ziptrumpet87
I wonder if Big Steve Swiech will play??Is he not healthy, or has coach D just kept him on the bench so far? I was looking forward to possibly seeing him go up against that big 320# guy from Canisius.

skip-zip
He is right. This is not the Winthrop team that we played last year. I remember that game well....we were in pretty good shape, and then they put the hammer to us over the last few minutes of the game. Lets hope for better results this time, and hope that we have found a way to resolve some of the issues from the last two games.

This game is two unknown quantities playing against each other. It could come down to who has the most raw talent, and maybe a little home-court advantage. He is a beast on one end of the court but still needs to come into his own. My source says, and I quote, "He just needs to realize what a beast he can be."Looking forward to French's call on the game tonight. I have some other stuff to take care of that will prohibit my attendance.
RowdyZip
There's a couple Gameday threads goin...this one seems to be getting the most attention today. Several folks have guessed what the line on tonights game would be, but as I've learned there are no posted lines on Big South games (for whatever reason). I did however come across THIS which generally comes close to the posted Vegas lines. If you don't want to waste your time, the experts at CBS Sportsline have us winning by a margin of 71-56. Very interesting...
RowdyZip
Ok...now CHECK THIS OUT. This is really cool, if you've never visited Accuscore.com. They also have the Zips winning by 15 points. I believe they simulate the game 1000 times and take the average.

Quickzips
Now thats a little more like it.Nice game by the Zips. Not a great game, not the best game I expect them to play all year, but enough to give us some hope.Hero of the game has to be Roberts. He's a player, and he hasn't gotten a lot of attention. 17 points, 9-9 from the FT line and that steal on the inbounds pass late. He does all the little things to help you win.A little surprised to see Nik starting tonight, but he did well with it. Actually surprised we didn't see more of him. He's got a nice game at both ends of the floor and gives you a ton of hustle. Possibly Zeke's long term frontcourt runningmate???Biggest thing to me was defense and turnovers. We played some really good defense all night long and we only turned the ball over 7 times. That's a recipe for winning.Still not shooting quite as well as you would like to see, but it will come. How nice was it to see this team put Winthrop away at the FT line. That is something we haven't been able to do a whole lot of the last few years.Overall, great win for the Zips! On to Pitt!
ZippyforPresident
Just got back from the game. Nice win Zips! This team is looking better every game. Hopefully this trend continues. And yes, Cventinovic looked pretty good in his start. If this game was any indication, he looks quite capable of being a very solid player for the next few years. The team made a much better showing tonight defensively, hopefully this trend continues also. Roberts was probably the player of the game tonight. Linhart was stellar on defense and hit a few nice shots, especially that drive to the basket with the foul. Also a pretty nice game for the McKnights. Now to slay the dragon that is Pitt. Bring it on. Hopefully it turns out to be a good one. I'm really interested to see how this team performs against one of the best teams in the nation.

ZippyforPresident
Did Big Steve play??Nope, no minutes for Swiech tonight. I am looking forward to seeing him play though. skip-zip
I do feel a little bit more encouraged about us having some level of success this year after what happened tonight...as opposed to what I saw the last two games. Here's a few thoughts....1) If Bardo can score a couple of baskets a game in the paint....JUST A COUPLE...that would open some things up for us that would help us tremendously. He has to be viewed as at least a minimal scoring threat for our inside-out offense to really work come time for conference play, when we'll really need it. 2) We can't go into conference play without a point guard who can really, truly quarterback our offense, for the 2nd year in a row, if we expect to be competitive. Steve started the game tonight as that man, but I don't see him filling that role long term. It looked like Keith may have tried to go with the guy with the most experience in that role tonight, and right now, that would be Steve Mc. Can we get Ronnie up to speed over the next 10 games? I sure hope so. 3) Whew....what a relief to see that we are indeed capable of grabbing rebounds. 4) By about the mid point of last season, I really saw Chris Mc as the only other guy who could join Nate this year as a major contributor. It's really starting to look that way. Will someone else (and we need it) emerge? Darryl R. showed tonight that he could possibly be that other key piece of the puzzle.5) Am I the only one who has been surprised about the contributions of Cvetinovic? Many of us have been saying this all along....at least a couple of these freshmen need to become contributors...quickly...in order for us to be competitive this year. Let's hope we continue to get these contributions from Nik. Just for the record, I am not ready to back off of my 10-15 win prediction after what I saw tonight. Remember, some of the teams we are going to beat during non-conference play (including this year's Winthrop version) are not in the same league as most of the teams we will face in conference play. But, I still hope for the best.
skip-zip
Pitt drilled Miami by 30 points last night, and that's pretty hard to do that to Miami...the way they play. Keith thinks they might be a best team in the country. And they are huge inside. Lets hope we don't face a similar fate Friday night. Just for some nostaliga ....for my fellow old timers......we played a game against a good Pitt team in Pittsburgh in 1986 behind a couple of guys named Boyce and McLaughlin where we actually had a chance to tie with a 3 pointer at the end. Then, they came here in 1987 to play us at the Richfield Coliseum when there are one of the best teams in the country.....and we took them to the wire.Do we maybe have some magic against these guyes? Lets hope.

Hilltopper
Hey Winthrop fan, what the heck was up with your coach last night? He went into a major rant at the end of the game. His anger seemed to be directed at Dambrot. I didn't see anything that would have set him off like that.

His anger seemed to be directed at Dambrot. I didn't see anything that would have set him off like that. I didn't see it. However, all the post game quotes I saw from their coach were civil. C McKnight and a Winthrop player got a little chippy when Winthrop was in Hack-a-Shaq mode at game's end, but that was quickly diffused. We had an easy break-away dunk at the end of the game, and Roberts pulled it out and dribbled away the final several seconds. Not much to complain about there.Hopefully we can continue with a home/home relationship in the future. I enjoyed the game.
