InTheZone
Alright, I've seen enough of Patrick Nicely. The kid doesn't have it and never will. Matt Rogers is no superman, but at least he's mobile and he didn't look half bad yesterday. At this point I think he gives us the best chance to get some things done on offense. Being that next week is basically a wash, I think Ianello needs to give both these kids a half of football and then pick the best performer to QB this team heading into MAC play. Put the heat on both of them and see who comes out of the fire. For those at the game yesterday, (besides Captain Kangeroo, who's still planning his 2013 Patick Nicely draft party), did Nicely look as awful in person as he looked on tv? However, he's still a better quarterback than Rogers is...Do you recall how awful he was at CMU last year? Seriously? Do you mean the CMU game last year, where Matt completed 63% of his passes, ran for 2 TDs, and we scored 21 points? And it was only his 2nd start at QB? After 12 or so games of Nicely, what do we really have to hang our hats on at this point? Can we do any worse? I don't like any of our options right now, but with Matt's playmaking ability, the fact that he at least throws passes that can be caught, and knowing that he's only had a few starts, I can't see why we wouldn't seriously consider a giving him a chance to do something with this offense. RootforRoo44
I'd feel more comfortable having Igor behind center than Matt ....he's not a D1 QB. (then again we aren't a D1 football team)
InTheZone
I'm with skip-zip, at least Rodgers can make plays with his feet. Regardless of who stinks it up at QB for the rest of this year, Ianello needs to start looking at JUCO QB's and making contacts right now. Normally I would be completely against going JUCO anything, but we literally have nothing on the roster at QB.
InTheZone
Here's a 3-star JUCO, #2 JUCO QB in the country according to rivals, with no offers yet. GO OFFER HIM!!!! He's an Ohio boy who played HS at Dublin Coffman. http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting...d945xj2S5hGPZB4
ZippyTuba11
The last thing we need is indecision at QB. I'd be all in favor of using Rogers more during the game, to make a couple plays here and there, so long as Nicely is the main QB (or vice versa). zippy5
At least give Nicely a start or 2 against a MAC team. Rodgers would have done equally as bad against an SEC team..
Buckzip
Nicely is a true sophomore. Give him some time. With that being said, I don't see any bad happening from giving Rogers some more time. At least he can make something happen with his legs. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
I hate to say I was very happy last year when Nicely got his chance to play, even at the expense of a Rogers injury. However, I have also been unimpressed in Nicely's inability to throw with accuracy so far. I also think he holds onto the ball too long. Maybe he'll develop into a quality D-1 quarterback but his progress has been nil so far. I wouldn't mind seeing some Rogers in upcoming games, even knowing that as a starter last year he was also not good. One thing about the two that I wonder about: I've noticed that Nicely appears pretty aloof on the sideline. He checks in with one of the coaches after series and then usually stays to himself until it's time for the offensive unit to take the field. Rogers seems to interact a lot more with other offensive players between series and seems more involved to me somehow. I almost wonder if Nicely has allowed the pressure of being the starter to either go to his head or just isn't dealing well with the situation somehow. I like the interaction I see from Rogers on the sideline. Could be pointless observations, but that's the beauty of being in the new stadium with less than 10,000 fans! It's not hard to key in on the little stuff. STZ
GP1
Ianello needs to start looking at JUCO QB's and making contacts right now. I give Nicely the rest of the year. A player's soph year is the year he shows whether or not he can play. Unfortunately, I don't see much change between this year and last year. He is playing the most important position on the field and he needed to come in this year better than last year. He is a loooong way away from where he should be. Get a JC player and open up the competition if his play doesn't improve between now and the end of the year. His current performance can not be tolerated for two more years if this is the best he can do. I look for him to improve against lesser defenses in the MAC. Throw the GW game out the window. UofA would be a good opportunity for a JC player looking to play in a pro style offense. I don't like the pro style offense for UofA, but if they are going to run it, get guys who can. Dr Z
If the receiving corp continues to drop pass after pass, does it matter who is throwing the ball? I'm glad they brought Matt in at the end of the game. I wanted to see if that changed anything. His first two passes were dropped. Did anybody count the total drops in the game? We are a long way away from making one change at a position and thinking it will improve things. I'm thinking/hoping getting more snaps for PN7 with the new scheme will pay off down the road. I hope there is some sort of "emergency" meeting with the receivers this week. Step it up Frisman!
