If you have no worries, you really aren't a huge Zips hoops fan. Your heart isn't in it. Your bar is low.
Guilty.Does anyone watch Mad Men? There was a scene last season when the young red haired girl, Peggy, was trying to explain to Don an Aqua Net commercial she designed. She kept saying, "Then this happens...then this happens.....then this happens." Don looks at her and say, "Everytime you say 'then this happens' you lose me."Maybe the Zips problem is this simple, and I have been saying it for years. They play a defensive game. When you play an offensive game it is very simple. You focus on putting the little orange ball through the little orange ring. Outscore the other team and you win. When you play a defensive game, it sounds like Peggy..."You focus on double teams in the post, then the ball is thrown in, then you double team, then you hope the guy takes a bad shot, then you rebound, then you get the ball down court, then..." This logic assumes all of that is going to happen and then the guy with the ball on the offensive end is actually able to make a shot. In reality, they guy was brought here to focus on defense and not shooting.Defense can win a lot of regular season games when the competition ranges from very good to very bad. With defense, we should be able 100% of the games against the average to bad teams. Beat 50% of the good teams and the next thing you know you have 20 wins. We need teams that can outscore the good teams in critical situations. "But GP1, are you saying defense isn't important?" No, I'm just saying offense is critical in high profile games when things are close. In a close game, points become more important than defense. Points force the other team to match you shot for shot and it puts pressure on them.
I disagree. Focusing entirely on offense is a bad way to try and go about winning championships.

GP1 is saying, develop some scorers not just a stout defense. If you don't have shooters, then you shoot 31% in the second half and lose games.

Exactly.Even better yet, who is the closer? Everyone talks about Kobe Bryant being the best "closer" in the NBA. Who plays this role for the Zips? When the Zips need points, who can they turn to?

I suggested this a while back and I'm going to do so again ... can we please have a "pissed/crapped down their leg" emoticon created?! Maybe one of each? One could be used for minor offenses (pissed) and the other for the major ones (crapped).

RACER is up to his same old tactics. He can't form complete sentences, often forgets how to use the space bar, and struggles to use punctuation correctly.

There were three major contributing factors to tonight's hurtful loss. 1) Turnovers. Probably the number one culprit. <edited> 2) Free throw shooting. <edited> 3) Officiating. These clowns were from Mars. And, sorry previous poster, they were not bad both ways. They were far more biased against Akron than they were against Rhode Island. It was not only the bad calls; it was also the inexcusable "no calls" that kept Rhode Island from getting blown out of the (sic) gym. A prime example was official stopping play to admonish two players when the Zips were in the midst of a hot streak. That sure helped Rhode Island. There were several other situations that benefited Rhode Island. How the hell do you miss a player standing on the end line with the ball and not call him out of bounds. Oh, I see, that would have meant giving Akron possession. We cannot fix the ref crap. We will have to play through it again this year, The coaching staff can fixthe free throw shooting and ball handling.
I'll agree COMPLETELY. I believe i saw ONE time the entire night where their bench was upset about a call. I could count 20+ where there were calls that were made or not made that absolutely shocked me. I think i'm going to nominate those refs as "Worst Officiating Crew In JAR History".The worst part is, after playing 5 on 8 for the entire night against a very good team all we had to do was just make a few darn free throws and we win. That's too bad. Though i have to say anyone who thinks that URI is better than us is crazy, we had them on the ropes and they got bailed out over and over again tonight. If we can get a decent officiated game and make free throws we will finish very strong this season.
I have yet to see you not blame a loss on the refs. they must really hate akron haha.
Zippy5, for your benifit, please read item one stated above. Second item points to poor free throw shooting. Thirdfactor, the officiating. Without be laboring the point I offer two pieces of evidence. First one, the comments of RootforRoo44,who states that they agree with my assessment. Second, and much more damning of the officials was URI player Jamesmaking six drives to the basket where he took THREE steps to the basket. He scored all six times. The last three stepdrive was called traveling by the officials and the basket disallowed. The other ten points were allowed. Each time Jamesmade a three step drive the fans went crazy complaining loud and long. Those ten points were a HUGE factor in the Zips loss. Too bad you weren't at the game.

