ZachTheZip Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 Not sure. It's very possible we hire one of our position coaches and then bring in a local HS coach to coach the vacated position. Quote

skip-zip Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 I don't think anything will make me happier in this off-season than to hear that we have some good new talent coming in here. We lost a good amount of good players, from a bad team. And I'm not too confident about too much of what is left. So, I don't care so much about who's calling the plays right now if we don't have the talent to execute them. Quote

When we look at the team play the last two games of the season we find a different scenario. The Zips nearly pulled off the upset of the season (for MAC play) by barely losing to a good Miami team that went on to win the MAC championship game over a favored NIU. The win over Buffalo was expected. Still, the team showed marked progress toward the end of the season. Are the Zips really all that bad? In retrospect? I see potential and growth on the part of the players and the coaching staff. The learning curve is steep. Yet, manageable. Go American football Zips. Quote

We won 2 games in November in 2009, yet returned to being horrible in 2010. I actually predicted back in November of this year that if we beat Buffalo, hopes would be raised once again. I see this optimism in your post as well. So, lets just hope it means something, unlike our end of season victory against Eastern Michigan the year before. Here's the old "Team A almost beat Team B, and Team B beat Team C, so Team A could beat team C". However, you forget that Team C is NIU, who destroyed us. It's impossible to compare teams with these single-game scenarios. Quote

I don't see ANY area on the gridiron Zips where the team progressed and the coaches got better, with the POSSIBLE exception of running back. Coincidentally I don't see any coach or group of coaches who showed growth in their profession. This staff came in highly heralded, primarily by the iCoach, but with the benefit of hindsight we can see that they have questionable ability. The fact that most of them were fired or out of a job when they joined us at Akron should have been an indication of what was to come. Not one of them took mariginal talent and had it over-achieving at the end of the season. Isn't that what a coach is supposed to do? That's what my management team is expected to do in business i.e. take the talent you are given and help it to achive the goals for our business this year. 1-11 is not achieving anything. BTW, glad to see Latina go after witnessing his performance as an OC. On the plus side I do feel iCoach is bringing in better talent. I remain a skeptic regarding he and his staff having the ability to get the most out of them and create a true team of brothers willing to do anything for each other. He is our coach for the next two years so I wish him success. I just want to be realistic as his ability to deliver it. As you have said, I hope he is learning and ready to use it to create W's. Happy New Year! Quote

Tecmo Super Bowl will save us! 2011 will mark the 20th anniversary of Tecmo Super Bowl It's nice to see that the youth still play Tecmo Super Bowl. We actually had a tournament with my nephews and brothers on Christmas this year. One of my nephews won, and now every time I go over there he wants to play it. Quote

That is a list of offers. Very few commits from actual talented players. Maybe you're time spent in the middle of SEC country is skewing you're expectations If you're looking for mostly 3-star, multiple 4-star, and occasional 5-star players, you need only stroll over to one of your "other" forums. I put some, but not a whole lot, of credence in the "star" rating systems. But that's just me. At this point, this looks to be a solid, but perhaps unspectacular Zip recruiting class. It addresses the immediate needs (O-line, secondary, plan "B" at QB), although landing a consistent PK would be nice before February comes around. Quote

I am in the middle of SEC country, but that has nothing to do with this. JD had some great classes on paper too. None of these guys looks too impressive to me. Quote
cornbread Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Recruiting season is only fun in the NCAA video game. We will have no idea on some of these guys until the spring game, and the fall for the rest. iCoach gets until the end of this season before I start calling shenanigans. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 JD had some great classes on paper too. That's just it. This doesn't look like a "great" class on paper. It simply looks like a decent class, that addresses obvious needs. But will the guys eventually play? That's the big question. I'm really curious to know whether Richard Hall and Antoine Russell return next year. If they do, then I can only think of one iCoach recruit (Bowers, hated to see him go) who has bailed on the team. None of these guys looks too impressive to me. Google Nick Rossi and you'll find plenty of people who think the Zips got a steal. Although not shown as "signed" on the Scout list, JUCO QB Clayton Moore had many BCS offers while in HS. Don't forget the transfer DT Oren Wilson from Michigan State, not included on this list. The O-linemen all look to have decent size. Only time will tell if Browning can make something out of them. Quote
skip-zip Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Well, one thing is for sure. Based on how everyone feels about him, and everything that transpired this season, his bar has been set pretty low. So, does that mean seeing a mediocre recruiting class would be an accomplishment? Personally, with the lack of talent, and my lack of confidence in the coaching, I think the the only thing that would change my thoughts is a GREAT recruiting class. If not, I'm afraid it is going to take many years for us to dig out of this hole. Akron should be a good fit for a lot of kids right now who want to be able to play early in their careers. Quote
Lee Adams Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 I would like to know how posters on this site 'know' or think they know the quality of a recruiting class at Akron. If one dismisses the ratings services as some here do, unless you have seen all of these recruits perform over time what is the basis for judgement? There have been several classes of recruits over the past 6 years that people thought were good for this level of play. A few of the players have performed well. But that certainly hasn't translated into positive results for the team on the field. Quote
