While I wish him the best wherever he goes, as I enjoyed watching him as a player, I cannot admire the abandon ship philosophy nor will I accept the "lack of NFL exposure at Akron" garbage. Either way, I will fully support Coach Bowden and the players and fans who remain loyal to the cause.

Doesn't he have to sit out a year?

Isn't it a violation of some NCAA rule to get fired and try to bring the players with you?

If he got his bachelor's no he doesn't have to sit out a year (ala Russell Wilson at Wisconsin, Greg Paulus at Syracuse).

Not sure if is a violation or not. Dayne Crist is reuniting with Charlie Weiss in Kansas as well for his extra year of eligibility.

I can't understand how he could have any allegiance to iCoach and would want to follow him.

Perhaps a promised starting spot at a BCS school is enough. What other BCS team would he be able to start for? But at the same time, all the former Akron coaches at Kansas coach the offense and not the defense, so I don't know how they can make such a promise.

I am not knocking him, but maybe he won't be such a star playing against BCS players and with BCS players along side him to make tackles.

I love BW & hope he stays. But he rarely "blew up" a play. Most of his tackles were 3,4 & 5 yards downfield. He's excellent at reading plays. But I really believe a big reason his stats were so gaudy was because the rest of the team was so weak. Someone had to make the tackle. It was usually BW. I think he'll kinda disappear on a team with more talent. IMHO, his best bet (for NFL exposure) would be to remain a Zip.

Exactly right. Wagner is a good MAC player. He is the only good player on the UA defense.

He wouldn't even start om most of the top 40 teams in the country, let alone be a star.

Wagner's best move, by FAR, will be to stay with the Zips and dedicate his last year at UA to turning the ship in the right direction. If he has NFL talent, he'll get a fair shot in the NFL regardless. It's foolish for him to think otherwise, especially with Terry Bowden as the new HC.

Brian Wagner is class through and through. He hasn't "abandoned" Akron at all. He came here to play for the Zips and get his degree. He accomplished that goal. He lived through a terrible 2 years under Ianello and gave everything he had. Even changed his major for the team. It is probably no surprise to any of you that I think the world of Brian and his family. I would give a lot to see him come back for his last year at Akron. But let me tell you all this much...the only person who has said anything about Brian transferring to another school to enhance his chances in the NFL is Rasor.

Good post.

Wagner will need a boatload of luck to get in the NFL.

I think I was the first one last season to say he makes too many tackles dowonfield. Nice MAC player, not an NFL player. Come back to Akron next year Brian...It's your best shot. Kansas is a dump.

So are you saying he hasn't asked for the U to release him from his scholarship then? Personally, I'd think the 2 years under Ionello would leave such a bad taste in my mouth I'd do about anything to support the new coaching staff and my teammates to end my Akron career on a positive note and be known as one of the guys who helped turn this program around. Just me though.

If he is thinking of leaving, he is already gone. We need guys who are all in. If he wants to stay and be all in, then fine, but I don't think that is the case here.

Its been said before and prior to last year that Wagner is a guy you want on your team because of ALL the things he brings to the table. Shoot some people were talking about wanting him as a RB or even a safety. Wherever he ends up if he continues to be 'productive' he'll get noticed even if its as a free, agent special teams prospect. Since he already has his degree and given what he has done on the field he is obviously very driven. If the 'right' NFL team works him out he could stick for a while.

Brian will get an offer from the team in Columbus. Doesn't mean he will take it, but he will get an offer.
Makes sense, he is that good. BUT, will he get PT there? If his goal is a professional career in football, if he hired me to be his adviser, I would suggest staying put. He has made a name for himself here, and will continue to do that next season. I hope TB has spoken with him.

PS If he goes to Columbus, will he play the same position as he did here?

Yes. The staff there doesn't have much confidence in their current LBacking group and believes he will start right away. It would be his job to lose. So, I guess the answer to your last question is yes as well.

With the little I know, just from reading here, that's going to be a tough decision. I might advise him to move. Hard opportunity to turn down. BTW GP1, from what you wrote throughout the year, I got the impression that you were not real impressed with BW, does this change your opinion of his abilities at all?

Brian played stellar here on pretty terrible if not horrible teams. I wish he wouldn't leave but can understand why he would leave. If I remember right Brian's only Div 1 offer was Akron and even though this has been a trying four years...one would think that would have meant something to him. Playing in the NFL will happen for him if he is good enough regardless of where he plays.

No. He still made too many tackles down field in a bad conference. Brian is a $75 bottle of wine. Good, but not great. There are a lot of good $75 bottles of wine.

The offer from Columbus is more of a statement of their opinion of their current LB situation and the need to fill needs immediately. Using a scholarship on an experienced college player for one year while the new coaching staff gets their feet under them is probably a good idea for tOSU. He will have a better line playing in front of him, but when the Zips DLine was playing well at the beginning of the year, he was still making too many tackles downfield. Not sure how that will change when playing against BCS talent every week. I don't see it changing. At this point in his career, he is what he is.

Blackburn was a better player playing in a defense not suited for his ability.