This means playing under control, not helter-skelter. For heaven's sake, let's get this right: Steve McNees is a dandy two guard (shooting guard). He is a mediocre point. Ronnie Steward simply needs more minutes.2) Free throw shooting. The statistics don't tell the story since we consistently miss the front end of one-n-ones. This has to be fixed. Certain players shoot free throws like they just don't care. They should be glad they don't play for me. Because I would have them so far down on the bench that they would never see the light of day. If you can't bother to make free throws you should NOT be on the floor.3) Officiating. These clowns were from Mars. And, sorry previous poster, they were not bad both ways. There are others that approach free throw shooting like they were taught as small children that making free throws just isn'tfair to the other team. Screw the other team. Make the free throws. Its like finding twenty dollar bills.Again tonight we saw Nikola drive to the basket. Just not often enough. It the guards are afraid to penetrate give the ball to Nic. It is wonderful to see a big man able to drive to the basket. He deserves more minutes.Hey, coaches, this last comment is for you. Remember the old adage that teams that press do not like being pressed? Well, Rhode Island is no exception. When we put full court pressure on them the onlything that saved them were their friends the refs. Put pressure on the ball. Have the nads to trust your kids.

i was there. the backcourt violation (timeout) was a ridiculous call. but we gave up WAY too many second chances, and missed too many FT's. we had many chances to take this game, despite the poor officiating.

Fact is the Zips weren't getting an NCAA at-large bid the minute our OOC schedule came out. Unless Drake, Niagra and Valpo magically started pushing for a top-25 ranking and the rest of our schedule majorly over-performed it wasn't going to happen. Win or lose over URI our NCAA tournament scenario's weren't going to change. You can debate whether or not that game will make a difference with the NIT, CBI, etc. committees. Quite frankly, I don't care. Those tournaments would be a step back for the Zips this year. We've been to the dance now, that has to be not only the goal but the expectation every year. Improvement this year would have been winning games like NC State, Texas A&M and Rhode Island, going undefeated or damn close to it in conference play and winning an NCAA tournament game or two. So far the Zips have struck out in all of those opportunities, mostly of their own doing.I agree with Cap'n. Rhode Island was not exactly a superior team to the Zips. They are built differently, that is for sure. And they run a different style on offense and on defense than the Zips do. But they aren't superior. That team was ripe for the pickings for the Zips and we crapped/pissed down our legs like we've done so many times before.
I agree with Quick. Saying Rhode Island is superior to the Zips is like saying the Zips are superior to Furman.

we can hash and rehash how are team blew the game and god knows how much it hurts to walk outta the jar like that. it hurt almost as bad as the soccer game for me for some reason.but, as far as moving forward and other issues with the game i really miss the one rowdie...his name escapes me...but during critical moments of games he would grab a mic and pump up the crowd or dress like a ref and pretend to be blind. we needed that last night. jimmy and nic made some layups and we were on a run abd the jar almost busted open in the first half. it WAS loud. yes it was not full. yes it was not even packed. but it was loud. in the second half when it was a 2 point game their was silence. yes everyone is upset to watch our beloved zips...and it hurts to say this...piss down their leg. but com'on we need some one out their to bring the crowd into it a g** d**n t shirt giveaway dosnt f*ckin do it!

The area I have highlighted has been my exact thought for many years. I think that so many negatives come out of this scenario. Lower revenue, publicity, SOS, RPI, and not enough quality competition to be ready when the opportunity arises to play a quality opponent. So why do we do it? Oh, I forgot. As some try to say, the regular season doesn't matter. Only the MAC tournament. I guess I can cancel my season tickets and just buy MAC tournament tickets for now on? I'm simply not satisfied anymore if our program continues to rest our hopes every year on the "anything can happen" weekend in Cleveland every March. Haven't we already learned this lesson? In just the last few years, we've lost that tournament as a big favorite, and won it as a #5 seed. We need to start putting ourselves in a position to have more control over our own destiny.

I agree. It is time to upgrade the OOC schedule. Just one home game against a RPI#75 to RPI#150quality team would have much better prepared the Zips for URI. Perhaps the coaches thought theyhad such opponents when they scheduled Drake, UIC and others. Unfortunately most schedules aremade a couple of years in advance. And most are multiple game contracts. You do not really know who will be hot or tank two-three years in advance. The best the Zips can do is put themselves in position to win by beating opponents. Wait, they alreadydo that. You start laying the hammer on opponents, especially at home, you soon wont be able to getquality opponents. Wait. We already have that problem.Let's give coach Peters a year or two to work his magic. Coach Peters has excellent experience havingpreviously done the scheduling for Ohio State. Wait. OSU schedules quite similar to the Zips. Only, the computer programs don't tank the Suckies.I would like to see Akron schedule better opponents with contracts that guarantee us home games.I am all for scheduling A-10 and MVC and C-USA schools. Two for ones with Big East schools wouldbe nice. Forget PITT. Talking about pissing down your leg. Jamie Dixon does not have the nads. Finally, its high time to recruit some stud players. Read that as "athletes". Mostly coach D findsbasketball players. Akron has just one "stud" player. And currently he is worth his weight in gold.We need four or five more studs similar to Jimmy Conyers. URI's starting guards were six-four and six-five. When the Zips get a six-five player you see himplaying the small forward. note: Name a stud player in the incoming class of recruits. They are all quality basketball players. Not a stud among them.

