Blue & Gold Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Here is a nice article from today's ABJ concerning the Zips' forthcoming trip to Canada. Thanks, Tom! Go Zips! P.s. and here is an ABJ link to the Zips' Canadian schedule. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Too bad Nik can't go on the trip. But I guess it helps the coaches evaluate what kind of talent we have behind him at that position. Quote

P.s. and here is an ABJ link to the Zips' Canadian schedule. Thanks for the links, B&G Since Nik is a known commodity, I don't mind at all the fact that he won't be making the trip. Hopefully Egner's concussion is subsiding. Quote
Dr Z Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 The NCAA calls these “foreign tours” and allows schools to do it once in a four-year period. Dambrot elected to do it this summer because of a major roster turnover that includes the departure of four seniors and the influx of six newcomers. Good choice KD. I haven't been this excited for a season in some time. Quote
GP1 Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Good choice KD. I haven't been this excited for a season in some time. I agree. This trip could be the start of what I hope is a long winning streak at the beginning of next season. Quote
zip37 Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Any idea if the games will be on 1350? I suspect not, but hope I'm wrong. Quote

Captain Kangaroo Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 One of the Montreal players who was staying at the team hotel phoned room service asking for some pepper. "Black pepper, or white pepper?" asked the concierge. "Toilette pepper," said the point guard. Quote

ZachTheZip Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Regarding practice today, our very own GA Tim Carroll tweeted the following: "1st practice went well. Guys worked hard and learned a lot. Round 2 in 3 hours." "better than we've ever been. We're stacked with talent 1-13" Quote
zippyfan34 Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 I know practices probably aren't officially open to the public but if I was standing in the upper level of the JAR watching is anyone going to say anything to me? I am looking for inspiration as I am working on a Zips basketball song for the coming year. I really need to see the new guys so I know what to write about them. Quote

Stop by the basketball office around 9 AM and ASK for permission to watch the practice. Asking KD is the best coach to gain permission from. Tuesdays's morning practice session begins at 9:30 AM. See you there. I already have permission. Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 ....."better than we've ever been. We're stacked with talent 1-13" What I want to know is if Tim Carroll is a dreamy-eyed optimist or if he's generally a pretty realistic guy. Because if he's generally a pretty realistic guy, this is a pretty stunning statement. Quote

akronzips71 Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 This guy Justice looks too good to be true. 27 PPG and a 3.95 GPA How did KD get him to come to Akron? He should have been on EVERYONES radar. Careful, use him or lose him. If he can throw in close to 20 a game, combined with Zeke and Nik on the inside this is an NCAA team almost for sure. Quote
Quickzips Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 This guy Justice looks too good to be true. 27 PPG and a 3.95 GPA How did KD get him to come to Akron? He should have been on EVERYONES radar. Careful, use him or lose him. If he can throw in close to 20 a game, combined with Zeke and Nik on the inside this is an NCAA team almost for sure. He played for a tiny high school that didn't draw a lot of attention. I haven't seen any of the practices thus far, but I am a little skeptical on Justice. It is a big leap from high school to D-I college in the first place, to come from a really small high school division to D-I makes the leap all that much bigger. The D-I landscape is riddled with kids who could fill up the nets in high school, but never make it at this level. I want to see what this kid can actually do before I start calling him a key cog on a team with aspirations of making a deep NCAA run. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 If he can throw in close to 20 a game, combined with Zeke and Nik on the inside this is an NCAA team almost for sure. What is the highest ppg any KD-era player has averaged for a single college season? Without looking, I'll say 13.8ppg. I think is is safe to say Justice won't get close to 20ppg. But I think we have a chance to be successful in 2011-12 anyhow. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 I know the score of these games won't really mean that much, but THIS might provide an early 2011-2012 frame of reference since McGill will be playing 5 other NCAA D-1 squads in addition to the Zips (including Illinois St and UCF). It looks like UQAM is also playing a few of these NCAA schools including UA. It's interesting that McGill actually defeated UVa back in 2008. Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 I hope that Justice's talent transfers well from a small HS to the DI college stage. It makes me recall Nick Goddard, who shot the lights out at Wadsworth HS. He didn't lose his shooting eye at UA, but the rest of his game beyond 3-point shooting doomed him to the end of the bench. Of course, Goddard was a walk-on and not a scholarship player, so expectations are obviously much higher for Justice. Quote
