Well the Akron Aeros Are Going to Tick A Lot of You Off...

Recommended Posts

Thanks for posting this. What a punch to the gut to everyone associated with the major University that's literally right next door !!! But, I'm sure all of the Akron-area OSWho bandwagoners are loving this idea. And some of them will show up. They are like programmed robots.

This type of event is actually a great idea, in theory. But, why not launch Akron fireworks in Akron colors and show some local support for their local, major University?

Again, it's part of the pompous and incorrect assumption that everyone must be OSWho fans because we live in Ohio. Do you think a ballpark in Cincinnati, or even Dayton or Toledo would host an OSWho Night ? And what would the reaction be like ?

I can never say this often enough. This is another opportunity for us to voice our pride. Nothing is going to change until people hear that the Zips faithful here in Akron do not care to see such attention being given to a competing University that's 150 miles away, right under our noses.

this makes me want to make a "Boycott Akron Aeros for Their Disrespect of UA" page on facebook.

What if the local leader of the OSU Alumni Association called the Aeros and orgainzed this event? Something tells me directing anger at the Aeros or the OSU AA might be misplaced.

As far as the sandwich board, I think it is a great idea. If we are going to pay Tressel $200K per year, let's get some production out of him.

The consequence of taking money from OSU to sponsor such an event in Akron should be negative. We can not let them have their cake and eat it.

Event is created, have fun. http://www.facebook.com/FUAkronAeros

I'll be SHOCKED if that's the case. I'd guess that someone was just coming up with ideas to generate ticket sales, and thought that some kind of Ohio State Pride night was a good idea.

The Aeros have a proactive marketing department. My wife and I own a small business, and received a cold call last year from the Aeros asking if we'd be interested in being involved in a game day theme related to our area of business. While the concept sounded as if it might be good for us, the call came less than two weeks before the game date. Since that would not have given us time to properly execute a marketing plan for our business, we declined and told them we'd consider in the future if there was more advance notice.

As sad and disrespectful that is, the Aeros are not the cause of the problem, they are the syndromes.

The Aeros doesn't give a damn who's local and who's not, they will do whatever puts butts in the seats. The best reaction to this insult would be, ideally, for Akron fans to wear blue and gold on Aug 18 and outnumber the scarlett and gray to deliver a message. But we all know that this will never happen because if we plan it, a total of 15-20 people will wear blue and gold and go unnoticed.

The second best thing is for a lot of people to contact the aeros on the link above and respectfully ask for a zips day.

How many people would go if it was a UA night? Probably a lot less than OSU night. Their job is to get butts in seats.

Exactly. I hate OSU, but have no hard feelings towards the Aeros. They're running a business. This makes a lot of business sense for them.

This is not a big deal. Let it go. Soon enough Canal Park will be the Zips home field. We play most of our games there as it is.

The stadium itself is owned by the city, not by the Aeros. The Aeros are just trying to pay their rent. Once we move in, we can hang Zips banners in there to get some advertising.

Saturday, August 18th - "OH-IO State Fireworks Night - Wear Your Scarlet and Gray!"

Ohio State night...in Akron. :puke:

Oh boy...

They did say on their Facebook page (posted February 9th) that they were going to have a bobblehead of a "Famous Akronite", but didn't say who.

You can contact them here.

You are all missing nickelanddime's point. If this works well for the Aeros, we should try the same thing for at least one of our football and basketball games.

Come watch the Zips and enjoy OH-IO State Fireworks Night - Wear Your Scarlet and Gray!

How do we know how many Buckeye honks will show up either? Just because they are inviting people to come to a baseball game wearing Red and Silver, and its not even one of their own sporting events?

Akron has 30,000 students right down the street, plus faculty and staff. If it was announced properly at the U, I bet you'd be surprised how many people would show up. I go to Canal Park once in a blue moon. But, I'd go for that event.

I don't think a boycott is the way to go, but I do think it would be nice to e-mail them and voice support for UA-themed events. When they were asking for opinions on who to make the "Akron-themed" bobblehead of, Keith Dambrot and Caleb Porter were both mentioned by more than a few people. I think it'd go a long way to e-mail them and push for one of these two, to make that our "UA Night", and to prove that UA fans, students, alumni will support UA-related promotions in the future.

Please, take a few minutes and contact them here.

I know the guy who was President of the OSU AA in Charlotte. Every summer, he had an event at a Charlotte Knights game (White Sox AAA). All it takes is one phone call to the team and they basically set it up. All he had to do was contact everyone on his list by e-mail. It hardly takes any time.

I'd love to captain a Charlotte UofA alumni group. I know four families from my little town who are UofA grads. With a little assistance from the University in the form of e-mail lists, I bet I could have 20-30 UofA alumni at an event at a Knights game this summer.

I think this would be a great idea everywhere. We need to get the out-of-town alums to band together. And an even better place to gather would be at a Zips road contest in your area.

But I'll still be surprised if an event like the one we've been discussing was OSU initiated. I'd surely bet that it was a simple, internal, patronizing promotion. I'm just angry as heck that they can't do something like this for the huge University that's right next door.

I think someone should champion the cause to start a nationwide fan club with chapters all over the place, something akin to the Browns Backers. We can call ourselves the Zips Zealots. GP1, get it going...I volunteer to do whatever I can for the Ashland/Wayne County chapter. :)

I would like to do the same thing for the University of Michigan alumni in the Akron area at an Aeros game on August 18th. If somebody has that email list, please forward it to me.