GP1
If the receiving corp continues to drop pass after pass, does it matter who is throwing the ball? Did anybody count the total drops in the game? Two poorly thrown balls on deep passes early in the game didn't help either. We can't blame the WRs for those. That doesn't excuse the drops though. The first drop by 82 could have given the Zips the lead early. I'm not saying we would have won, but some momentum doesn't hurt. I agree. Stick with PN. He needs to play better though. They all need to play better. They all can play better. This is very frustrating.
mes102
1) No one in college football goes 15/15 all the time.... 2) Of course it's Nicely's fault that the wide recievers can't catch with their hands 3) Do you really think "Rodgers"(not even Rogers like all of you have been saying...spell it right if you're going to argue) 4) It's Nicely's fault that he was playing against the starters and Rodgers was playing against the 4th strings of Kentucky... 5) AND IT'S DEFINITELY Nicely's fault that he played in a Spread system for 5 years(4 in HS and 1 in college(he could of been playing spread in middle school too) LET'S JUST ALL HAIL DOWN TO RODGERS AND MAKE HIM THE STAR OF AKRON!!!!!!!!! IF WE START HIM, WE'RE GOING TO GO 8-1 IN THE NEXT 9 GAMES AND WIN THE MAC!!!!!!! HE'S JUST THAT MUCH BETTER THAN NICELY!!!!!! LET'S PUT HIS IMAGE ON THE SIDE OF INFOCISION FOR ALL THE CITY TO SEE!!!!!!! THE NEW KING OF AKRON, RIGHT?!?!?! So let's all ride that Matt Rodgers bandwagon and derail Nicely's bandwagon... I'm not...Everyone's harping on Ianello and now on Nicely because that's the QB that Ianello has decided to start, right? so it must be a wrong decision since Ianello has no idea what he's doing, right? COME ON PEOPLE!!!!!! IT'S NOT LIKE WE WERE DOING ANYTHING THIS YEAR ANYWAYS!!!!!!! Everyone wanted to get rid of Brookhart ASAP and now everyone wants Ianello gone already So who's all going to Biden's rally this afternoon at Student Union since everyone isn't speaking rationally on here and probably democratic...but that's for somewhere else...JUST STOP PANICKING EVERYONE!!!!!!!! skip-zip
I respect everyone's opinions. And I can clearly see that many of those who were debating the QB situation a few weeks ago have at least started to come to grips with the common reality of the situation. And that is..... How long do we wait?? and Can we put our individual personnel evaluations aside for a moment and look closely at how this situation effects the Zips? Rodgers is down to the last 20 games of his career, while PN has almost 3 years left. And we don't know all that much about Matt, really. As a starter, he played 2-1/2 games for us? I think? With PNs ineptness so far, what's the loss to the Zips if we see if Rodgers can possibly show some progress, and be the Senior starter next year that we've wanted ever since Getsy left? And if things don't look promising for Matt by November? PN still has 2 full years of eligibility remaining, and can work on his game and come back next fall with a chance to battle to be a Junior and Senior year starter himself. Based on the situation, it just makes sense for the Zips.

I know we can't really compare Nicely and Rodger's performances from last week, but Rodgers seemed to have much better accuracy and had more touch, in my opinion. It would also be very helpful to have a more mobile QB back there to provide another threat. It's a tough call on what to do because making Rodgers the starter could really hurt Nicely's confidence, which could hurt Akron in the long run, but Rodgers may very well be the better option. I think Ianello should give Rodgers some time early in the game this weekend and see how he does.
