Hilltopper
Here are some highlights of Howard.Erick Howard
zff
Some info from a friend of mine who is a Hoover football fan and season ticket holder. Howard has tons of talent as a running back, but his true position would be inside linebacker where his size and speed made him a devistating tackler. He didn't play every down on defense during highschool, just the ones that counted. He has been in alot of trouble during his HS career and currently lives with his HS head coach. His mother is a real piece of work. She moved to Vegas for a while and left him with the coach. Since the move things have improved academic wise, but maybe not enough to graduate. He has an older brother who is currently attending Akron. You need to check the info on his mom. It was printed in the Canton Rep his mother left North Canton to help Erick's sister in Washington State. He went with her and was going to stay out there but he wanted to come back in NC. His teammates paid for a one way ticket so he could come back. He missed a lot of summer ball and did not being the season as a starter. His mother gave the coach permission for him to live there while she was out of state. You also left out the part where his father was killed in an industrial accident a few years ago. I am sure that playes a big part in his getting into trouble.Link to Story

I think he would be a great recruit for the Zips.
Blue & Gold
There was a rather nice article about Howard in either the Beacon or the Repository, and in it he said that he knew he had to get his act together and focus on his work and stay out of trouble. He wasn't dismissive about his past at all. So I took that as a very good sign that he is intelligent and mature enough to understand what he's got to do to get ahead in life. Zips Win!
II know I will get bashed for this, but Although I went to UA and OSU, if Harvard would have offered me a full ride, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. That makes two of us who are disappointed that Harvard didn't offer... Hilltopper
My source tells me that Howard has gained between 30-50lbs since the season ended and we're not talking muscle. It seems that being "Mr Football" has gone to his head,Err stomach.

Sergeant Zip
I heard OSU said his offer will be there if his grades improve. If that's the case (and I'm not positive that it is...), I don't want him here either. It'll be David Harvey all over again.Erick Howard scored a 23 ACT in June. If that's the case (and I'm not positive that it is...), I don't want him here either. It'll be David Harvey all over again.Erick Howard scored a 23 ACT in June.Honestly. I think his GPA is hurting him more than his ACT. He now has an overall of a 20 ACT. Not so hot, but I've known kids with ACT scores only a few points higher than that who got into OSU for academics no problem.
ZachTheZip
His GPA is what's keeping him from getting an offer from OSU.FWIW, when I took the ACT many years ago, I was told that 20 is the average score for high school juniors. I don't know if that's changed since then.
ndzeigler
ACT average composite score 2008 was 21.1 nationally. In ohio, it was 21.
Zipmeister
ACT average composite score 2008 was 21.1 nationally. In ohio, it was 21.7Strangely enough average ACT scores are completely unrelated to the elevation of the above two geographic areas. The approximate mean elevation of the country is 2,500 feet above sea level and the approximate mean elevation of Ohio is 853 feet above sea level. Hilltopper
Here's another rumour concerning Howard. I heard that he may have a Hernia that might need surgury before the season starts.
johnnyzip84
I don't know about the hernia, but he sure lit it up last weekend (278 yds/3 TDS) against Lexington. Apparently he was at tOSU this past weekend as well.Scout Link
Mhay
I would suggest anyone that has any doubts about Erick Howard's ability to take a Friday night and drive 10 miles south. He has almost 1000 yards in 5 games and should break the stark county career rushing record by the end of the year. He usually only plays offense for 3 quarters. He is also a darn good middle linebacker. I hope he goes to Akron so I can continue to wach him. He has already gotten offers from Cincy and others. He did get in trouble for a fight in Middle school but has not been in trouble the last 4 years. His mother did not go to Vegas. She went to Washington state to help Erick's sister with a newborn baby while her husband was deployed to Iraq. It was highly publicized. He plays both ways most all games that are close. Sergeant Zip
HOWARD 2009 REPOSITORY PLAYER OF THE YEAR.He is Stark County’s career leader in rushing, touchdowns and scoring.During his senior season at Hoover High School, Vikings running back and linebacker Erick Howard:• rushed for 2,056 yards and 27 touchdowns, both tops in Stark County; • finished his high school career with a 6,013 yards, 79 touchdowns and 478 points, all Stark County records;• led the Vikings defense with 102 tackles and caused four fumbles. Blue & Gold
Thanks for the link, Sarge. The end of the article states that he is not academically eligible for a D-1 scholly & will likely have to go the prep school route. That actually may end up working to our advantage, because I have to think this year's recruiting class is going to be awful. Give the new regime a year or two, though, and we could possibly see Mr. Howard repping the blue & gold.

ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
To an Akron or Cincinnati and then out after a year? No thanks, superstar. If you decide to attend UA and play at UA, commit yourself. Otherwise don't waste our time.
UA Fan
I'd rather use that 1 year roster spot to be developing someone who's going to stick with the program for 4-5 years. Maybe an FCS would take him for a year.
