tbozeglav
Yup... everyone's becoming overly consumed by this pipe dream. Come back to earth, people... Let's not get lost in what we wish this university could be come. Im not against JT in the slightest, but after today's flurry of rumor-milling, I wont be disappointed one bit if he looks elsewhere. johnnyzip84
The false rumor about Tressel being on campus today could lead some to believe an offer never existed and that this was all a hoax. Thanx
Indians06
No one is ruining anything. Only people are making themselves look stupid by trying to discredit anyone who gives a reason why Tressel isn't coming here. It's all the hating the messenger thing. Tressel can get a masters from here but that doesn't make him a zip. That doesn't bring him the pride and loyalty his undergrad does. Doesn't make Akron home over Youngstown State and Ohio State where he spent over a decade at each winning national titles. I heard someone say it would be a win-win by Tressel coming here. How would that be a win win for him? He prides himself on staying loyal to his assistants and always staying in touch. Tressel hated going against Dantonio at Michigan State. Do you really think Tressel is going to enjoy making Akron a MAC powerhouse while bringing down his former assistant Darrell Hazell? Plus his long time friend Jon Heacock, brother of Jim Heacock, is the D-Cord there. And why would he donate millions to YSU to build a new indoor facility to help with recruiting. Then sit down with kids YSU and UA are recruiting and explain why his name is on the building in Ytown? The main point I'm making and that people are telling me is, he's not going to burn his friendships at Can't and Youngstown for a program he has realitvily no ties with? zen
The Tressel-UA story will be over whenever the two parties choose to make absolutely clear to the public that the story is over. Yeah, I remember last Wednesday, in the morning I read an article which said that the previous day Urban Meyer flat out denied having any discussion with OSU about a coaching job. By lunch, I was sitting in Brubakers and the news was reporting a deal was made. I am not saying that this is in any way applicable to the UA-Tressel situation, but you just cannot trust denials
jem101
Geez people, lay off the guy. Ian is one of the biggest Akron supporters (figuratively and literally) out there. tbozeglav
ZipRoo, youve got a lot of balls to call out the most loyal, supportive, and dedicated student that I have ever seen like you have, especially using the wording you did. What he's done personally for this university, to me, cannot be matched. Grow up and realize theres no need to get upset over all this like you have. You act as if he has any kind of hand in determining our next coach...

ZipFan42
The Tressel-UA story will be over whenever the two parties choose to make absolutely clear to the public that the story is over. If Tressel ultimately decides not to accept the offer, he could do UA a great service by making a joint public announcement with Dr. Proenza about what a great opportunity the UA head coaching job is, but it just wasn't the right fit for him at this time, and he reluctantly had to decline. Further, if as part of that announcement he were to publicly offer to help UA in its search for the right coach, that would also work to help keep the UA head coaching position in the news. Even without becoming head coach, Tressel still has tremendous leverage to help make UA more attractive to an up and coming Jim Tressel of the future. I think Tressel is a decent guy who has loyalty and affinity to NE Ohio and possibly UofA, but why would he help them out now? He gave his advice (recommended hiring Fickell) 2 years ago and TW ignored it.

If some of you are fine with that, more power to you. I don't have time to waste on the immature antics of a guy out for a cheap laugh. This football situation is no laughing matter. bobbyake
you have to admit though, the Tressel on campus rumor did draw a lot of attention. Enough attention to make an offer denial public? One way or another, you would think Akron or Tressel would come out and set the record straight. The attention this has drawn should be enough to get that.
tbozeglav
Can someone explain to me how this one rumor constitutes the public lashing of one of our most dedicated supporters? ZipRoo
Can someone explain to me how this one rumor constitutes the public lashing of one of our most dedicated supporters? Okay, maybe an overreaction. The twitter fiasco obviously had no bearing on JT or the job, but it was an immature use of the technology and wasted a lot of people's time. That's the kind of stuff you expect out of "one of our most dedicated supporters?" Sorry, not me. Not to mention, how stupid does it make ALL Zips fans look to the nation when we're falling hook, line and sinker for a false trail started by one of "our own?" I don't know if we were even talking about the same person, as there was much twitter and rumor abuse today by many. I just happened to see one especially braggart post. Bottom line, there were folks here who knew the widespread impact Tressel coming here would make, and we didn't take this hiring lightly. The out-of-control twitter stuff made a mockery out of it. And a lot of people passed on false information and now have backtracking to do. To know it was done intentionally for no good reason is....wow. I do apologize if I offended anyone with my initial reaction. It's been a stressful day. Here's hoping a lot of things today have been smokescreens for the "rumored" interview tomorrow. I'm doubting it now, as I'm left not knowing what to believe. It's like watching a Kardashian TV show.

tbozeglav
Just had this pop up in my inbox from UA Zipmail Editor's note: We wanted our UA community to be aware of an important message that our director of athletics sent to fans and supporters of Zips athletics. As you know, we announced Saturday evening that Rob Ianello will not return as our head football coach. Coach Ianello and his staff worked hard for our football program, and I am appreciative of their efforts. These decisions are never simple. The evaluation process that we conduct for all 19 of our varsity teams is ongoing and comprehensive. Coach Ianello and I communicated constantly during his tenure, and we had many conversations over the final weeks of the season regarding the future of our football program, including in the days leading up to our last game. I was aware that Coach's mother had passed away earlier that week and of his travel arrangements, but we talked after Friday's game and agreed that it would be best that I share with him my decision once it was final. I called him as soon as possible on Saturday to inform him that we would move in a new direction. In the end, I determined that this decision is in the best interest of our student-athletes and our football program. While we have improved in academics, compliance and our community involvement – and we will continue to emphasize those areas – we also believe and aspire to be more competitive on the field. I know all Zips fans are eager to see our team succeed as well. As we look ahead to the next chapter of Zips Football, it will be important that everyone associated with The University of Akron welcome the new coach and his staff to our University and the Akron community. I know our fans are looking forward to learning who will lead our program, and I ask for your support – especially by purchasing season tickets and attending games – so that we can build a championship program together. We already have begun our search process, which will move as quickly as possible while we do our due diligence to ensure we identify the best candidate. Even though the 2011 season is over, we are mindful that, because of recruiting, this is still an important time in our college football calendar. I welcome your feedback as part of the process. As always, you can contact me with any suggestions you have, whether it is specific candidates or just characteristics that you feel are important for our next coach to possess. While I may not respond to every submission, please know that I will read all of them. I also will not comment publicly on the search until we announce our new head coach. As I told our nearly 100 football student-athletes, the future is bright for Zips Football and I am excited for them and for this new opportunity. There is a great amount of interest in this position, and we will identify a terrific leader to guide our program. Thank you for your support of Zips Athletics. I look forward to introducing you to the next leader of Akron Football. Go Zips! Tom Wistrcill Director of Athletics
zippyfan34
If someone wants to drive up to Berea tonight, they could ask Tressels brother at the Kiwanis board meeting tonight if he has any inside information .
