Talking Tressel

... all of us got caught up in the Tressel hoopla.
I always believed that there were too many things working against the situation for both parties to agree. I believe I wrote "I would be SHOCKED" if it was able to be worked out.

okay..."the MAJORITY of us got caught in the hoopla"...Better?

Heck, I characterized the Tressel stuff as "crazy talk", but I got caught up in it too as it escalated. It was hard not to hope it had some validity.

Postmortems on situations like this should involve everyone analyzing exactly how accurate all their sources were, and how much weight those sources should carry in the future.

There may have been reasonably accurate information from some direct sources, but then layers of optimism added on as the rumors were passed from person to person.

We now know for a fact that Tressel was offered, because TW said in the ABJ article that "Coach Tressel has shared with us that he is not interested in coaching at Akron." They could not have known that without asking him. So that part of the rumor was true.

The fact that UA actually did offer the job to Tressel certainly deserves the level of excitement the rumor of that offer created among Zips fans.

There has been no official confirmation of when the offer was made, how much was offered, or how long Tressel considered before turning the offer down, so we can't really measure how accurate our sources were on those details. Maybe we can find out in retrospect, or maybe we'll never know for sure.

Some of our sources may have been accurate in what they told us at the time they told us, while others may have shared the best information they had, but their information was flawed.

We don't really know for sure if UA wanted this leaked out to help create a buzz or if UA really wanted this to remain confidential and they're unhappy with the internal leaks.

So, if anyone else other than me is interested in learning from this experience, maybe we can keep this thread alive and discuss what we found out in the aftermath that either confirms or invalidates what we heard along the way from our sources.

But we should all be cautious about revealing too much detail about our best sources. Some people are pretty good at putting together details about sources that allows the sources to be identified and outed. Outing good sources is the best way to lose good sources. So if you think you have good sources, be sure to protect their identities so that you can call on them again.

Just out of curiosity, what did you order at Oliverio's and how long did it take for you decide what you wanted? ;)

It's painful when one falls off their unicorn right in the middle of realityville. ;)

I talked to a worker in the student union and Tressel is in the board of trustees meeting right now

Welcome to ZN.o, but he's probably just in there recommending coaches for the board of trustees. In fact, an ESPN Cleveland intern has said he heard a few names and are researching the names as I type

the radio interview with Tressel that discusses the rumor: http://www.610wtvn.com/player/?mid=21625794

The question was if there was any validity to the story that he was to meet with the University of Akron for the head coaching job, as the report had mention. His answer was 'no validity.'

What I heard was Tressel turned down an offer on Monday, which could be why Tom Wistrcill stated his comment the way he did. Will we ever find out if an offer was made? Who knows. What we do know is that Tressel informed the university that he's not interested. So the university must have inquired.

Coach Tressel, we offered you a chance at redemption. A chance to move beyond your past mistakes and to build something special. We went to extraordinary lengths to prove how much we thought of you, offering you triple what any MAC school has ever paid a coach before. We were willing to eat your sanctions without a second's hesitation. And you still turned us down. I hope you rot away, as a bitter man who is only known for bringing scandal and ruin to your old teams.

Wow is that what we've become? So cynical that we wish ill on coaches who turn down coaching our football team that accumulated 2 wins in 2 years.

I think your post is very sad and am glad you are in the minority. Tressel doesn't need redemption, nor does he want to coach in the MAC. The man has 5 national titles and the state of Ohio respects him very much.

What everyone here doesn't know is that Tressel married into one of the richest families in Ytown. As I said, money isn't an option.

As I said, and everyone criticized me. TRESSEL WON'T COACH HERE!

I'm happy to finally see our University not settling for second best. They tossed their hat in and went all out. Turns out we were right about all the talk and had every reason to get excited. Those puffing out your chests and bragging about how they new JT wasn't coming to Akron can go ahead and get over yourselves. At least we had something to get excited about and enjoyed doing it.

Those of you getting short with JT need to grow up a little bit. We tried, he said no, now we move on.

I think the thing that upset me about all the naysayers was the idea they had that we didn't deserve a Jim Tressel. Most of the naysayers on this board didn't have that attitude, but you found it with ease if you looked elsewhere.

Eggplant parmigiana and a glass of chianti. Took about 5 seconds to decide. Some things require less thought, analysis and consideration than others. :)

Now that's what I'm talking about! I think I took a little longer to select lasagna and a St Pauli Girl :(

What's the point about getting excited about something that never had a chance at happening?

It's not about deserving Tressel. It's about it being impossible to get that kind of name at Akron. If you want to waste your time going after coaches that don't want to come here fine. I'm glad Tressel is an adviser on this.

Do we deserve a Tressel? NO! The MAC is at the bottom of FBS football. We pay $300,000 for our coach where the average in the MAC is $478,000. The national average is $1.38 million. We're also coming off of back to back 1-11 seasons. So no, we don't deserve Tressel, who while at OSU was one of the top 5 coaches in the entire country.

If you can't get behind this then you need to go ahead and GTFO. Yes, we deserve a Tressel. This University deserves the absolute best and I can't stand the people who think otherwise. If you are going to be one of those people who look at Akron as a second rate institute then I have no use for you and you might as well go ahead and go back to being one of the ZN.o members who read and keep quiet.

Guess you missed the speculation that this was part of a grander plan to bring in a big-name coach at a bigger-than-MAC salary to elevate the program in preparation for a move to a bigger-name conference.

Personally, I'd rather be associated with big thinkers who fail while shooting for the big time than small thinkers who succeed in perpetuating themselves in the small time.
