I, as an Akron Zips fan care...just saying in case anyone know of any local coaches that are interested in checking this out on saturday. Just figured you wanted to get to know what the women's basketball players' names are so that you can at least ACT like you care when they play Notre Dame to start the season, beat Florida State at home, and win the MAC Championship this year...
i dont care because i am an akron zip fan. the program has gone nowhere and i would bet it holds our mens team back financially speaking. just like football to soccer or our track sports. besides, if you all cared, then you would be sure to show up so my sisters freshman squad doesnt beat the womens games in attendance. or maybe you are the dozen or so non parents to be there.
@mes102Come on man...sometimes you have to consider the source!!! My nephew is mentally handicapped and nothing he says ever offends because I know he does not have the capacity to know the difference. Not saying this guy is mentally handicapped but I also would not be worrying about anything he says. If he is your friend...you need to find a better class of friends. ;)

While several folks showed up to watch today's (Saturday) practice no onefrom ZipsNation was there except possibly me.According to KD this was the first practice where the players were "looking sharp".It was a long, hard practice of over four hours. A lot of drills went well. "Tree"is picking up his game nicely. That is a huge blessing. A fun drill is watching ball reversal that ends in a dunk. Most of the Zips can dunk the ball easily. Any one with basketball savvy (visiting HS and college coaches) speak wellof what they are witnessing. For the rest of us, this is going to be a fun year.Sunday practice at 9 AM. The coaches will push those tired legs ,,, HARD.

Pluto mentions the Zips in the PD.
About Akron basketball ... 1. Benedictine product Nick Harney had 30 points and nine rebounds in the Zips' most recent scrimmage. Coach Keith Dambrot said, "Nick had not been practicing well, but he really turned it on in the scrimmage. He has a lot of natural ability." 2. Dambrot is using Harney and Euclid product Demetrius Treadwell at power forward, but it's doubtful either will start. That spot is held down by Nick Cvetinovic, who is a second-team all-MAC player. "Treadwell and Harney remind me of [Jeremiah] Wood and Rome [Romeo Travis] when they first arrived," said Dambrot. "We'll see if these guys end up being as good as Rome and Wood." 3. The Zips have more size and depth than ever before under Dambrot. There's 7-foot center Zeke Marshall: "He's improved a lot -- I just wish he'd realize that he can be great." The junior is a defensive force in the middle. Add in Cvetinovic, Treadwell and Harney and that's four players in the front court. Dambrot also is pleased with power forward Josh Egner from Massillon Jackson. 4. The Zips will start Alex Abreu at point guard, but Dambrot is looking a backup. Xavier transfer Brian Walsh is a possibility. At 6-5, he also may play shooting guard. Dambrot believes sorting out his backcourt could be a key to the season. 5. The Zips have been to the NCAA tournament in two of the last three seasons. Expectations are high once again, and this is one of his most athletic teams ever. "But they still have to develop that Akron toughness," said Dambrot. "We are a little naked when it comes to leadership, some of our upper classmen have to step up. But you're right, we can be pretty good by the end of the season."

Possibly? I would think you'd know for certain if you were in attendance.
Unfortunately ZN.o fans do not have a flashing blue light on their heads. Thus, if I do not know them personally I have no way of knowing them.Suffice it to say that I do recognize most of the HS and college coachesas I have spoken to many of them in the past. Most of the people in attendance were coaches and a few of their players. If any one from ZN.o drops in on a practice look me up. I am usuallysitting near the impromptu scorer's table. I am old with a wooly bear mustache(and just about as cheesy). I'm the old dude not wearing glasses.

You really have to wonder how much of an impact having Harney and Tree will have on coverage from the Cleveland media the next few years. Maybe it is just me, but I can't particularly remember articles like this from Pluto or anyone else the last few years. Maybe having a couple of local boys will do some good when it comes to the Cleveland press. Can't hurt.In terms of on the court performance it still sounds like Harney is ahead of Tree in terms of development. 30 and 9 in a scrimmage is nothing to sneeze at. If Nick can give us some performances like that against real competition when it counts, and with all of the other talent we have, man is this team going to be good.I am a little concerned by the issues at PG. Abreu is only a sophomore, and he struggled at times last year in the starting role. I've never fully bought the idea of Walsh as a PG (starting or backup), and it looks like he needs to pick his game up a bit if we are going to use him there. I know some on here will point to Q as a backup PG, but Q is not without his faults either. His decision making will have to improve quite a bit for me to be comfortable seeing him get some extended run at PG.I am a bit puzzled by the leadership comments. Particularly with Cvetnovic on this team. Nik is a senior, and from my vantage point has always had some of the better leadership characteristics of any of the Zips in recent years. I don't know who this was really directed at, or if this is just a general barb on the part of KD trying to motivate his guys to get just a little extra out of them or what.

