UAZip0510
We've done just fine without them. +1. The accomplishments of this program have everything to do with Keith Dambrot, his coaching staff, and our players, and nothing to do with LBJ. zippy5
I remember when LeBron James said he would have gone to Ohio State had he gone to college. I remember looking at this link and realizing our partnership with Nike didn't have much to do with LeBron, considering Ball State is a Nike school as well (and Adidas was/is an option for sponsorship). I remember reading the news a few weeks back that he was moving his summer camp "temporarily" to Las Vegas (sorry guys, it's not coming back here). I remember zero recruits signing with Akron that listed LBJ's small connection to the school as a reason for why they came. I remember the number of times the "big fish donor" has given money to our university because unless I'm mistaken, it has happened zero times. I remember LeBron being at zero Zips home games since Travis and Joyce graduated. I remember "The Decision" being one of the most egotistical, narcissistic moves ever made by a professional athlete. Finally, I remember both of the last two NCAA Tournament appearances where the hard work of our players and our coaching staff was overlooked because of a perceived connection to LeBron James. Listen, I appreciate that he has donated bikes and money to different charities. You certainly can't fault him for that. But I also think it's silly to say a person doesn't have self-respect if they don't bow down to the self-proclaimed King. He's a selfish, egotistical person who uses our facilities at times during the summer and tweets about UA on occasion ("Every chance he gets" is a stretch). But let's be clear - he hasn't delivered us recruits and he hasn't donated money to the school...his overall impact on this program has been minimal at best. You are free to support him if you'd like, and I can certainly respect that...but let's stop acting like there is something wrong with a person if they don't like LBJ. He was at either the Can't or VCU game in 08. Forget which one. Also at the info opener.
UAZip0510
Cleveland expects for people from Akron to cheer for their sports, Ohio State expects people from Akron to cheer for their sports. Cannondale and others donate all of the equipment that has ever been given away by his bikes for kids thing. He is a man-child jerk off who happened to grow up in Akron. Hey people from Akron, when your city is best known as being the place where LeDouche is from, your city ain't much to write home about. Even when he was with the Cavs and things were going well, I was always uncomfortable with the big deal that was made about him being from Akron, including those idiotic city signs that said "Akron, home of LeBron James". We'll see if the man-child ever gets back to Akron to do anything worthy of all of the attention, but he's not a positive factor for the city or the university at this point in time and should be ignored until he grows up a little. While I'm venting, the whole "I hate Cleveland" thing is idiotic. Akron benefits from being so close to Cleveland in a thousand ways. Clevelanders may think of Akron as the smaller town to the south, and it is the smaller town to the south. Infrastructurally and culturally both are unbreakably intertwined and they are the major anchors that make up "Northeast Ohio." Also, both are down economically and if the NE Ohio region is to survive and prosper at some point, it will be at least in part because of synergy between all of communities that it comprises. Akron is not a stand alone entity and it would be moribund if it were.

NE Ohio fans choosing to root for a college team 2.5 hours south when there are three solid local programs in the area has no comparison to me rooting for a pro team that is located 30 minutes up the highway when the next nearest pro team is several hours away. Apples and Oranges to say the least.
skip-zip
Why are some people even questioning whether LeBron likes the Zips? It's obvious. Have some of you forgotten the game at Ken+ that he attended a couple of years ago, where the Ken+ fans hated on him as he jumped up and down for the Zips? And then ran into the Zips locker room after the game to celebrate with them? Short memories? Or, just blind denial? What do some of you expect him to wear to a game in Cowlumbus? He was at their game. Is it a big surprise that he wore their hat? He Tweets about the Zips, congratulates them on wins, talks about working out with their team and hanging out with thier coach, etc., and MILLIONS of people see it. We can't buy that kind of publicity. Ever.

Dr Z
It's interesting that Akron is on this list , while Cleveland is not.I was read an article in Cleveland Magazine about two years ago. The gist of the article was that Pittsburgh banks (as opossed to CLE) recognized the mortgage problem quicker than anybody and were in less trouble than most cities during the recession. They predicted a quicker future growth. Guess they were right (according to JZ link).
Valpo Zip
Love or hate Lebron is a debatable issue and one can argue both ways so I am not going to get into it. Hating on Cleveland Pro teams because we are in Akron is just plain non-sense. I don't understand it at all...is it because the zips will ever play the Cavs? or maybe because we compete for coaches/recruits? What is the deal? Saying that this is Akron and we shouldn't root for the CAVS/indians/Browns is just like saying that the people from Green, Fairlawan, stow etc... should not support the zips because they should support their local high school teams. Akron1
Sports are popular because it allows people to show support within their community or the area that they live/lived. When you graduate from a college, most will forever be attached to that school or team. I live in Akron and take great pride in my hometown, Cleveland and the State of Ohio. I am probably loyal to a fault with my teams, but I would rather support and root for the Cleveland teams than to be a front runner. Think how much more fun and positive attention it is for this area with hoops succeeding at Cleveland St., Can't State and Akron. A strong Northeast Ohio benefits The U of A on so many levels. Go Zips, Browns, Indians and Cavs. And if Lebron decides to come back I'll forgive and forget. This was supposed to be a topic about possible national exposure for the Zips if Lebron and Wade showed up and how fans would react.
