Blue & Gold
I know it's a hypothetical, but that would be incredibly lame & he shouldn't want to be here working for higher-ups who would have that thought process.

Just making it to a championship level game at that level should show he has the skills to lead people. One thing most fans noticed RI lacked. hiroad1
If the outcome of the game today was the basis of deciding whether to hire Winters, then he never should have been considered as a candidate, and UA athletics would be truly run by idiots. Either the guy is good enough to be our our coach or he is not. Being able to say that you are hiring a guy who just won a natitional championship would add some sizzle to an announcement and made for a good story, but this is about hiring a guy to take on a tough rebulding effort. One game makes no difference. No way this has any bearing on the decision if they are intent on Paul.

ZipperRoo44
I am a huge fan of Paul Winters and think that he should get the job hands down. That being said I fully expect to have an announcement by Tuesday that has someone other than Paul as the new Zips coach. I have heard or read about the following people being involved in the search. Joe Tresey, just fired UCLA Defensive Coordinator > former Akron Defensive Coordinator Mike Stoops, recently released head coach of Arizona > Youngstown native Scot Loeffler Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks Coach at Temple > Akron native Bobby Johnson, Offensive Line Coach at Indiana > former Akron assistant coach Shawn Watson, Offensive Coordinator at Louisville > former Miami of Ohio assistant coach and the mystery candidate that has been secret until now is former Minnesota & Can't State head coach Glen Mason. Current Akron assistant Mitch Browning has been pushing Mason and his Big 10 ties strong to Wistricil who also used to work at Minnesota. Mason would be a big name along the same line as Solich at Ohio. He took Minnesota to 7 bowl games in 10 years and has also been the head coach at Kansas. ZipRoo
Interesting. I don't know why people didn't think of Mason earlier. Don't even know what he's been doing lately. Glen Mason would definitely make a "splash" announcement, and yes, I would equate his coming to Akron... to Solich & OU. This is starting to get interesting again. The only similarity between Solich and Mason is they both could be AARP members. Mason never finished higher than fourth in the Big Ten. Solich never finished lower than fourth in his conference at Nebraska. Solich has coached in a national championship game. Mason may have seen one in person. Mason would make a splash; however, he is too old to climb up the diving-board ladder. I have no idea how his name come up at Akron all the time. Actually, I'm surprised it took this long for someone to bring it up. There is not a more unimpressive guy, who gets mentioned for jobs, than Mason. The guys on your list who might not have had his hiring announced imediately are Loeffler and Watson.. Thats only because I believe both teams are still playing?.(unlike Akron). But usually if coordinators get a HC job they can go immediately. The others, including Mason, appear to have been available. If a current Akron asisstant is 'pushing' Mason it may not be the best recomendation given the previous regime's performance. But,since it doesn't seem anybody knows anything for sure....? I find it hard to believe that Scott Loeffler has had any significant involvement in the search for a coach. First, he is not just the QB coach at Temple, he is the offensive coordinator. He's been totally focused on Wyoming the last month. Second, its hard to imagine that Temple would appreciate him advising Akron - a conference division opponent - about which coach would be best to turn the program around. Maybe he's had some informal and minimal input. I thought the mystery candidate might have been Matt Campbell, now the Toledo coach. I think Campbell signed a contract at UT for something like $235 thousand a year as a base salary. Dirt cheap. If it is PW, the announcement should be coming pretty quickly. ZachTheZip
Glen Mason would be the worst possible thing. You thought Ianello was hated? At least he had to earn his hate. Mason coached at Can't, and so already has a built-in animosity among a huge portion of the Zips fanbase. We should not hire him. He should never even be allowed on campus. Who will we invite into our facilities next, Dean Pees?

InTheZone
It would be pretty ironic to see Coach Tresey hired over Coach Winters, seeing as they were both coordinators at the same time at Akron, and while Coach Winters' offenses were putting up 470 a game, Tresey's D's were giving up even more. Tresey was a good guy, wish him the best, but definitely not the kind of coach we need right now.
InTheZone
And let me just end the speculation.... barring a "June Jones" situation, Coach Winters will be announced this week.

Think his legacy would be different? It is always nice to see people call that play the way it was. Among OSWho fans, maybe his legacy would have been different. They love to remind you that they won something a decade ago to cover for their more recent failures. But, to most fans outside their brainwashed umbrella, they forgot about OSWho winning a title a long, lone time ago. That answers the legacy question. My point was in reference to whether any single game should make someone change their mind about a coach's ability.
