72 Roo
I agree with most of the posters here when we say that this team is horrible. With that being said I am still a supporter of iCoach ( I can't believe I said that, but I did). Here's the deal. I believe he, or any other coach hired to turn around a program, deserves enough time to show he can get it headed in the right direction. To me that's two years. If the evidence isn't there after two years Dr. P should fire his ass. He can go to the university foundation and get the money to eat the rest of the contract and cut our loses. This hire is shaping up to be worse than the hiring of coach Faust, who I think was, and is, a great man. Just a poor D1 football coach. With K.E.N.T. on the horizon, I can't remember a time when I was more depressed about our football team. K.E.N.T. will kick our ass with slightly better talent, far more heart, and better coaching. And that is taking into account K.E.N.T. is led by Doug Martin. Talk about setting the bar low.

With the heart we've got on this team, they'd probably be content to just walk across the sidelines and give it back, so long as they could still collect their scholarship checks. akronad
Please read this: http://www.ohio.com/sports/104470834.html I believe that this team still has heart. Will they win the MAC East this year? Definitely not, but I still think we will surprise a few people. And I am going out on a limb with my prediction for this week. And that is taking into account K.E.N.T. is led by Doug Martin. Talk about setting the bar low. First. Regardless of how you might feel about his coaching ability, Gerry had to mold a D-1A program from a small roster full of 1-AA players, without being able to match the total scholarship players of our 1-A competitors for several years, and with absolutely no facilities. Yet, we posted a winning record in only our 3rd year of 1-A football, and were very competitive initially in the MAC, and nearly won it (I think that was our 5th 1-A season). In fact, Gerry's 7-3-1 record that year still has not been matched in the 18 years since. With all things considered, how can we be all that disappointed that we became the first school to successfully transition to 1-A, and actually had some successful stretches during those years? I only have a problem with where we've gone since that point. What have we done to grow even more? The answer is, we haven't. Our next coach failed to even match Gerry's minor level of success despite improvements in our situation. Sometimes you get a feeling early on about how things are going with a coach. I had a bad feeling about LO after his first year when he took a roster of 16 (I think) returning starters and won only 2 games. And we would have several more losing seasons in a row before we saw some level of success. With JD, I think most of us had a good feeling, especially when we had a very competitive opening campaign, and lost Frye, but had a better season the following year. With CoachI, I am getting the same feeling I had with LO. I agree with you that coaching evaluations often come down to "good direction" or "bad direction". When Gerry looked to be headed in a bad direction late in his tenure here, he had to go. So, where are we headed now? When the direction is spiraling downward, even in the first 1/2 season, you have to start questioning things. I don't know when the right time is to pull the plug, but I certainly don't ever again want to see mediocrity rewarded with contract extensions that we can't get out of. Even with the budget issues involved, I'm simply getting too old to watch a bad situation fester for several years with no foreseeable light at the end of the tunnel. GoZips88
Having a hard time predicting a score for this one. You can't take 'SUCKS' out of "Can't" as it is in there by definition. It is what it is. On the other hand, we THOROUGHLY SUCK and that appears to be supported by statistics no matter how you slice and dice them. This game could easily be the ESPN Bottom 10 Pillow Fight of the Week ... I know we've found a way to keep the wagon wheel in recent years for the most part but Can't always SEEMS to do a better job of being 'up' for this game. We continue to get rolled and in doing so, roll the wheel across the field to them ... Akron 16 Can't 38 Glad I won't be there this year. Like others, just can't stomach a beat-down at the hands of Can't, ESPECIALLY over there. Will watch as much as I can on STO.

