How was Barley?

For those of us who couldn't make it, I was just wondering how it went.

Did KD speak at all, adressing the entire group? What was his or the teams reaction to Notre Dame

:champs:

The place was packed to the gunwales. Noisy, frantic and KD spoke. Hard to hear what he said or

anything else in that din. Every one was happy and festive. The big concern is will there be enough

tickets for all the people who want to go. After all, Chicago is only about one-eighth the distance

Portland was. Besides, its Notre Dame, nearly as popular with the Zips faithful as tOSU. Sad.

This should be the link to the fourth picture the Beacon posted of the Barley House watch party. It is of (redshirt?) wing Chauncey Gilliam. He's so nervous before the match-up announcement he can barely look at the tv!

No reason for posting this other than the simple fact that I thought it was rather cool that a player who had to sit out on the bench for a year and who knows he has no chance of actually playing in this game, yet feels so much a part of this team that he can hardly bare to look at the tv. This team really seems to love each other. Win or lose, that's extremely cool stuff.

Edit: the link doesn't work. It just takes you to the first picture. Chauncey's picture is #4.

It was a blast. The atmosphere was crazy. The best part was when the camera guy signaled it was our turn to make noise and get picked. The place went nuts. Let's go get ourselves a win over Notre Dame!

A really neat thing about our "staged" reaction was that the camera man prepped the audience.

They knew that he would signal them when to react. Which they did on cue. Thus, there was no

five second delay between Greg Gimbel's announcement and our reaction like occurred at nearly

all the other schools on cam. Thank you, oh wise camera man.

The selection party was very well done.

Terry Pluto wrote a nice column on it in today's PD. He likened the party's vibe to a sendoff of a local high school team to the State Tournament, which I thought was a great analogy. Unlike a BCS program where star players are sequestered far away from the general public, with the Zips you feel like you're a personal part of the success. Everyone in attendance "knows" the players and staff on a level that's not possible at most other schools.

Brett McClanahan walked through the crowd and proactively shook hands with a bunch of fans. He needs to work in UA Athletics when it's all said and done. In fact, it would be great if several of these guys stayed at UA in some capacity? If affable Steve McNees asked fans donate some money to the hoops program, who could turn him down?

All the players and staff were accessible, and pretty much on Cloud 9. Smiles, photos, congratulations and handshakes never got old for any of them. My son got photos with most players, + Dambrot. I winced a little bit when he enthusiastically told Abreu - "I like you cuz you're one of the only Zips that can make a lay-up!" Alex laughed.

Zeke took pictures with scores of kids, and the smile on his face was as wide with kid #1 and it was for kid #50.

Great event. Thanks to all involved!

Those smiles on CK JR's face pretty much summed up the event for me :) Kudos to all who organized this event!!!

Anyone else surprised the players were decked out in black warm-ups? I didn't recognize our team at first. And what's with Nik's Notre Dame sweatshirt...non comprende.

I don't like the black warm ups either. The players might like them. But, they do a poor job of identifying us as a team. I actually wish we wore gold more often. It's would certainly be more unique.
