If you thought this year's D was bad, oh man are we in trouble next year. I honestly can't figure out why he was constantly getting hired by BCS teams. So there is a bright side to this hire. This improvement was in large part to defensive co-coordinator, Kevin Cosgrove who joined the staff last off-season and made an immediate contribution to the Gopher program. When I spoke with Coach Cosgrove a year ago, he was one of the most controversial Gopher coaching hires, but in a short time, he has earned the respect of many fans. In the 2007 season, the Gophers had the worst total defense in the nation and ranked #119, Ted Roof turned that around in 2008 to finish #73, and Cosgrove was able to improve upon that even more to a #62 ranking. He was named the top coordinator in the Big Ten by The Sporting News in 2002 and was named one of the top coordinators in the nation by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. in 1999. Most career college football assistant coaches fall into the retread category. Most are a bunch of miserable guys who aren't really smart so they do this for a living. It is unnatural to have a job where you spend your life locked in an office 24/7 watching film of football games. If guys who run Fortune 500 companies can do it while going home every night to sleep, football coaches don't need to be working 24/7. They become manic and lose touch with reality. Evaluating a coaching hire is a lot different than evaluating (or trying to evaluate) a recruiting class. Cosgrove certainly has enough of a track record to peruse. I'm curious about the portion of your response that I put in bold. Did you personally speak with him? Or is this copied from another article? A prime example of why I would not trust the chattering of a vocal fan base was the hiring three years ago of Gene Chizik to be head football coach at Auburn. The Auburn fan base went ballistic and filled every known sports gossip network with extreme venom against Chizik, who they loudly proclaimed unworthy of the position for every conceivable reason. Three years later the Auburn fan base worships the ground Chizik walks on because he just delivered a national championship. All of my life I've tried to form opinions based on my personal evaluation of data from what I consider to be the most thoughtful, intelligent sources, not the most numerous, vocal, and opinionated sources, and that's not about to change. You make an excellent point. I belong to a chat group that usually talks college football. Most of the group are SEC fans. They lambasted Chizik mercilessly. And, they still do.
