Saying there is a building process is a fancy way of saying, "I have no idea what in the heck I'm doing and I'm hoping something good happens before the public figures that out." John Madden had only three rules: be on time, pay attention and play like Hell when I tell you to. Why only three? The more rules you put out, the more a person is able to break the rules so you spend all of your time trying to get the person to follow your rules instead of playing football. I like JMoorhead only has four rules. It's very simple and is how you establish a solid base in a program. There is also discussion about making the program something people in the community can look to as a source of pride through winning. Presenting a good product and winning is something the university can control. There is some discussion of attendance. Attendance is something the university can have influence over, but cannot control because it's hard to control people in a free society. It's why winning on the field isn't enough. The university has to put a full-ass effort into, on game day, making the University a cultural center point for the players, students, alumni, fans and general community. The presentation of the University as more than a football game on game day is something the University can control and needs to control. Finding ways to benefit these five groups on game day needs to be the foundation of success for the University and athletics has to be a part of it but not the only department owning this responsibility. Lastly, it's encouraging to see the University is putting various people in a forward facing position to the citizens of NE Ohio in a way that highlights the positive things going on at UofA.

The more I look at and read about this coaching staff, the more I like it. I hope those who stuck around embrace this staff because the experience they get as a football players will be changing for what I hope they feel is better. The experience is going to be more challenging, physically and intellectually. This is a D-1A staff. The days of D3 coaches is over and these new guys have a lot to teach you. Embrace it. I once worked for a division leader who told the management group I worked for, "We are going to change the people or we are going to change the people." Those who stuck around need to pay close attention to this sentence.

You are correct. However, JM has proven in the past he can deal with inexperienced staffs. He was a HC on 1AA and won. There are loads of inexperienced coaches at that level. It's all how you deal with them. Probably more handholding, but that's part of the G5 choice. If one looks around the MAC, this staff's make up isn't unusual. I welcome the fresh faces eager to make a name for themselves in the coaching ranks.

You are very close. Everyone gets offers now. I care about which schools are offering a guy the closer everyone gets to national signing day. The reason is a lot of players get dumped by P5 schools the closer one gets to signing day. This is part of the hard work of recruiting for G5 schools and why it's so important to get the right players. As everyone may know, I'm a big fan of Rick Neuheisel because he is a really smart guy who sees college football extremely clearly. He always says a recruit who you get right is what you are supposed to do, it's the ones you get wrong that kill your program. MAC coaches have a tight window of error with recruits so it is extremely important they know and can trust specific high school coaches around their recruiting area with feedback. Mistakes must be limited. Banking on the "star" rating systems can prove horrible for G5 programs. Recruiting isn't just about how a player interacts with coaches at a school. It's largely about gaining clarity around players from a lot of different sources and figuring out who can help you win. This is waaaaay harder to do at the G5 level than the P5 level. Bowden threw scholarships into the wind and went with anyone they stuck to. It was lazy beyond belief.

Very good college basketball game. I love a good comeback. Too bad the Zips fell short. My only complaint is I don't feel like the Zips gave themselves many options on their last 2-3 trips on offense. I like options. Maybe I just don't like the way college basketball is turning into the NBA. The NBA is awesome if you have NBA level talent.

What we know is it would prove ABC/ESPN can dupe sponsors into supporting absolute trash. I struggle to come up with a reason for why college football shouldn't discontinue the invitational tournament. It's junk. College football simply isn't designed for a "playoff" as there are no structures to promote even competition. A separate division would shield the G5 schools from their athletic directors and provide an environment where G5 schools can realistically complete against like schools.

There is a zero percent chance of this ever happening. The reality is this. The invitational tournament is absolute trash. More trash is not what college football needs.

He can afford to take a year off of coaching and maybe do some consulting work. In two weeks, it will be firing season in the NFL. He could pick up a coaching job then.

Let's not forget McDaniels was a clipboard holder for four years at Kent. If there was an NFL HOF for offense coordinators, he would make it on the first ballot.

I would caution against using exhibition games as your evidence. Cincinnati is the best P5 school I have ever seen. They played an Alabama team that is not nearly as good as AL teams in the recent past and they were soundly beaten in a meaningful game. Nobody wants 8-10 blowouts to take place in a 16 team playoff. If I wasn't too lazy to do it, it figure out the average margin of victory in the other divisions. I bet it is very high. Just bad entertainment. The country doesn't need more crap shoved at them. The fate of western civilization does not hinge on whether or not the college football invitational tournament is expanded. I think it would be terrible for the sport. What I do see are bowls allowing schools to use their football programs in a way that benefits the players, students, alumni, fans and general communities. There are lots of winners and happy people. Even the losing bowl teams give their fans enjoyment.

Sanders is showing himself to be a smart guy. A program needs to be built around winning. Don't build losing into a program. Don't tell me the money angle. HBCUs are in far worse financial condition than other state schools.

I've heard that Coach M sticking around Oregon to finish the season is generating positive opinions of him in high school coaching circles. Coaches want to believe a new coach is committed to a program when they advise a recruit to consider a school. His commitment to Oregon makes high school coaches believe he will be committed to Akron. Anything can happen, but this is a good start.

I saw a few minutes of both invitational tournament games. Cincy put up a decent fight but didn't have the firepower to really compete. There was nothing compelling about the second game after watching for 10 minutes at the Green Turtle on Amelia Island. If the powers that be think the second two games are good for college football, they need immediate psychiatric help. If they think more of the second two games are good for college football, they need immediate institutionalization. I'll be interested to see what the television ratings were for that crap. I hope the ratings were terrible so there will be no incentive to increase the volume of crap. I went to the Gator Bowl yesterday. It was fun. Got back to my hotel, showered and went to downtown Fernandina Beach for the annual shrimp drop and fun. If you can find things to do in life other than sitting around waiting for 8 hours of crap to be shoveled through a television in your direction, more fun can follow. Meaningless is a relative term. For Purdue and TN fans it wasn't meaningless. College football fans are looking at Bowl season all the wrong way.

Michigan was a problem. He didn't get fired after Michigan. They could have fired him after Michigan. Losing the Outback Bowl badly after losing to Michigan was the problem. Would have survived another year regardless of the loss to Michigan. Michigan is just a state shaped like a mitten at the bottom. Michigan does have some good snowmobiling thought even though it has nothing to do with football. The MAC plays in a great bowl game in Michigan.

My bad. Forgot about OK. Shows how disinterested I was in the game. I struggle to put any importance into a teams performance in a bowl game. Nothing at stake. Disinterested seniors. Opt outs. Developmental period for underclassmen. The list goes on. John Cooper was probably the last coach to get fired for bowl performance and think about how long ago that was.

What it tells me is that around 6 out of every 10 who enter do not belong in college. This is about four players for every team in D1. The number isn't unrealistic. It's approximately 5% of every team's scholarship players. Schools can't pay nil money. NIL has just moved money around and brought it into the open. Years ago, a player would get clothes, a car, furnished apartment, ets valued at $80,000. Today, they get the money and they can buy their own.

Stop worrying about whether or not local AM radio talks about Akron. AM sports radio is dying across the country and NE Ohio is no different. Moving on to how people generally view the University. Stop worrying about how they have viewed it and worry about how people can view it in the future. Akron is a good school with thousands of alumni in NE Ohio who know it's a good school. Akron seems to have turned the corner on feeding the news stories that can only be viewed as negative and started to highlight the positives. This is a good thing.