Overall that is a fair evaluation.I think that Nick Harney is far to valuable and skilled to keep in reserve. Most likely Nick will be the starting small forward just a few games intothe season. Quincy Diggs has been in a funk the past few practices.Q you need to shake that. You are another valuable player we need onthe court. Fight for your position. At this point Josh Egner is Zeke Marshall's back up. But, Josh is actuallya forward, so look for a double power forward combination when Zekesits. This has worked well in the past. Treadwell factors in here as well.Speaking of "Tree", he has come on strong of late. It is exciting to watchthis young freshman who plays like an upper classman. Get tough, Tree.Zip Watcher previously mentioned he sees Chauncey Gilliam asthe back up small forward. I disagree. Chauncey is a shooting guard in Akron's scheme. Now, I do like how Chauney plays defense at the lowpost on weak side help. He should get a lot of points on "stick backs". For I Speak the Truth, C J Oldham treated himself to a "buzz" cutalong with Matt Futch. So he no longer looks like Q or Harney. Me,no way would I cut my hair that short with winter coming on.The more I think about how deep Akron is in quality BIG guardsthe more I envision a lot of three guard line ups. I think Alex has excellent ball handling skills and sees the floor best ofany of them. Alex needs to take command of this group and make themHIS team. Brian Walsh continues to improve his skill set and can runthe point effectively.Speaking of C J Oldham, this kid is pretty darn good, a hard working playerwho will see a decent amount of floor time thru the season.

The more I've thought about it I'm not sure there is going to be that much delineation between the SF and SG spots on this team. I think any or all of Nitro, Walsh, Q and Gilliam can probably play either position, and there will probably be times when 2 or more of those guys are on the floor together and you really won't be able to tell who is playing what spot. Each one of those guys obviously brings their own unique skill set, but those skill sets lend themselves well to playing either position. We've seen Nitro play SG and SF in the past, as well as Q. Gilliam's ability to score in a variety of different ways lends itself to either position. I don't know as much about Walsh, but he certainly has the size at 6'4" or 6'5" to play some SF in the MAC (although it sounds like we will see him split more minutes between PG and SG).I am very curious to hear how things are progressing with Deji and Blake. This team is so deep right now, that I don't know as we NEED either of them right now, but I am wondering if either one is stepping up in practice to the point where KD will have to seriously consider playing them. Deji is a particularly interesting project to me. A 6'3" guard with a 6'9" wingspan is not something you see in this conference a whole lot (or really in college hoops to begin with), and he could really add another dimension to this team if he is ready to see some minutes this year.

Assuming that neither of the two true freshmen play significant minutes this season, this is the way I see it:Grouping the Zips' SGs and SFs into the single category of wings, Nitro, Q, Gilliam, Walsh and Harney probably share most of the wing time. Depending on which wings are in the game at any given time, the best rebounder might be considered the SF and the best ball handler and outside shooter the SG.Rico is the only pure PG, so backup PG time will almost certainly come from one or more of the wings. With five talented wing players competing for PT, it would obviously help the team a lot if one of those five focused more on improving their PG skills.Grouping the only C in with the PFs in the bigs category, Zeke, the Serb, Egner and Tree should share most of those minutes. The player who I can't yet fit into one of those three broad groups is Green. On the one hand, he has a sweet 3-point stroke for a big man. On the other hand, he's apparently bulked up to 230 pounds, which suggests he might be suited to banging under the basket. So he could possibly fit in both the wings and bigs categories. It's also possible that Harney could float between the wings and bigs roles depending on game circumstances.Taking all of the above into consideration, I see a lot of flexibility in this season's team. There are 11 players who could earn significant PT without even counting the possibility of either of the two true freshmen developing more quickly than expected. While the team gets a lot shorter in the frontcourt with Zeke on the bench, they get a lot taller in the backcourt with Rico sitting. The shortest backcourt with Rico on the bench would be 6-4 and 6-5 (Nitro and Walsh or Gilliam), and the tallest would be 6-5 and 6-6 (Walsh or Gilliam and Q).A lot will depend on how well all 11 players develop. But if all goes well, the Zips could present a tough matchup for almost every opponent on their schedule this season.

I think that eadership comment was directed at a few people. I ge the feeling that the primary target was Abreu. He has to be the floor general now and leadership is a big part of that. I also feel like it applies to McClanahan and Zeke, who are veteran players on a young team. Zeke is the star, whether he likes it or not, and he needs to at least lead by example on the court and McClanahan is a senior like Nik but he seems more content to take a following role than a leading one. I think that Dials and Futch can teach them all a thing or two about on-court leadership.

@ Gozips... 12:30 practice again tomorrow? I would have said hello last week, but like you I cannot put a face to a zipsnation profile. I am kind of a younger guy, and sat in the middle behind the scorers table last week.
Saturday practice starts at 1 PM.Remember, meet the team is at five.
