Nice write up by Terry Pluto in the PD. :Dhttp://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index...._without_j.html

Since I've been here, we've not taken a single junior-college player," he said. "Nick Dials is our only transfer from another school [to receive a scholarship]. I'm not saying I'll never take a junior-college kid, but he'd have to be the right kid. I want to make sure that he's a good kid, that he'll graduate and that he fits in with what we're doing."
"When you're used to winning 20 games and you're sitting at 9-8 and you're playing all these freshmen trying to win the MAC, you wonder if you should have taken some transfers," he said. "Early in my career, I'd have brought in at least three juco kids if I knew I was facing this kind of season."

I enjoyed the article. I've just always said on here that I think it's unfair to lump all JC kids together as a negative. I initially went to a JC, made some great friends, and some of those guys did move on to bigger schools, had nice careers, and finished their 4 year degrees. But at the same time, there were some guys who had opportunities, and blew them. I trust that KD would take one if it was the right guy, and I think that's the right attitude. Don't forget...our last championship team was anchored by a JC transfer.

So what? JD has a MAC Championship and KD doesn't. What's the point?Akron had 5 JC players on their football team last year out of roughly 85 scholarships (5.9% of the team....not exactly overflowing with JC players). How do I know this?....I took 30 seconds to go to GoZips.com and count. There are roughly 15 scholarships on a basketball team. That means there are 5.5 times as many scholarships in football compared to basketball. It would only take the basketball team having one JC player on their team to proportionally equal/exceed the number of JC players on the football team.If KD brought one JC player to Akron and equaled/exceeded the proportion of football, would that make him a bad coach? It sounds to me that if he could get a JC player he wanted, he would take him. Does being open to the idea of JC players make KD a bad coach? The answer to these two questions is NO.

The Zips are 12-8 overall, 3-3 in the MAC, having played only two home conference games before Central Michigan comes to Rhodes Arena at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Once a Beacon Journal writer, always a Beacon Journal writer. Game begins @ noon, TP.

He lists Zeke at 6'11" too. I think we should list Zeke at 6'6" in the media guide to fool other teams. ;)

Marcel Boyce...the OVC Player of the Year in 1986 when we won the conference championship, and made our only appearance in the big dance. I'm an old man Blue and Gold...I was a senior at Akron. It was an exciting season. I'll remember it forever, and sure hope that some of you folks get to experience something like this very soon as well.

AMEN! I was a senior in HS in 1986. I've lived through over 20 years of "building". I sure would like to see some results.

That was the year Akron outplayed scUM and still lost somehow. What a game it was.

Thanks for helping me out....If games were 33 minutes long, then maybe we did out play them. Unfortunately, it was a 40 minute game. Marcel B. (favorite playa) always brings back great memories and that team will always be my favorite. Boyce, Roberts, McLaughlin, Schutz, Dowdell, Holmes, etc. What a fun team!

Ah Yes...the memories. And remember, McLaughlin and Roberts were both freshmen. And Russell Holmes was a football player who played post at 6'-3" tall. It was certainly a coaching job that helped launch Huggins into the big time a few years later. If my memory is correct, as the 15th seed in the tourney, we took the halftime lead on a very loaded #2 Wolverine team. We were indeed able to stay within striking distance most of the rest of the way, but faded in the final 5 minutes, and lost by either 4 or 6 points.

If memore serves me correctly, we lost by 6 points.UA outplayed them the entire game. They just got the luck when the game was on the line. That was one of the best and most exciting games, in any sport, that I remember watching. That team with McLaughlin, Roberts, then Buford was so fun to watch.
