Big Zip
So does anyone know what kind of offense Terry was running at Norhtern Alabama? I make a quick look for references to it, but didn't come across anything....may have been looking in the wrong places. Wondering if any of the QBs on our roster will be the starter next year.....I wonder if this gets D'Orazio on equal footing to begin with Moore and Nicely? We'll definitely find out if we have a QB problem or a coaching problem.

g-mann17
I notice that they zone block, which would be good for us. Less for the linemen to remember.
GP1
Good topic Big Zip. Of all the coaches we could have hired, tb probably knows more about Moore than any of them. A LOT more. Moore is from Mississippi. For those of you who haven't looked at a map in a few years, MS is next to Alabama. TB loves JUCO players so he probably took a close look at Moore and knows his potential. From all we have heard, Moore was a good spread offense player. Moore comes to Akron and between the pro offense and the bad coaching, we saw the results. Is the player bad or is the coaching bad? I think it was a lot more than that. Good players with bad coaches lose. Once losing starts, confidence and momentum is lost. Once confidence and momentum is lost....well, we saw the results. Combine that with a bad coach and we get a 1-11 season. Also, Moore is a southern kid. TB will be able to relate to him in a way that a guy from New York like Coach I couldn't. It is going to be fun to watch Bowden in press conferences. Southern coaches don't just sound different when they talk, they say different things. They are funny and refreshing. Of the three current QBs, Moore has the best shot at starting when Bowden brings the spread offense to town. I think Bowden can help him turn the page. If Bowden brings in a JUCO QB, all three of them had better hope Santa brings them some luggage this Christmas.
Big Zip
D'Orazio ran a similar offense to the spread in HS too....I woudl still love to see him at Safety. He played both ways in HS, as well as punted...I hope he moves to the defensive side because he can play there for four years. He was gray shirted and then red shirted.....this will be his freshman season. I believe Nicely ran a spread offense in HS too....if we move to a more spread like offense this could be very interesting.
GP1
I wonder how much Moore being on the team influenced tb's decision.?.? Did tb take the job, in part, because he believed he had a QB he could work with? Lots of questions to be answered down the road. It's going to be fun to watch unfold. If he can win the QB competition, great. IF not, kid can be a great safety. Put him back there, move Rossi to LB and hopefully hold onto Wagner and the defense gets better in a hurry. D'Orazio and Rossi are like Wagner= they are, pure and simple, football players! Nicely did run the spread at Willoughby South, and he ran it well. I wouldn't count him out. johnnyzip84
I also believe #44, assuming he stays and has gotten over his mid-season penchant for avoiding contact, could really shine in T-Bow's spread. Although I think a few other backs will contribute.

Did tb take the job, in part, because he believed he had a QB he could work with? Lots of questions to be answered down the road. It's going to be fun to watch unfold. Is this Zach, or GP1? Having a crappy QB from Mississippi on our roster had absolutely nothing to do with Bowden's decision to take the UA job. If it did...than what's Bowden's buyout cost? We should get rid of him immediately. I look for Bowden to be hunting for a premier QB as I type this post. One that can see over his offensive line, and who can throw the ball 40+ yards and hit a target.

I look for Bowden to be hunting for a premier QB as I type this post. One that can see over his offensive line, and who can throw the ball 40+ yards and hit a target. I'd look for another too. However, if they don't get one, a decision has to be made and someone has to play QB. If some of the parts change, then the QB might get better. A properly coached and called spread offense takes a lot of kids, with limited talent, and makes them good. We didn't have anyone who knew how to call the plays or coach the kids on staff for this type of offense. Here is our current QB situation and the reason why we need one from the outside. 1. Moore: Didn't show much last year. 1-11 as starter. Hard to get the 1-11 stink off of someone. Could be good in a spread. Too many years ahead of him to spend the time to see if he gets good. Keep him in case we need him. 2. Nicely: Won 4 games in two seasons as starter. Benchwarmer last year. Don't waste a year on this guy. Give him his walking papers and his Christmas gift from Santa (see above). 3. D'Orazio: Hasn't played in a game in what will be 3 years. Hasn't sniffed the field in any capacity. Good safety?... Why wasn't he on the field last year? On a talentless team, the guy couldn't get on the field. My guess is there isn't as much to this kid as eveyone on this board seems to think...maybe there is. Lots of guys look good at Division V high schools. See what he can do on defense.
Big Zip
D'Orazio was recruited as a QB and wanted to play QB. He was recruited as a safety but didn't want to play that which is why came to Akron. Hopefully he moves to safety.

Alexander probably was the best overall back at the end of the year, but only because Chisholm developed a strong case of "don't hit me" along the way. Jawon didn't run like that early in the season though. I have to wonder how the heavy workload and subsequent nagging injuries played a part in his later reluctance to risk contact. Still there's no question in my mind who has a bigger upside. Breakaway speed like that is hard to find. I like your suggestion of moving Alexander to LB. Dave in Green
Being only 6-feet tall is a huge handicap for an FBS QB, especially one named Moore. Moore has a hard time seeing over the line, and it has obviously affected his passing and winning percentage in college. In his last college game, the 6-foot Moore led Boise State to a 56-24 win over Arizona State in last night's Maaco Bowl to become the first FBS QB ever to win 50 games in a college career. But he also had 3 losses in that 4-year career. Imagine how much Moore could have improved on that 50-3 record if he'd only been tall enough to see over the line. Imagine how some Zips fans might have reacted to Kellen Moore's height had he been recruited by UA.

However, if Bowden doesn't bring in one of his own recruits to be QB, it will be interesting to see how he does in a spread offense with a staff who knows how to run it and coach it. If he becomes more comfortable in an offense suited for his size and style, maybe the accuracy improves. Maybe they can utilize his running ability more. Maybe he'll continue to get balls batted down...who knows? A lot of things can happen. First things first though. We got rid of a pro style coach and brought in a spread coach. Good things will happen starting there.

Clayton Moore is a lousy QB. People can want him to be a good QB as much as they want Wistercill to be a good AD, but at the end of the day, you want it to be one way, but it's the other. Clayton Moore had more balls swatted back in his face in 2011 than Terry Pluto's favorite all-male gang bang porn. Is there a statistics specialist on ZN.o that can summon his stats from 2011? I bet they are pretty telling. Amazing that anyone can compare Kellen Moore to Clayton Moore. Why not throw Mary Tyler Moore in the fray too? ZipRoo
I can't tell you the number of times I turned to my friends in the suite and said: "This guy would never have played at Mississippi State. He's not a D-1 quarterback." Like CK said, the swatted balls, the fumbles, the errant throws, the constant inability to escape the rush or make any sort of play... Coaching staff aside, the on-field problems certainly began with our horrific quarterback play each of the past two years. It spoke volumes about a coach's worthlessness that he was unable to 'coach up' either of those two "allegedly" good recruits into even a respectable performance, week in and week out.