That may be true for football scheduling, but the majority of the basketball ooc schedule for next year will be put together between now and this summer. Still plenty of time to upgrade. I agree with your point about signing a 2 for 1, especially since we have gone on the road the last two years to BCS schools without a return game.

It's not like Coach D and staff aren't going after them - Adreain (sp?) Payne rings a bell of someone we tried to get, Markus Crider looks strong and Jakaar Sampson is another solid recruit we are targeting. So the effort is there, we just need some of the recruits to believe in the program enough to sign on the dotted line.

Euton is a high major caliber player.
Yes, a really nice basketball player. Stud? Not a chance. At best maybe a Nate Linhart clone.
Why did Gillespie offer Linhart? Just curious where the similarity is.

Totally different than Nate. He's bigger and stronger .. but won't be guarding the 2 or most 3's .. and he's a top flight shooter from outside. If I could snap my fingers and change one thing about this Zips team, it would be for one of our bigs to be able to consistently step back and hit the outside shot. Think about Falknor, but in a more well rounded (perhaps that's a poor description) hoops player. For instance if Nikola had the percentages and consistency to shoot around 33% from outside, it would really open the paint up. CMac has shown it in the past, but they're not dropping.Euton has the potential to be that type of contributor. Big so he can bang inside and guard bigs .. but a reliable shooter who can stroke it from outside, forcing the defense to stretch a little, giving Nik & Zeke more room to work.I remember a BG game at the JAR when Falknor was a senior .. he was in the midst of a crazy hot streak that season, I think he went 7 of 8 or something like that and forced Dakich to keep sitting his bigs (Matella I think) down because they couldn't, or wouldn't, get on the perimeter to guard a 6-9 guy like Falknor. He killed BG that night. Falknor shot in the neighborhood of 44% from outside that year, higher than his overall percentage. The difference between Falknor and Euton is Euton's overall basketball experience, more athleticism, and a determination to be a good defender. If Euton brings even close to the outside prowess that Falknor had and the reviews indicate Euton has .. it will add to the Zips offensive options tremendously.Go Zips!!

It was Herb Sendek at NC State that offered Linhart.

Couldn't agree more, when I
, Falknor is EXACTLY who I think of. I hope he shoots like Falknor, but is more athletic. That dude could hit a three anywhere on half a court. Hopefully Euton is a better student too.

Winthrop was just a little more talented than the Zips and pulled away at the end. Gonzage was more talented than the Zips and pulled away at the end. I'm sure there are other examples. No worries here.
Yes there are other examples...Dayton, VCU, Nevada, hell...go back to Xavier if you're an old-timer. Look at the recent MAC Tourney losses to Western Michigan, Toledo, Miami and K.e.n.t.. Look at the pattern of those losses, in addition to the Winthrop loss...or even Austin Peay. The Zips always seem to find a way to pull off the "come-from-ahead loss" in these crucial games. Many held at home, or 40 minutes from campus. Like Lakers HC Pat Riley trademarked "Three-peat," Dambrot should trademark "Crapped Down Our Leg." Every time we play these games, it's "Groundhog Day."If you have no worries, you really aren't a huge Zips hoops fan. Your heart isn't in it. Your bar is low.Leaving the JAR after yet another leg-crapping flat-out sucked.
Wait a minute...I should be doing the trademarking and give Dambrot a piece of the profits for providing the team that does the crapping. And speaking of lowering the bar, I am there. That way I did not walk out dissapointed. It was just another example of not having a go to guy that will get you a key bucket to stop the bleeding and then get you a second bucket to take back the lead. (thanks GP1)Again I ask, do we have a quality bench (second team) or do we have a bench full of second teamers? Conyers has been great so far, but he was 3-10, Roberts- no field goals in 27 minutes, Humpty playing 17 minutes and Nik 22 is just not enough...For the great things KD's teams have done over the years, I still do not see any real attempt to develop that go to guy. Easy KD fans, I am not blaming him, because you have to have the player to do it, but where has he been. In additon to finding a rotation in the 14 games prior to the MAC season, one would think we would try to develop some plays with specific players that will accomplish this.Far too often in the 8-10 games where we are basically guaranteed a win, I see the same offense with some attempts to get the ball in the post, but mostly a ball rotation offense with guys taking open threes. Where are the plays breaking down the defense and getting open 10-12 foot shots? Post of Nik, get him the ball. IF he turns it over, so what....do it again. Run some picks for Humpty, breaking down the D so that he can develop that mid-range game...Someone...please...score....After many years of walking out of the JAR dissappointed in games like this, I went into the game not expecting much, that way I wasn't that dissappointed. How bad (or good) is it that when on the ride home Frenchy says "today's loss brings KD's home record to 72-10". My 13 year old daughter proceeds to name 9 of the 10 losses....Now I need to "work" on her expectations....
