. I threw up in my mouth a little when I saw the news.
If I may, I'd like to throw in some more adjectives. In addition to stupid, it's gross, disgusting, greedy, obnoxious, degrading, nauseating, and predictable.
It's a terrible experience. How bad is it? They are having trouble selling out their games. Look at their 2024 home schedule. It's laughable. I guess the Michigan game would be compelling if you had a small fortune to spend on a decent ticket. If not, the upper deck provides a great view of what might be a football game going on n below.
Awesome. Now fans won't have to feel the pride in seeing their team's logo at midfield. Instead, they can be inspired by a Draft Kings logo. It's all so gross.
My ideal game is a completely empty stadium, on a Saturday afternoon, with the exception of me and Mrs. GP1, the luckiest woman in the world. However, I know that isn't good for the program so I can only dream.
This game is degrading. It's degrading for Akron because of it trades money for humiliation. It's degrading for OSU because they are paying a team just to make money and humiliate them. It's gross. College football is just gross anymore.
Think of it like this. Howard Stern used to pay strippers to come in and he would throw balogna slices at their backsides. The women degraded themselves for money. Stern degraded himself by participating in a degrading event. I used to think it was funny. Now I think it's stupid. I used to think games against OSU were good for the program. Now I'm certain they are stupid and a sign the athletic director doesn't know what to do to change the culture of the program.