Aaron
Not only are we NOT the pillow-fight of the week (that belongs to two winless schools in New Mexico playing each other), ESPN has hope for Akron. Our writeup: "Remedy": The Zips might find a remedy for their woeful 0-5 start; they play at 1-3 Can't State on Saturday. Don't forget how the Akron pressure has always gotten to Can't State, even in years when the flushes have had seemingly more talented teams. It's not a fluke we've won 11 of the last 13. It's the best week for the MAC staying out of the bottom 10 for a while. EMU is (still) #1, Akron is #6, and Bowling Green is on the waiting list. If nothing else, this is the one thing we have going for us this week!!!! And the Captain makes mention of this as well. Despite the fact that they gave us a serious beatdown at their place in 2006, Ken+ has rarely beaten us in the more recent years of this rivalry, and they have to carry that losing mentality into every game against us. You always have to give us a chance to win this game knowing that we have a mental edge because we've OWNED these guys.

I should be grateful that we obviously have taken care of our rival the last ten years. For whatever reason it doesn't feel that way at times. The funk that is Akron football has definitely taken its toll on many of us. A lot of average at best football and only the single bowl appearance over those same ten years. infofan
heard bits and piecesof Can't coaches show tonight. Interesting to hear Can't linebacker coach Jim Fleming bash the Zips. I realize some bitterness is unavoidable but geez your son is still on the UA team and he had no respectful thing to say about Akron . Curious thing he said was he expected Akron defense to be strong with all the returnees ( I did too!). While he didnt give a score prediction the rest of panel expects a 41-14 drubbing at least. They cant see Akron scoring any more than 14. Tye Linder said if we do score more than 14 hes staying home from work on monday. Does anyone know status of Will Fleming?? My take on this game..... the pressure is squarely on Can't. everyone thinks the Zips suck so what better time to pull together and show some heart by keeping the game close. weve all wittnessed games when we were heavily favored and we layed an egg. maybe its the Golden Felons chance this year! goodthts
First off, I hope we CANNOT State real good. I did see this mentioned in this thread that has me scratching my head: "This year's team is experienced and talented." Whaaaa?!?! How so? Just because we HAVE Seniors on the roster doesnt mean they are/were starter quality. We have one mediocre WR. We have 2 slow-moving but good tackling LB's of any quality. I don't think our secondary actually exists. And special teams is definitely not anywhere near talented on a Div-1 level. So please tell me where the Zips have all this talent? He was probably drunk. The guy's an alcoholic and a completely classless moron. He has quite a reputation around the coaching profession, and bashing his former team is right in line with that. He sucked as a coordinator here and I'm sure he sucks as a linebackers coach there. How does it feel, Mr. Fleming, to be over 50 years old and stuck as a position coach at Can't State, having made no progress whatsoever as a coach in the last 25 years of your career? All success we had as a defense in 2004 and 2005 was a result of Associate Head Coach and LB's coach Matt Wallerstedt. Fleming was the coordinator, but all the guys I talked to said Wallerstedt was the one designing the game plans and running defensive meetings. I think we all saw the result when Wallerstedt left after the '05 season. The defense went from a top 25 ranking to god awful in a very short period of time. When left to his own devices, Fleming showed what an incompetent bozo and failure as a coach he really was. He deserves to be an assistant coach at Can't State and Can't State deserves him. johnnyzip84
Although it's probably not a big deal at this point, Jarvis is unlikely to be back this Saturday. I think the biggest factor here is that they've been forced to remove Terry from an already-thin receiving corp and move him back to RB. We can't lie to ourselves. Without a healthy Jarvis in the game, we have a better chance of winning. So we might have been a 24 point underdog with Jarvis in the lineup? Speaking of the line, it's shifted slightly to 17.5 pts. Fred must be putting down a bundle on this one.

RACER
if our players have any pride at all they will go out and give Can't a game.if a coach has to motivate these guys for Can't then they should be playing d-1 football.we have a few games Can't ,ou,wmu, to show that the players belong in d-1.it's up to the players now to take matters in thier own hands.if we get lose the next three we may not win a game this year.i do agree that next year could even be worse than this year.no one expects us to winat Can't; so i hope the coaching staff will be agressive on offense.
