Valpo Zip
From coach Porter's twitter account: "After 40 games w/o a true loss(pk's vs UVA) the unthinkable happened. CSU-2 Akron-1. Sorry to our alumni, fans and Ak rowdies supporters." I cannot believe that Coach Porter is appologizing for losing a game. This guy sets the bar waaaay to high and day after day he is showing what a real asset he is to our program. My question is for other coaches with twitter account (wink Wink), if Coach Porter appologizes for losing 1/40 games what are you guys supposed to do for losing 8/8 games ? give back your salary? how about you forfeit the remaining 4 years of your contract? Not a bad idea. You know, we always need to keep something in perspective whenever one of us decides to compare our programs/coaches. We have the best soccer talent in the country. We don't have the a prayer of ever having the best basketball or football talent, and never will.
Big Zip
Nobody is asking for the best in football and basketball....in fact I'm pretty sure everyone has been pretty happy with basketball, but we are definitely expecting more from football. We are expecting a team that will be bowl eligible annually, beat Can't and compete for the MAC title year in and year out. It may sound loft given our current state, but I dont' think it is too high of a goal at all!
Dr Z
"After 40 games w/o a true loss (pk's vs UVA)..."I'm glad to hear coach P doesn't think losing a game on pk's is a true loss. I agree!!! That makes me feel a little better for the time I wasted watching that game. As far as apologizing for losing to Cleveland State, I didn't even know they had a soccer team?!? I can't imagine how many egos were put in check after that game. Could be a good thing in the long run. Cleveland State? I hope there is some kind of video that came from this game that KD can use to motivate his team before he plays CSU this year.

I'd take a loss by less than double digits at this point...an offensive TD...an offensive drive longer than 30 yards...that's my football "bar" right now. Porter's team laid a colossal egg on Saturday. In American Football, it's pretty much the equivalent to Ohio State losing to a 5-5 MAC school. I wouldn't get to bent out of shape with his "Sorry about that" tweet. He was embarrassed, and felt bad that his Zips let the fans down. akronad
Over the years, and I'm going all the way back to the 60's, the soccer matches between CSU and Akron have been fierce competitions. Cleveland State actullay had some very good teams back in the late 80's and early 90's. They are not a fly by night organization. We had a bad game. We lost. As a former coach, I can tell you that this loss will be the best thing for Akron. I would not want to be Michigan St. tomorrow afternoon. Seems like they have many more area kids than we do.

At something like 140 in the RPI, with a .500 record, I have to look at how good they are THIS YEAR. I agree with the Captain. This is a colossal upset. Imagine Akron knocking off the #1 D1-A football team in the country right now, and you probably have your comparison in terms of ranking difference. I respectfully disagree with both you and CK. There's not as much margin for error in soccer as there is in American football. It was definitely a big upset, but I wouldn't compare it to Akron defeating the #1 FBS team in the country, no matter the RPI difference. I think we should concentrate more on Coach Porter's other tweet..."Keep the Faith". I've become spoiled in the last 2 seasons given all of the Men's Soccer Team's success. But, they are human and can and do make mistakes. Hopefully, this is just a minor setback from which they'll recover and go on to pick up 1 of the top 4 seeds (and home field) in the NCAA Tournament. GO ZIPS!

I now know this team is capable of that. What I hope is, that it is a reminder that they need to stay focused no matter how weak the opponent seems. RootforRoo44
CSU has never truly had a national top level program at any time. They may have been decent in the 60's 70's 80's (30 straight years huh?) but they've never been anywhere close to Akron, probably not even in our worst years. Fact is we're something like 35-11 all time against them with almost all of the losses occurring at their place. Hardly fierce competition. Good news is, when we play them next time we will murder them 7-0.

It's human to lose focus during a long stretch after you've defeated top competition; this needs to be a reminder that they need to stay focused no matter how weak the opponent seems . EDIT: Actually, what you should take away from this is that I will be following them on game cast, at their remaining home games, and I plan to be in Santa Barbara. I would accept that mantra if our next meeting was for the College Cup Finals Truth is, this team worries me, they have started taking games off and not playing to their ability. That is what Porter was apologizing for!

johnnyzip84
The two big concerns for me are: 1) Kofi's health 2) 2nd half schedule reliance on Mattocks for the bulk of the scoring. How will a Jamaican like playing in the colder temps? I guess we'll see. Maybe he and Tulloch can draw inspiration from THESE guys
Zip_ME87
Truth is, this team worries me, they have started taking games off and not playing to their ability. That is what Porter was apologizing for! I totally agree, but I think that all of us know that on any given day, any given team can upset another; so, I just don't like focusing so much on this loss. It's over and can't be changed. What's important is how our team responds. I believe in them; I'll be there and support them; and, I know they can reach their goal. But, they have to make it happen. GO ZIPS! Remember, I was referencing only the difference in ranking. But, you just reminded me again why I like watching the Zips play soccer, but dislike the game in general. In a world of 1-0 games and limited scoring opportunities, major upsets probably are much more likely to happen in Soccer than in Football. It does lead me to believe that even if we have the most awesome team ever in college soccer, we may lose on our way to a national championship simply by one lucky bounce in a split second during 90 minutes of great play. That would be a total bummer. But I know it happens.

I understood yours and CK's comparisons given the difference in rankings, but soccer is a "cruel" game because of limited scoring opportunities and 1 point per goal (as opposed to 3-pts for FG's, 6 pts for TD's, etc.).
