72 Roo Posted December 18, 2009 Report Share Posted December 18, 2009 Showing bias to the ACC, George Gelnovatch, the coach of Virginia, was named national soccer coach of the year by Soccer America. Virginia had three loses and three ties going into the NCAA finals. Apparently, being undefeated and untied, prior to the final four, against the hardest RPI in the country was not enough to get Caleb Porter his just recognition. During the run of all these victories Caleb's boys scored 55 goals and gave up 7. That wasn't enough. So you reward a coach, who after the first 20 minutes of the national championship, decides he can't play with the Zips and he drops 9 field players in front of his goal to stop Akron and play for a shootout. Our coach respect's the game and his players too much to sink to that level to win a championship. He playe attacking, dominant soccer.Virginia won the game and the championship. So be it. Congratulations. But don't say that was great coaching compared to what Caleb did. We've got the coach of the year! End of discussion. It does make you wonder what Caleb would need to do to win COTY? Was the COTY picked prior to the NCAA tourney?Lolla turned tail and ran to Louisville when he felt the Zips program couldn't overcome the NCAA's "non-BCS" soccer bias.Caleb decided to stay, and force the NCAA to respect the Zips.Caleb's omission proves there's a lot of work remaining to be done on the Zips road to respect. But his track record shows he's the guy to break those barriers.How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time....I think Caleb's about 8% away from being a member of "The Clean Plate Club." Zip Watcher Posted December 18, 2009 Report Share Posted December 18, 2009 We played 2 ACC programs and couldn't score a regulation goal.Both teams bunkered for the second half of the games because they knew they were toast if they didn't out number the Zips in the box.This with the Zips 2 best playmakers (Ampi & Nanchoff) not playing or not at full strength.2 ACC programs played the Zips and didn't score a regulation goal. And the Zips didn't come close to bunkering in either game.I'd take my chances with the Zips playing an ACC schedule. They clearly outplayed both UVA and UNC in regulation & overtime. Do they run the table? Who knows .. but they'd have a better chance of running the table in the ACC than anyone currently in the ACC or in the NCAA for that matter.Go Zips!!
