Kangaroo Craig
If this is true, then I would have to think that UCLA interim HC and former Zip QB is now the leading candidate. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/in...t_be_akron.html

They better get this one right, folks. Or heads should be rolling down Buchtel Common. Alternatively, mobs with pitchforks and torches will be marching UP Buchtel Common. (This assumes, of course, that there's enough of us left to constitute an actual mob.)
Zipgrad01
Unless I hear that ua decided to pass this is devastating news for the football program. A former alum and player turns his supposed dream job down to stay at a d2 school. I wonder how low they are going to have to go on their list to get ANYONE to take this job? I completely agree with you. If a D-II coach turned us down, it's a sad commentary on the state of our football program. I know we don't know anything, but didn't the Detroit article seem to indicate that they hadn't even talked to each other? Although I did not want Winters, for a number of reasons, I still would be surprised if we didn't at least interview him again, like we did two years ago. akronad
At this point of the process, I think we are beyond giving Winters a 2nd interview. I am surmising that they have a 2nd nd 3rd candidate in mind. I am guessing we will hear something tomorrow.
ZipperRoo44
The fact that our folks drove to Detroit to offer Winters and he turned them down should tell you everything about this search. I wonder who all was in on the offer as anything short of Proenza making this offer himself is very disappointing. http://www.detnews.com/article/20111219/SP...ith-Wayne-State
g-mann17
This news depends on some things. What if Loeffler was the guy, but they threw a knowingly bad offer at Winters to appease the people asking for Winters? At least now they can say "we offered and he insulted us by turning it down, he didn't even counter offer". What if they were willing to go more if he had won the NC at Wayne State? More important, who's the idiot trying to save her?

It could have just been a courtesy offer. We'll probably never know. I think that theory has at least some credibility, since we've waited until his team was done playing. But, if this theory is true, would it really make the Winters supporters any happier?
g-mann17
But, if this theory is true, would it really make the Winters supporters any happier? Well, its a theory and not fact. They can't be angry unless it comes out that they offered Winters some insulting deal that was clearly meant to be a "well we offered" kind of deal. Hilltopper
I don't blame Winters one bit for deciding to stay put at WSU. Why in the world would he want to start over again? He has things running smoothly at WSU and if he can get similar $$$ from his current job he should stay. Who ever gets the Zips job will have to work 80-100 hrs a week for a couple years. Its a young mans job, not a mid fifties guy who has already turned around one coaches graveyard.

We look like a bunch of clowns for failing to lure a D-II coach and alum to our D-1 coaching job. On the theory - What if Winters called his bluff and took the job? Would Wistercill risk losing his #1 choice? No chance. Dumb internet theory. Dumber AD.
zippy5
We waited this long just to offer him? Shouldn't we have put feelers out earlier to figure out if he'd take it or not? I figured we were only waiting till now was because he was going to accept. Bad move TW. Hopefully he wasn't dead set on PW and takes it in stride. ZipsFanForever
I have it on good authority that Winters thought he had the job two years ago. TW made it seem like it was his when he interviewed and flew him down to NC for the soccer championship. I feel strongly saying he turned it down largely due to feeling like they played him then. TW's bad decision two years ago comes back to haunt us again

That said, I expect their to be some accountability at the highest levels for what's going on with the most important athletic program at our school, a program into which $70 million has been invested. I believe we're at true breaking point here, and if this gets screwed up yet again, I fear for the future of Akron continuing to compete at this level. That would suck... a lot. Lance1969
Agree we look like a bunch of clowns that just threw a month of recruiting time away, will be interesting when this is finally done if you have any JuCOs left in this class. For the Tressel help maybe this is his revenge for not hiring his guy 2 years ago.
K92
Another day another Tom Wistrcill botch job. Been to Detroit in the last 5 years? Shithole to the nth degree. Akron native, former Zips player and OC would rather stay at a D-II school in the armpit of America than to come home and coach his alma mater. Any more questions? This is the worst job in the country. Fire Wistrcill now

ZachTheZip
The amount of arrogance displayed by Wistrcill is astounding. They freaking drove to Detroit for this. That tells me that they thought it was in the bag. Wistrcill once again had the attitude of "I have this one guy who I want to hire and we don't need to even look at anybody else". Last time that got us Ianello, and this time it backfired on him thanks in part to last time. We could have had a complete staff assembled by now if we were actually looking for other candidates because we could have hired someone weeks ago. Narduzzi backed out because he was told that the AD had his guy. Well guess what, "his guy" hates his guts.
