I think of Joe Akron as any Summit County resident (or greater Akron area resident - I live in Stark) who is a sports fan, especially a college sports fan, but who has never been interested in the hometown U.

Together, CK and B&G nailed it!

Joe Akron has no local pride or interest whatsoever and even goes out of his way from discouraging those around him to have any as well. In many cases, he is a Scarlet and Grey zombie yet has never attended the institution that is south on I-71.

Joe Akron will/may become a Zips fan and possibly a ZNO member if inspired by one of the following:

1.) A personal connection to the University Community (Alumni, parent, friend)

2.) Having their inner sports fan engaged by on the field/court/pitch performance

3.) Feeling like the University Community is open to new members w/o affiliation beyond proximity (merging the values presented in marketing with those of the local community AKA giving the program a local flavor)

4.) Consciousness of the value of supporting local programs (outsourced inspiration and convenience)

I'm not a UA alumnus. Just a lifelong area resident.

I am Joe Akron and will not pay to watch crap.....Terry Bowden has got me pumped though IMO

Then he would finish with, "If they give away free tickets at Acme, I'll try to get over my grudge about Dennison getting fired even though I never saw one of his teams play and go to a game...as long as the parking is free.

A couple of times I thought of starting a poll to see what majority the ZN posters were, alumni, area resident...

Good idea! Maybe throw in ex-Zip athlete as another category (even if it overlaps with alumnus)? Relative of Zip athlete?

I'll be alumni in June. Technically that makes me a tweener.

Do it up, Dr. Z. You have honors on this idea. I am fascinated to see what the results are. I would be interested to know what other schools fellow alumni have attended as well. Pitt and CMU here though my loyalty lies with UA!
