RobC2
I am new to ZipsNation, so my gripe is likely something you've been struggling with since you started ZipsNation. But I am continually dissappointed in the coverage given to our NCAA DIVISION I-A sports program by our supposedly LOCAL newspaper!!!Really, what is the problem?!I know I am not the only Zips fan who was slapped in the face by the bitter irony of the front page of the Beacon sports section Sunday. i.e., Terry Pluto's article entitled: "It's Time to Notice the Zips' Success." But what consumed 80% of the front page of Akron's paper? Needless to say an article on the CLEVELAND Browns!?!? Ouch!Q: And in today's sports section? A: NOT A SINGLE ARTICLE! Not a single WORD! Let alone front page material. In fact, there was not even a mention of the Wright State men's basketball game a week ago - ON THE DAY OF THE GAME!?!?Again, really, what is the problem?!The first sentence of Terry's article read, "If you're a basketball fan, Akron's best kept secret is begging for your attention." Perhaps Terry should have written, "If you're a Beacon Journal editor, Akron's best kept secret is begging for your attention." Or better, "We here at the Beacon Journal are doing our best to keep Akron athletics a secret."Dissappointed and bewildered, but none-the-less,Go Zips! InTheZone
I hate to burst this bash the beacon bubble, but they have gotten a lot better this year. They used to be atrocious, but whether jumping on the bandwagon or not, with limited resources they have covered the Zips pretty well from about the end of November on. Mike Rasor's doing a great job over there with his blog and DL Morgan had some good Zips articles to close out the season. Gary Estwick has also been pretty good covering recruiting, staying ahead of most of us on here even.
RobC2
It has gotten better. In fact, I discovered ZipsNation through the Zips blog on Ohio.com!!! For that I am grateful! I read the Zips blog every day. I just wish they would give the Zips more pub!!! It's the chicken - egg controversy. I believe if the Beacon would treat Zips athletics with more zeal, nominal college fans would get excited as well!
GP1
I have to agree with ITZ. The coverage during the MCB was very good and they ran a lot of different types of stories. I've even noticed they are getting the players numbers and names correct.Maybe the Beacon has earned some slack.....for now.
RobC2
I think that if the Beacon would merely cover the Zips like the Canton Rep covers the McKinley Bulldogs (just a high school team, mind you), it would do wonders to rally the community. If you'd read the Rep on a regular basis, you'd think McKinley athletics was the most exciting event anyone could ever hope for! Yes, it's quite small-townish, but none-the-less, the Rep is faithful to their good ol' Bulldogs!
JP Morgan
2 months of coverage does not cancel out years of apathy. Plus the patronizing tone is still there in all their articles. I'm happy to see the additional coverage but I'm a long ways away from supporting the Beacon.
RobC2
I agree about the patronizing tone of many of the articles. From the articles, one would generally come away with the feeling that the Beacon is doing UA a huge and unmerited favor by mentioning the petty athletic events happening at the U, and that fans are actually doing UA a favor by attending the games.I'm not a Beacon hater! I'm a subscriber! I just really wish they'd start pumping Zips athletics on a daily basis.

InTheZone
Must....bite....tongue....sooo....very....difficult....must....exercise....restrint....blood pressure....rising.... CK, I understand your hate of the Beacon and Pluto in particular, but since you don't get the paper I've gotta tell you, it's undeniable that they did a GREAT job with the Motor City Bowl and have done a good job with recruiting. Sure, they're just doing it now because we're successful, but their attention level towards the Zips is finally where it should be. One day there were four....FOUR....front page articles on Akron athletics. I don't think it's fair to complain at this point in time. MRasor0200
I agree with InTheZone. The ABJ has done much better at covering the Zips.I've always thought good editors cover 1) what people care about or 2) what people should care about, if they don't.As managing editor of the Buchtelite, we covered the crap out of the men's soccer team. Nobody cared at that point, but we thought they should. We also covered the crap out of football, because people actually did care about that.On the other hand, I nearly had an aneurism when two of our columnists wrote about USC. This is the University of Akron, not Southern California. It's a good thing nobody mentioned writing about Ohio State because I have a quick temper in the newsroom about those kinds of things. Z-P
Hey bro's..............It's been bad, but you know what? How about we live in the current and future. It really hasn't been bad of late.nm
Dr Z
My New Years resolution is to not comment on the LU anymore. BUT... you can't kick me :nutkick:kick me kick me kick me ...and then write a few articles for a few months and think I'm your friend It doesn't hurt me if someone buys a Beacon, but everybody here has been warned, so QUIT complaining when you don't see a snip-it telling when and where the Akron/Toledo game is the day of the game. Don't post when you see them print wrong info on the team.Just do a search on the site and read all the commentsthat have already been posted on the subject. Nothing anybody is going to type is going to be new on the subject.Did I just break my resolution?
