LZIp
I can't tell you the number of times I turned to my friends in the suite and said: "This guy would never have played at Mississippi State. He's not a D-1 quarterback." Like CK said, the swatted balls, the fumbles, the errant throws, the constant inability to escape the rush or make any sort of play... Coaching staff aside, the on-field problems certainly began with our horrific quarterback play each of the past two years. It spoke volumes about a coach's worthlessness that he was unable to 'coach up' either of those two "allegedly" good recruits into even a respectable performance, week in and week out. says the guy who thinks D2 teams can beat D1 teams. Stick to watching your games in your suite, leave the football evaluating to the rest of us.
Lee Adams
Being only 6-feet tall is a huge handicap for an FBS QB, especially one named Moore. Moore has a hard time seeing over the line, and it has obviously affected his passing and winning percentage in college. In his last college game, the 6-foot Moore led Boise State to a 56-24 win over Arizona State in last night's Maaco Bowl to become the first FBS QB ever to win 50 games in a college career. But he also had 3 losses in that 4-year career. Imagine how much Moore could have improved on that 50-3 record if he'd only been tall enough to see over the line. Imagine how some Zips fans might have reacted to Kellen Moore's height had he been recruited by UA. While true about Kellen Moore, he also came in and did outstanding things as a freshman. He clearly had Moore to work with. Unfortunately for Akron, we've done less with Moore. OUCH!
johnnyzip84
News-Herald Story on Nicely We all know what skip-zip will say, but I wouldn't rule out PN7 completely. The 2010 game at Indiana always sticks in my mind. It was the only game I recall under Ianello where the gameplan was to come out firing. IMO PN7 needs to establish a rhythm to have a chance at success. He did that night in Bloomington (fun game to witness BTW) and it's no coincidence that he probably had his best game as a result. If Coach Bowden throws it as much as we think, this could play in PN7's hand. Of course, if they bring in another JUCO QB, the new guy will probably be the favorite to start. GJGood
I have mentioned similar sentiments about D'Orazio in other posts. If he can win the QB competition, great. IF not, kid can be a great safety. Put him back there, move Rossi to LB and hopefully hold onto Wagner and the defense gets better in a hurry. D'Orazio and Rossi are like Wagner= they are, pure and simple, football players! Nicely did run the spread at Willoughby South, and he ran it well. I wouldn't count him out. I agree on Nicely. I thought he actually looked like a much better and much more comfortable QB the few times he was in more of a shotgun/ multiple spread receiver alignment. Not saying he is going to be a great QB if he plays under TB, just that this new style of offense will probably suit him better than any other system he has seen with the Zips. Not saying he is going to be a great QB if he plays under TB, just that this new style of offense will probably suit him better than any other system he has seen with the Zips. I think the bigger issue with Nicely succeeding, if anyone "in the know" here is right, is that he doesn't command the huddle. Perhaps a guy like Bowden can help his confidence and get him going in the right direction. I have not watched the youtube videos of Bowden's O yet, but I will say this (if QBs remain the same next year): If the QB is not going to be asked to run much, I think Nicely very well could be the starter. If it is more of a mix, than I think it becomes a battle between Moore and D'Orazio. Not sure how much film Bowden will watch from last couple years on Nicely and Moore. He might be the type of coach that doesn't bother with that and makes his opinions based solely on what he sees in HIS offense in the Spring and Fall. I think there is little doubt that in today's college football, it is harder to find a QB for a mostly under center/pro-style offense because SO MANY HIGH SCHOOLS use the spread and/or shotgun almost exclusively it seems. So getting these 2 guys back into an offense they are probably more familiar with will prove beneficial. Perhaps not MONUMENTALLY beneficial, but it will be better. mes102
Do we still have film from Brookhart's last season? If so, wouldn't it be beneficial for Coach Bowden to see how Nicely did in the games his freshmen year. To be honest, I think that many posters on here, had higher expectations for Nicely in his sophomore year, because how he played in MAC play his freshmen year. Then a different system entirely from what Nicely was used to freshmen year with Brookhart, and before he was at Willoughby South. I wouldn't rule out any of the three quite yet...but wouldn't surprise me if one of the three are gone by the spring game...

zen
I am 6 foot tall. I can't throw a 40 yard pass, nor is my last name Moore. I can't play D-1 QB. Clayton Moore is a lousy QB. People can want him to be a good QB as much as they want Wistercill to be a good AD, but at the end of the day, you want it to be one way, but it's the other. Clayton Moore had more balls swatted back in his face in 2011 than Terry Pluto's favorite all-male gang bang porn. Is there a statistics specialist on ZN.o that can summon his stats from 2011? I bet they are pretty telling. Amazing that anyone can compare Kellen Moore to Clayton Moore. Why not throw Mary Tyler Moore in the fray too? How about Mandy Moore? She's 5'10!!!! skip-zip
2. Nicely: Won 4 games in two seasons as starter. Benchwarmer last year. Don't waste a year on this guy. Give him his walking papers and his Christmas gift from Santa (see above). We have already wasted a lot more than that on him already, unfortunately. Even if he shows any signs between now and September that he has anything whatsoever to offer than what we've seen before, what coach trying to build a program will start a QB who is down to the last dozen games of his career? And since he'll certainly be trying to move the program forward, a Sr. QB sitting on the bench is just a wasted roster spot.
GP1
If so, wouldn't it be beneficial for Coach Bowden to see how Nicely did in the games his freshmen year. If I was TB, I wouldn't care less how someone did in another offense. I'd care more about how they do this spring in his offense when they get a chance to show what they can do. ZachTheZip
We've got some talent coming in at the QB position, and some talented QBs that are already on the roster. With the change to Bowden's new offense, who knows which QB will be the best fit? Nicely and Moore were playing in the wrong scheme the past two years. Zach D'Orazio and Kyle Pohl both redshirted but have a lot of potential. Tyrell Goodman is still coming in after spending a year at a prep school. And then there's recruit Steve Franco coming in from PA who might be the best of them all. Coach Bowden has some really good players to pick from. ZachTheZip
Can you provide confirmation of Goodman's status? He's always been a VERY intriguing prospect to me. He should be on campus for the spring semester beginning next week. I guess he had trouble with the NCAA clearinghouse that prevented him from enrolling and joining the team in the fall, but he got it sorted out. So we should get a look at him at spring practices. Captain Kangaroo
Since the thread title is "Offense/QB" I can officially wonder what Rossi's role will be with the new scheme. UNA appears to use single-back sets, which doesn't bode well for a fullback looking for touches. We need LB's B-A-D. If Chisholm proves he's back to what we saw the first 2/3's of last season, I'd have to imagine Rossi and Alexander would help our cause MUCH more at LB than in the offensive backfield. If Chisholm isn't the guy we saw the 1st 2/3's of last season, then give Alexander the rock. I would love to see what he could do with 20 carries/game. Many, many, many plays with three backs.... I posted a topic earlier this week with links to some highlight videos. Coach TB runs the OK St/WVU offense - almost to the "T". I posted a topic earlier this week with links to some highlight videos. Coach TB runs the OK St/WVU offense - almost to the "T". But sticking with CK's point, the size of the backs I've seen in these 3 back sets are generally not what you see in a traditional fullback (like Rossi). I really like the idea of switching Rossi to linebacker, the position for which he garnered offers from Temple and WVU. I might wait and see with Alexander since we'll likely need a lot of depth at RB. Tyler Williams would probably be either a RB in the 3 back sets or a slot WR in the 4 and 5 wide sets.
