Joe Moorhead Officially Hired as Head Football Coach
GP1 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
I hate the soullessness of electronic tickets. I used to get a great package of goodies that came with my Wake Forest tickets. Beautiful printed tickets, parking passes, stickers, a pin signifying how many years you were a season ticket holder and one year it all came wrapped in a flag you could fly in your yard. Now, parking passes and an email about how to get your tickets. 🤮 -
Keeping up with the Three D's (Dambrot, Dru & Duquesne)
GP1 replied to dirtyolcrowe's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I hear he has a wicked spin move he calls The Wheel and can really fire up a crowd. -
Expanding? No. Contracting? Yes. College football should go back to a BCS style selection of two teams. It was only half as insulting as the current structure. For those of you who may be Kent graduates, 4/2=2.

There is an "Option C". Watch something else or just do something else. This is the option more people seem to be picking. Last year's semi finals, on New Years Eve, had the lowest combined ratings in history. The television networks are shoveling crap into our living rooms, people are realizing it and deciding to do something else with their time. Shoveling an even larger pile of crap into our living rooms isn't going to make the situation any better. Last New Years Eve I went to the Gator Bowl that morning at 11AM. After the game we went back to the hotel on Amelia Island, changed for the night, went to the little town there to watch the annual Shrimp Drop festivities, went to dinner and then went to the Green Turtle. We saw very little of either invitational tournament game and what we did see was pure crap. A rickety electric shrimp hanging from a crane was more exciting than either game. In fact, anywhere we went and there were televisions, nobody was really paying any attention. The logic behind expanding the college football invitational tournament can only be drummed up by people who took a few too many shots to the head while playing football. There is little evidence to suggest an expanded tournament will produce better games. There is little evidence to suggest expanding the tournament will produce better long term ratings. There is little evidence to suggest the amount of money the G5 schools will make in the tournament will have a meaningful impact in leveling the playing field against P5 school. In fact the opposite is true, the games are getting worse along with the ratings and the money imbalance is growing. It's utter insanity.

The transfer portal will improve the quality of G5 players faster than a fantasy and it still won't be enough.

I feel a great deal of satisfaction raising taxes on others.
-
I'd be all for increasing taxes on Ohioans to make this happen. If you do the math, it wouldn't take much more I'm taxes per household in Ohio to make that happen.
-
Do you get excited about watching Alabama destroy a #16 team worse than they would #4 team.
-
Depends on the definition of "free". The taxpayers of Ohio are supporting MAC athletics so the price has been paid. Why shouldn't they get general admission tickets to a game or two? Reserved seats are something different.

Clemson is a historically good program, but not a great program. If they left the ACC for the SEC, they would immediately become the Virginia Tech of the SEC. It took a few years for VaTech to become irrelevant, but they were successful. University of South Carolina was once in the ACC and left for what they thought were greener pastures in the SEC. Now they are little more than, or maybe not even as good as Kentucky. Clemson had be careful of what they wish for or they will become another South Carolina.

When there is more money to be made in the Big 10, ND will join and the Big 10 will be glad to have them. It's getting close to that point now. The ND alumni association can make up the difference short term but it can't last forever.

The Mac/cusa etc will combine. It will be in their own division. The AAC and MW, once the good teams are skimmed off, will be a shell of their current self. They will play with cusa etc. There will be no bridge. Once the dust settles, the P4 schools will burn down the bridges behind them. Embrace what is happening. It is a good thing.

Class of '23 Offers & Verbal Commits
GP1 replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I almost never comment on recruiting for a couple reasons. First, I basically don't care and only care about what a player does in uniform on gameday for the Zips. My second reason is the recruiting discussion frequently falls into the "stars discussion" and I simply do not understand it. You have provided a very good explanation for the "stars". Your post is probably the best I have every seen and I still don't get why I should take them seriously. I simply don't understand why the people who run these websites should be taken seriously, because I don't even know who they are. I will now go back to rarely commenting on recruiting. -
It is not a minor league. It's a television show produced by the organizations running college football now, the TV networks. It is similar to baseball's minor leagues in that very few will ever make much money or have a realistic shot at the highest level. It's better in that a player may be able to make a little money while getting a free education. I'd tell the networks this. If you want me to watch more college football on television, do me a couple of favors. First, fit the games in the 3 hour time slots. Reduce the amount of time referees talk on heads replaying plays. Second, please, please, please get the clock moving. Many prime time games are lasting over 4 hours. It's insanity. I left the ACC Championship last year at the strike of 10 PM when the last second ran off the second quarter in a game that started at 8 PM.

If anyone can explain to me what Fantheon is without making my head explode, I'm listening.

While it is true people love an underdog story, that's not the central question. The question the people running college football (television networks) are asking is, "Will more people tune in to watch NIU or Baylor get destroyed by Alabama?". The answer is obvious. There is no room in the future for MAClike schools in the college football playoffs. The sooner we can carve out our own path, the better off we will be.
-
The people who believe in this nonsense believe Americans will tune into a game between two horrible teams if there is something to play for. In reality, the ratings for last year's national championship game fell well below expectations and previous years. People simply aren't buying this gimmick and it's a game between two great teams.
-
Each network has at least three east coast time slots for games on Saturday. That covers six teams. Networks are mostly: ESPN Espn2 ESPN News ESPNU ABC CBS CBS sports Fox Fox Sports NBC BTN ACC Network SEC Network ESPN + Throw in some of these networks will play primetime west coast games, there are plenty of national television spots.
-
Because there are more slots to fill than super conference teams.
-
I love Rick Neuheisel, but he takes this relegation idea seriously and is wrong. It's actually a really stupid idea that assumes a senior starter on a horrible college football team cares about winning and not just getting out of the season and moving on. The dynamics are very different between professional soccer and college football.
-
Left out of what? Most schools are not capable of winning the national championship. I actually hope this happens.
-
The current playoff games are horrible entertainment. Why do you want more crap shoveled into your living room through your television.
-
I was in Akron a couple of weeks ago and went by the stadium. There were giant bags full of sand in the corner of one of the parking lots. Did they have a "Giant Bags Full Of Sand Cam"?

I think it is becoming most like the NFL in that television ratings are driving decisions. The networks aren't asking, "How do we get the die hard fan to watch more NFL?". They are asking, "How do we get the fans of football who see the NFL as their favorite television show to watch more games?". We all know someone who is a die hard fan of NFL Team X and really doesn't watch NFL beyond that team. The NFL is less concerned about this fan and more concerned about attracting a person who will watch any NFL game for 9 hours on Sunday. The Red Zone Network attracts this fan. All of the games attract degenerate gamblers. A lot of these fans just like hanging out with friends in a bar on Sundays watching football and having some beers. OSU vs USC attracts more of this type of fan than OSU vs Indiana or OSU vs Toledo. The television networks know this and since they are running college football (If the networks aren't running college football, who is?), we get the results we are seeing today.

What is your realistic definition of a successful 2022 Season?
GP1 replied to GoZips86's topic in Akron Zips Football
I can't think of a more difficult season to guesstimate an upcoming record. I'm guessing a 4 win season with a team that actually looks like it knows what it is doing. In 2023 I fully expect a bowl season with 2024 competing for the league championship with the final four games being meaningful.
