GoZips.com football staff pageIt gets updated as the hires become official.
I'm pleasantly shocked they're updating it in practically real time. 5 GA's(?)...that will help keep the costs down. Is it good to hire unit coaches before the coordinator? I guess RI is being very selective about a DC.
Its possible that some of the hires won't be announced until the bowl season is over.

Currently need, a D-line coach (Bryant Young, but until he's on there I don't count it), Defensive Backs, Receivers, D-Coordinator and an O-line coach.Maybe a waterboy :cheers:edit* can't help but notice that we are getting more press in Chicago than we are in Akron.
I agree we could use a waterboy. I wonder if this guy is available.post-142-1261537177_thumb.jpg

True. The hiring of assistants hasn't seemed as speedy as the OP suggests.

Is it possible that we have an offer to a DC that also may be in the running for a HC job?

and I don't think anybody here would dispute the need to develop better relations with the local high schools.
I would. I think our relationship with the local schools is good enough. In the past, all we get from local high school coaches in NE Ohio is pissing and moaning when we will not give a scholarship to one of their DII players. We don't need to pay someone sixty thousand a year for that.

Yep. They bitch and moan if Akron doesn't offer, then if their guy gets a bigger offer, they turn on Akron as the little school.

And that's why we need to hire somebody who can explain that to the high school coaches. Somebody who can change how it works.

We can hire this guy right after we dip into our bottomless pit of money and hire a special teams coordinator. We could send out a mass mailer to all coaches saying UofA is not running a welfare agency for talentless kids and save a Hell of a lot more money than hiring a someone to do this. What the heck would we call the position.....Recruiting Coordinator of Whiners? Most coaches in high school know if their players are good enough or not. The problem is the parents. We don't need to pay someone to explain to the coaches what they already know. The problem is this. A lot of high school coaches are, either formally or informally, partly evaluated on how many players they get scholarships for to D-1A schools so they press coaches for scholarships. Their motivation is different than ours. They don't care if the Zips suck or not because their kid isn't good enough to make them a winner. All the Zips coaches need to do is have an adult conversation with these guys telling them their player isn't good enough to play D-1A football.

FIU: FootballScoop has learned that former Akron linebackers coach Vince Okruch will interview for the FIU defensive coordinator job. We are tyring to confirm another coach as well.
Notre Dame: FootballCoachScoop has BREAKING NEWS and is the FIRST TO REPORT that Head Coach Brian Kelly has hired Mitch Browning (Tennessee Graduate Assistant) as the new Offensive Line Coach for the Irish.
Double ouch.

I think we should also create a new position on the staff: Director of High School Relations. Lots of schools are listing someone with this title on their staff these days, and I don't think anybody here would dispute the need to develop better relations with the local high schools.
I think we need to get a leg up on other schools: forget high school relations cause lots of schools are doing that. We need someone in charge of junior high /middle school relations. This is the only way we will get ahead.

But we already do that. How many middle-school and grade school kids have we seen at the JAR doing some crappy dance routine as the half-time "entertainment" for basketball games?

If there is a problem, it will take care of itself with high school kids playing at Info & seeing the facilities in person. We can spend $ much wiser than making this someones job!?! Now back to the topic, who's going to be my DC?
This is a few weeks old, but apparently Illinois co-DC Mike Mallory interviewed for the DC job here at some point (link 1).link 1Also, it looks like JD has interviewed for the passing coordinator spot at UC (link 2).link 2

Are you saying we should start recruiting dancers as football players or are you saying we should hire the person who has lined up this talent for the basketball games as the junior high/middle school relations person for the football team?

News story from Knoxville TN news sentinel....................................................................................Mitch Browning not gone yet!! But it might not be long until the Tennessee graduate assistant is headed elsewhere. The coaching veteran appears to be headed to Notre Dame to join new coach Brian Kelly, though a deal hasn't been finished yet. A source in the UT program indicated it might be done as early as this afternoon."I don't know what's going to happen with that," Vols coach Lane Kiffin said. "I'm sure Mitch is going to get a great job. He's done an unbelievable job, and he's been an offensive coordinator and a line coach at many places and put up a bunch of good numbers."Obviously he was a big help for us this year, leading the SEC in least sacks allowed and having a 1,300-yard rusher."And from Coachscoop.com today.......................................................................Akron:Our sources tell us that Head Coach Rob Ianello has hired Tennessee Graduate Assistant, Mitch Browning, as an assistant coach on his new staff.Sounds like a solid hire to me.

From what I remember, Mitch was one of the finalists for the Akron job when JD was hired. Rob said that he would take his time with the staff and it appears that after his first 3-4 guys, that is what he is doing. One benefit unlike when JD came in, he has worked for several different head coaches and with more assistants. Seeing what people do first hand is the best way to see what they can do.

Actually, with regard to seeing what people can do, there is no statistically significant difference between seeing what people do second hand compared to seeing what they do first hand.

Have we gotten official confirmation from the university about Browning being hired. I asked the Volquest mod over the weekend if he had heard if Mitch to Akron was official, and he said that he did not. He speculated that Browning may be a candidate on the University of Kentucky staff now that Rich Brooks is retiring. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

No confirmation on Browning to the Zips as yet, but this link says the Joker is taking over for Brooks at Kentucky. There is no truth to the rumors regarding the Penguin and the Riddler being hired as OC and DC respectively.Link
