Spin
Interesting. Student fees made up 70% of the athletic revenue.I feel more comfortable saying I am a "supporter" of the athletic programs now, as a student.

On the other hand, CUSA makes a smidling revenue to be shown on the Sonic Tatertots TV on cable channel 827. WAC schools actually held out for a long time to get ESPN to contribute a total of a few milllion $ for their rights. A few million more than the lowly MAC, that is. 72 Roo
FWIW, last year every school in C-USA got a $1.4 million share in the distribution of the conference TV money. Schools that went to bowl games got even more. The MAC distributed $0. We have got to get out as soon as we can. No wonder Marshall bolted as soon as they could. The economic fact of life is the MAC will never support the athletic program we envision. It can't. Never has and never will. The conference just does not generate the dollars needed to keep us where we want to go. It's good for us now only because there is nothing better. Once we make ourselves attractive enough to other better conferences we must leave.

This is why we have to hope that we grow, in spite of the limitations. I think the MAC is always going to be the MAC, yet we are making investments to be something else. I sure hope it pays off. Granted, not all students participate, but all can enjoy and benefit from, to varying degrees. And it's certainly part of the college experience. RACER
i don't understand why the mac does not start it's own network.i realize this would cost money from each school to start it up.it would be a good way for students interested in broadcasting to get some experince.the cable company would not pay for it,but im sure we could get the gameson tv then.then at least we could put all the mac games on tv when we wanted to.it would be a great advertising, and exposure for all the mac schools.we are getting nothing out of espn now;so why not at least try it.right now we don't even live feeds on the zip zone.we pay for this crap when it's also on the radio for free.the horizon leauge put all the b-ball games on for free.the mac needs to do something because right now most of the money is coming from the general fund to support sports.bcs schools like osu all the money comes from dontations,tv rev, merchandise ect. Marshall, Akron, Toledo, Miami, Temple, Buffalo, Southern Miss, East Carolina, UAB and Memphis would be a nice 10 (thinking football and basketball and regionally). Troy for their recent football success and Western Kentucky for their surprisingly storied basketball history would be a nice couple additions for a 12 team conference. Obviously, these 12 teams ARE NOT going to gather together. But the point is I'm not sure how much Marshall really cares/relates to Houston, SMU, Tulsa, etc...except for the fact that being there is good for lining the pockets. And Marshall. People who don't know football think Marshall made a bad move leaving the MAC. While CUSA isn't at the Big East level, it is light years ahead of the MAC. Marshall made the right call. Marshall made the right call.I totally think they made the right call. And I agree those teams would be great coming to the INFO. Lots of history with SMU and Houston. But their level of success seems to have diminished somewhat. While fans might have more interest in some of those names, not sure if the kids they recruit care that much about going to some of those Texas venues and/or care about those teams/schools. Now, that is not to say they care that much about Akron, Toledo, etc. I just believe, if all things were equal from a TV and revenue standpoint, Marshall (the university) would prefer to be more involved with the East and "near south" than with Texas, Oklahoma, etc. And, I also think that their level of success, especially in football, would be even greater in a redeveloped conference. Perhaps that belief is based on how successful they were in the late 90's and early 00's...might have little to do with where they were and more to do with just luck of timing with Moss, Pennington, Leftwich, etc.

Sorry for the confusion. And yes, I know..Marshall made and won a bowl game this year. We'll see if it is sustained.

Marshall made the right call.Marshall has been floundering badly since leaving the MAC. They went 6-6 last season with their only significant wins against Memphis and SMU. They beat a horrible MAC school in the MCB and had seven wins. They lost to ECU. They would have beaten ECU when they were good in the MAC. They lost to a lot of teams they would have beaten when in the MAC.They have grown so much since joining CUSA, they fired their coach. What Marshall had going for it in the MAC was the illusion of greatness, and some really good players who were used to winning. It kept good players coming to Marshall. They don't have that now. They are a mid level team in a low level conference and could easily finish below .500 next year. Huntington is the armpit of the United States and the idea of going there to go 6-6 doesn't sound as good to a player as going there to go 9-3 and win the conference. Can we really say these "accomplishments" are a sign that Marshall is better off? Marshall used to say something like, "We play for championships." What is the motto now, "We play for .500 seasons."
BirdZip
I'll take a .500 season for starters...

I was just always curious whether I could call myself a "supporter" of the athletics programs compared to other supporters. Being a student.