RobC2
Tuesday a.m. - nice story on men's b-ball in the Beacon today. Ladies b-ball as well. Also had an interesting article on Chris Wells. Sounds like he's planning on taking classes at OSU this semester. I know there was a bit of speculation about him committing w/ the Zips, but it doesn't appear that will happen. (I think James Kennedy, Alex Allen & Aaron Boone will do just fine anyway - Boone was ranked by rivals as the 38th best back in the country - until he verballed w/ the Zips, then they knocked him down to 40th best - what's up w/ that?!)But anyway - nice story in the Beacon this a.m.And I agree w/ Rasor - excessive Buckeye stories drive me nuts!!! No pun intended.Go Zips!
Zipsrifle
I'm with Dr. Z and Cap'n. The Beacon has sucked on the Akron coverage since...... the beginning of time. I'm not letting them off the hook. Now, that we make a bowl, have a top ranked Soccer Team, and have a decent BB team, they decide to write some articles. I think everyone is looking at this the wrong way. The Beacon isn't doing UA a favor by writing about us.....UA is doing them a favor by giving them something to write about. They never gave us a lick of coverage when we sucked, now they are are best buddies. F 'EM!
Hilltopper
Well, it seems as though the cast has been set for BB coverage this season. Last nights contest was not covered by the ABJ. The story appeared to be based on a phone call after the game to KD. Its obvious that if an away game is farther away than say Can't State we might as well forget any coverage. The only other major sporting event last night was the CAVS home game so that cannot be an excuse. They did write a nice article about the womens game and a full preview of tonights Can't State game. :macc:
Hilltopper
I'm going to add to my rant about the ABJ. In todays edition there is a story about the death of Dave Brown. Dave was a local guy who went on to star at Michigan and later for 15 seasons in the NFL. It was nice that they put the story on the front of the sports section but they could at least check the facts. Brown is a graduate of GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL not EAST as mentioned in the story. The facts just seem to evade the ABJ.
scottditzen
I used to bring the Beacon down to Columbus when I had to work down there. My co-workers appreciated this for 2 reasons:1) The "crime reports" were beyond hysterical. I mean it. Bizarre. It was there I learned that a wife will strike a husband with absolutely ANYTHING she can get her hands on. The reporter who wrote them up should write for Letterman he's that good. Then, strangely enough, the reporters brother was killed in Akron and he had to report it.2) They would laugh as the paper got progressively thinner, finally resembling OSU's Lantern, or the Buchtellite, but with less original content. Barely a mention of Div 1 sports, be it Akron or K e n t. The BJ, home of the 1.5 page Sports section!! Yet thankfully they don't skimp on the precious 12 pages of DEALERSHIP ADS.Anyhow, the image of Akron to many outsiders is that it's a strange, twilight zone-ish backwater of a city. At least, the content and shoddy appearance of the ABJ perpetuates that image. But I don't care, I like to root for the underdog anyway. :macc: p.s. for the record, I never actually buy the ABJ b/c I've been protesting their lack of U of A coverage for 5-6 years now. I'm awaiting an editorial apologizing for that. Until that happens I'd rather throw my 25 cents in the river.
