Zip Watcher
On the NIT: ...but this isn't like playing Michigan State and Kansas here. It isn't even like playing Ohio StateWe played Ohio State in the NIT in 1988.It was a very tight game. OSU had Treg Lee, Chris Jent and I believe Jay Burson? The Zips Eric McLaughlin blew out his knee late after being thrown under the scorers table by an opposing player, and we couldn't recover.Instead of OSU, we would stand a very good chance of playing Dayton or Cincinnati should we end up in the the 2010 NIT.If your point is only that you'd rather be in the NCAA tourney than the NIT...or that participating in the NCAA tourney is more exciting than the NIT...why bother posting it? Who wouldn't rather be in the NCAA over the NIT? No one.Fixed.

Who wouldn't rather be in the NCAA over the NIT? No one. That's the way I read half these posts. If you told me today that we will end up in the NIT, no I wouldn't be excited, because our goal right now is the big dance and any time you miss your goal your not excited. If we get in the NIT, the day they announce the pairings, I'll be excited. The day of our (proposed) NIT game, I'll be excited. When we (hopefully) win an NIT game I'll be excited. If we get to the final four in the NIT, I'll probably say to myself, hmmm maybe it was better to make the NIT then go to the big dance and get beat in the first round. But I WANT TO WIN A GAME IN THE DANCE. Everybody loves those first round games and those are the most exciting games. Winning one of those games will go a long way for our program. infofan
Can we get a poll going here as to how many people are honestly just as excited about the prospects of an NIT bid as they are an NCAA bid?NIT reality check, nobody cares about the NIT. It is a secondary tournament. A consilation prize (and not much of one) for those teams that get left out of the NCAA's. It draws little to no national media attention and is really only good for giving young teams another week or two of practice and playing time together before a long offseason. This team shouldn't be focused at all on the NIT's. NCAA's or bust.Im not twisting anyones words nor is this an afront to anyone . Quickzips your a great fan and welcomed to your opinion, my point was some people DO care about the NIT, it DOES receive media attenntion, and its ncaor (not bust) NI, or cbi. They wont sedulus so NIT i est chancewehave topotentially play and beat Dayton, Xavier, Cincinnati, or NC Charlotte. By the way- as of this morning NIT-ology.com has moved us up to IN the NIT after being the 8th team on bubble last weekend

Zip Watcher
Funny season, looking back at the scheduleWe were not in a conference that season, but you'll find at least 6 home & homes on the schedule. Some from old OVC opponents, others w/ Boise, Brooklyn.Crazy stuff.

Buford, one of my all time favorite Zips. Dude could dunk. I remember the team marketing poster that year. I think it said SHOWTIME at the top and had our starting 5 in tuxes, left hand extending a basketball and right hand behind them high in the air. At least that's the way I remember it. I'm pretty sure everyone feels like this, no?You guys nailed it.There's some classic internet forum debating going on in this thread. Everyone agrees that the NCAA tournament is more important than the NIT. The only disagreement is how much less important the NIT is than the NCAA. In classic internet forum debate style, one side posts that the other side must think the NIT has no value, and the other side fires back that they must think the tournaments are of equal value.No. Everyone is in agreement that the NCAA is more important. The only question is by how much. Whatever your opinion may be, it's not wrong for you. Where it starts going wrong is when mischaracterizations of other people's opinions are employed to "prove" that one side is absolutely right and the other side is absolutely wrong. If the two sides fighting it out here focused more on where they were in agreement than where they differ, there'd no longer be a battle over this because there's not enough true substance to fuel a battle. GJGood
Just wanted to point out that in addition to the NCAA, NIT, and CBI there is also the CIT. This tournament was specifically created with "mid-majors" in mind, so even if catastrrphe strikes and say we lose two straight from this point, we would almost assuredly have a place to continue playing. The only problem with the CIT vs. the CBI is the fact that they don't use a bracket, so its like the old NIT and we'd not be too likely to ever have much of a chance at a home game whereas the NIT and CBI have seeding and better seeds play at home.Hopefully none of that matters in the slightest for this year, but I thought it should be mentioned.
ZachTheZip
The CIT was discontinued, the last I heard.I preferred it over the CBT because it only took teams from conferences that had less than 50% of the teams in the NCAA tournament. It was basically a tournament of solid mid-majors.
Quickzips
I guess I'm just going to have to agree to disagree as far as this one goes. I am clearly in the minority, and pretty much the only one there right now. I'm just not nearly as excited about the NIT as seemingly everyone else is. Maybe my expectations are too high after last year. Maybe getting a taste of the NCAA's has spoiled me a bit. I don't know.

My interpretation of what others are saying (which could be wrong) is that no one is "excited" about the NIT, but everyone is glad that the NIT is there as a consolation prize in case the Zips fail to make the NCAA tournament. I wouldn't describe that as being "excited" about the NIT, but that's just my interpretation. A consolation prize is better than nothing, but nothing to get overly excited about.Consolation: a source of comfort in a time of suffering, grief, disappointment, etc.

Is your ego that wrapped up in being right that even after I've conceeded to simply agree to disagree you have to keep this going? Do you really need to have the last word that bad. Alright then, you are correct. The NIT is a big deal. It is definitly something to get excited about. I can't wait until the NIT selection show. I hope we get a first round home game. Hopefully against the last team that got left out of the NCAA's. I really think Akron can make a deep run in the NIT this year. I'm talking Final 4 in New York type deep. I can't wait. I'm stoked. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Really now, instead of the College Insider's Tournament, I'm really hoping that the Zips can earn an invitation to the College Layman's Insider Tournament. I'm convinced that they would provide a pounding presence, especially inside the lane, in that tourney.Go Zippers go.

Dave in Green
I sincerely apologize if I wasn't clear enough in expressing my position to the point that it could be misinterpreted as an attack. I was not trying to make anyone change their position or admit to something they don't believe, and there was certainly no malice intended. I simply tried to say that I thought there was more agreement than disagreement in everyone's positions. I'm pleased that some people understood what I meant and sorry that others didn't.Peace. Dave in Green
..... By the way- as of this morning NIT-ology.com has moved us up to IN the NIT after being the 8th team on bubble last weekendHere's the story on that. Some of the oddsmakers (Pomeroy, etc.) show the Zips beating the higher-ranked Can't Friday, thanks to the home court advantage. That would make the Zips the automatic NIT qualifier from the MAC. The reason they didn't previously show a MAC team getting a bid is because they were projecting Can't to win both Friday and in the MAC tournament, and go to the NCAA instead of the NIT.Note that Buffalo is still among the 32 NIT also-rans while Can't is still projected to win the MAC tournament and get the automatic NCAA bid under "Remaining NCAA bids go to the other conference champions (19)" on the NIT-ology.com site. The only scenario I see for two MAC teams to make the NIT is if the Zips win Friday and Can't loses in the MAC tournament to a team other than the Zips. Can't is probably the only MAC team with a high enough rating to earn an at-large bid to the NIT, which could put them in the NIT along with the Zips under this scenario. So the last thing we want to see is two MAC teams in the NIT, because it would be a sure sign that the Zips did not win the MAC tournament and the NCAA tournament bid!
