Larry Nance Jr

Got to see Larry Nance Jr. in person last night when Revere HS played at Green HS. http://www.ohio.com/sports/114403424.html I would compare him to Zeke at this point of his career. He has a ton of physical ability, he threw down a fast break dunk that would rival anything I've ever seen in the NBA. But he is still very raw and seems to be content to just watch the action from a distance at some points during the game. He did impress me with his passing ability from the post. He fed team mates for several 3's and open layups when the Bulldogs doubled him down low. I know that he is being courted by several MAC teams and some interest from some larger schools also. Who ever signs him will need to be patient, but I think he can be a really good player. Is there any way he could end up as a Zip?

The Akron coaches know about him. He goes, or used to go, to the Akron summer basketball camps for kids. I was on his 3 on 3 team. He and I did pretty well if I do say so myself (I think we won the 3 on 3 tourney that year). Haha. His skills from what I remember from back then were REALLY raw. There was an article in the ABJ about him yesterday. It said he has since then worked on his game a tremendous amount. Sounds like something clicked.

Haven't seen him play, but he looks to be a pretty athletic 6-7 small forward. Noticed that in one game this season he scored 30 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, and generally seems to shoot for a pretty high percentage. The Zips could use an athletic small forward who can both shoot and rebound.

Saw him and HS teammate DJ Bettinger play a lot when they were both just starting out in 3rd and 4th grade. Back then, Larry JR actually preferred soccer so perhaps this contributed to his being a "late bloomer". OK, so maybe growing something like 7 inches after his FR year may have had something to do with it too :D

If he does wind up with the Zips, I'd like to think the Mechanical Engineering department might expand their vehicle competitions to include drag racing!

Maybe this belongs in the basketball recruiting forum.

There are 13 scholarships available. Here's what the situation looks like right now for 2011-12.

Departing and opening up scholarships (4):

Bardo

McNees

Roberts

McKnight

Possibly departing to play in Europe and opening up scholarship (1):

Cvetinovic

Probably returning scholarship players (6):

Abreu

Diggs

Egner

Euton

Marshall

McClanahan

In line to be scholarship players next season (7):

Gilliam

Green

Harney

Ibitayo

Justice

Treadwell

Walsh

Looks to me as if one of the 7 in line to be scholarship players next season would be left out if Cvetinovic decides to return for his senior season and nothing else changes.

If Cvetinovic leaves early, there'd be scholarships available for all as long as they meet all academic requirements.

Okay! I thought I knew who Nance Sr was. :D But I had to check it out to find his avocation after the NBA!. Thanks, Johnny.

BTW -- seven victories in one season by Green! Is that a new record? ;) In my day we were fortunate if we could beat Woodridge twice in a year.

Ah, an old Suburban League reference (which looks nothing like it did when I was there - think we have maybe five teams left that were in it back then). Green never did much in basketball, but always used to have Hudson's number in football. Actually had a year where Hudson and Green with both 9-0 and ranked 1-2 in the ABJ poll. Then we went to Green and got our butts handed to us.

I know more than once Green was chosen by Canton McKinley as their first-round district tournament opponent. Do they still have it that way, where the #1 seed can pick who they want to beat up on? :D

Green had a first round Bye last season. They won the disrict title.

Awesome! Go Bulldogs! I know the gym is nicer too. ;)

I would take that as Nik leaving then.

Dambrot said today on the radio that he thinks Nik is leaning toward staying.

where is that scholarship coming from then? Are one of our other players leaving? Maybe Egner?

1 - Rico

2 - McClanahan

3 - Diggs

4 - Cvetinovic

5 - Zeke

6 - Walsh

7 - Gilliam

8 - Harney

9 - Treadwell

10 - Egner

11 - Justice

12 - Ibitayo

13 - Green

You're right. If Nik plays one more year, that would put us over our 13 scholly limit.

Maybe KD's going to require one of the non-qualifiers to pay for school for one more season, much like the Darryl Roberts situation?

Hmm, GoZips is MUCH closer to the program than I and recently posted that he had heard Green was really coming along in practice. But still, I think my shot in the dark would be that Green is considering a move like Euton and transferring down a level.

I don't think Harney and Treadwell are guaranteed a scholarship. They might be, but I haven't heard anything saying they were. Maybe they will compete for a single available scholarship. Maybe one won't qualify.

That would make the most sense. But how do u determine which one has to pay? Are they allowed to split scholarships like in soccer?

http://www.umhoops.com/2011/02/10/2011-qa-larry-nance-jr/

Describe your game. I just feel like I’m a versatile 3-4 man. I’m 6-7. I feel like I can play pretty much any position on the floor, guard any position on the floor and, I mean, I score inside-out and I get a lot of rebounds.

You grew quite a bit recently, correct? Yes. From my sophomore year to my senior year I grew six inches and put on 75 pounds.

How has that affected your game? As a sophomore, I didn’t start on J.V. and over that summer I just grew, worked on my game and I’ve turned into a varsity starter. It’s changed me from just a standing-around 3-point shooter to more of a swing 3-man who can shoot 3′s also.

So would you say you have good guard skills for a big man? Yes. I mean, I’ve always been a point guard on every team I’ve played on all my life. Then all the sudden last year I had to change to a big. I feel like it helped a ton with footwork, ballhandling and shooting.

Do you feel comfortable in the post? I really do. That’s definitely, I feel, a strong point in my game. I have quite a few post moves that work.

How has the season gone for your high school team? Great. We’re 14-1 right now and ranked in the top-25 in our state.

How has the season gone for you personally? Good. I mean, I’m averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds. Really good. Recently teams have tried to double-team me and triple-team me and tried to slow us down but a lot of guys on our team have stepped up.

Which Michigan coaches have been talking with you? I’ve spoken with Coach Meyer and Coach Beilein quite often, actually.

Have they been at practices or games? Yeah, Coach Meyer was at my game this past Tuesday.

Have you been offered by Michigan? I have not, no.

What are Michigan coaches telling you regarding an offer? They just say they have one scholarship available and if I keep showing them what they like to see, I’m definitely in the running for it.

Have they given you any sort of time frame on when they would make a decision? No, they haven’t told me any specific time.

Any other offers on the table? I have some MAC offers, Horizon League and A10.

Should Michigan offer, would they be number one on your list? They’d very much be first.

Have you visited? I came up for the home Penn State game.

What’d you think? It’s awesome. It really is. It’s a great atmosphere.

Any other Michigan visits planned? Yeah, we’re hoping to catch another game real soon once the coaching staff is real, like, not busy for a weekend, then we’re going to head up there and actually visit.

What do you like about Michigan? I really like the way coach Beilein coaches, I like that it seems like every player on the team is a good person, a good player and good to be around. Coming from Ohio I know it’s uncommon, but I’ve always been really rooting for Michigan. I really think it’s a cool place to be.

How do you see yourself fitting into Michigan’s offense? I think right now they might not have that slashing, athletic presence who plays above the rim and I think I could provide that.

Anything specific you’re focused on improving about your game right now? Rebounding. Offensive rebounding and just going after every ball.

Any player (besides maybe your father, Larry Nance Sr.) who people compare you to? Actually, a lot of my friends say I play like Rudy Gay for the Memphis Grizzlies.
