GP1
Id be really concerned if Moore can't win the QB battle. From all the games I saw last year, Nicely just did not look capable of being a DI QB. Granted he didnt have a good OL, but his throws are horribly inaccurate. He does good up to the ten yard mark, but anything beyond 15 is almost a certain incomplete because he has limited touch. Good post. I think we would be much better of PN7 was beat out of his starting job. Your inaccuracy comment is the best. A QB must be able to throw the ball on target all the time...not most of the time or a part of the time. Good post on downfield throws as well. A pro style offense requires throws down field. Sometimes he was good, other times he wasn't. He isn't good at it enough to give me confidence. After two years, a player tends to be what he is. I saw enough of him last year to make me feel we could do better and need to look elsewhere.
GP1
Patrick Nicely was sacked 33 times last year. Tied for 13th most. Some of the players who were sacked more often you ask? Russell Wilson, TJ Yates, Tyrod Taylor, Dan Persa, Ryan Katz. So, the argument that PN's efficiency lacked due to his being #13 sack victim definitely does not hold water. PN had by far the lowest rating of any of the top 13 at 95.3. The most sacked, Jeff Tuel of Washington State, managed a 133.3 rating to go along with his 48 sacks. PN was ranked 113 in completion percentage, 115 in yards per attempt and 115 in qb rating. (Out of 116 that were ranked.) These are some of the numbers. Place the blame wherever you want I guess. Just do me a favor. Go back and watch the Can't game again. Best football post in a long time. Nice work!
ZipZipHooray!
I have to depend on the good folks at ZN to give me the low down on what they really see in the Lone Ranger. If I can "wake up" in time, I plan to watch both QB's very closely at the spring game (like a lot of us). That makes this year's spring game one of the more intriguing in recent years. ZipZipHooray! from your knowledge of Clayton and Mississippi/SEC football, I assume you have a close connection to him. One thing I've wondered about Clayton is whether the colder weather might have an effect on his play. Some QB's, particularly those with smaller hands (not saying this is the case with Clayton), can have issues throwing in poor weather. Do you have any insight on this? I don't have any insite on that but I would hope that all the practicing they are doing will get him adjusted to the cold~I guess we will just have to wait and see there, although I don't think it will cramp his style! Lee Adams
We need to see if a year in Ianello's system improves Nicely's decision making. Compared to his first year under JD, last year Nicely WAS terribly indecisive and inaccurate that was obvious. Does the experience make a difference? The other side of that is,Moore is coming into the system new this year. What will his learning curve be? Physically,Moore doesn't stand out. He isn't tall, doesn't appear to have a huge arm. He may be more mobile. That might cut down on the sacks a little. Accuracy and decision making, hard to tell until you get into some REAL live fire situations against some legitimate competition. Could be Nicely goes into the season as the starter if Moore isn't overwhelming in pre-season. Nicely either improves or plays his way out as the starter. Neither of these guys is gonna get much help though.
Ham
I saw PN in person at last years opener against the "Orange". I know evauluating a player from TV coverage is not the best; however I did not see much improvement at the end of the season. I didn't see any leadership from PN. Even with victory within grasp against Miami, I didn't see the fire in PN. What I thought was most telling was the interview with the three bigs last week. It seems that "The Hillbilly" has already garnered great rapore with the team. Skills aside, this team needs someone to pull them together. And I believe that has to come from the players. It will be interesting to see who shows up this spring, but more importantly, who shows up next fall!
Captain Kangaroo
PN7 had a great game against Buffalo. He threw some nice balls into the teeth of a pretty strong wind, and for perhaps the only time during the 2010 season, the balls weren't dropped. If PN7 can pull it together in his Jr. season, I'm all for it. If Moore is better, I'm all for it. Quoting the immortal Derrick Tarver - "I just wanna win." I'm still waiting to see who's going to be at WR.
ZachTheZip
Bringing in Moore can only be a good thing. Nicely needed someone to push him hard to improve. If Nicely wins out, he's our guy for the next two seasons or until he gets hurt. If Moore wins, we're also better at QB than last year. We'll be better regardless. Even if Nicely wins, we'll see Moore under Center because he has three years, and Nicely graduates in two. So when Nicely graduates, we'll have an experienced senior QB who can step in immediately.
