Porter to Portland?

Recommended Posts

I'm disappointed, but he has given seven great years to a University to which he had no official ties and he didn't leave for another school, he left for a job in the pros. Can't be unhappy with any of this and good luck to him. The good thing about this timing is that it allows a search to start right now, so recruits may still know who they are going to be playing for soon. If this had all waited until December, it would have really put a crimp in all that. Caleb is a class act and maybe he recognized that as well which is why he is staying through the end of the season. The first person I'd have on the search committee is Caleb Porter.

I agree. I hope UA listens to Caleb's recommendation(s); he's been so great to Akron that I can't imagine he wouldn't want to try to leave us in the best possible situation.

I hope one day we'll see Caleb helping the USMNT win a World Cup.

According to George's twitter, Porter won't even comment on it.

Not exactly correct:

On Portland's website: “I am truly excited and honored to be provided this unique opportunity to coach the Portland Timbers, an organization that in a short-time has established itself as a model franchise in Major League Soccer,” said Porter. “I know that Merritt and Gavin are committed to long-term success for the Timbers and come December, I will be completely focused and driven to continue building a professional club in which the Timbers supporters, city and organization will be proud of. In the meantime, out of respect to the Akron program, I will not be commenting further on this matter until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season.”

On GoZips:

"I always believed that it would take a truly special situation for me to leave Akron, and the Portland Timbers position is that type of opportunity," said Porter. "Given how invested I have been in the Akron program and community for the past seven years, this has been an extremely difficult decision. However, after many conversations with my family and close advisors and, given my long-term aspirations, I feel this is the right time and place for me to take the next step in my coaching career.

"In making this announcement, everyone should know that my role with Akron during this college season will not change, nor will my commitment to the players, alumni and supporters. I am extremely proud to continue coaching my team through the fall and the Akron soccer program will have my undivided focus for what I hope will be another championship year. Out of respect to my players and this program, I will not be commenting further about this situation until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season."

I seriously wonder if anyone edits copy at the ABJ any more. Here's the headline on Ohio.com:

Caleb Porter staying through season’s end, then will leave for Portland Timbers

I worked in newspapers for several years and grew up in the business through family connections. I would have been laughed out of the newsroom with this headline, which delivers the NEWS as the secondary message.

I can only assume the same writer's headline and lede on Nov. 22, 1963, would have been:

"Kennedy motorcade redirected; president shot in head"

No wonder this writer has been reassigned so many times.

Hats off. Most of us love a happy ending in sports. In coaching, this is a happy ending for a guy who worked hard and moved himself to the top of his field (college coaching). Now it is time for him to branch out and see if he can do the same thing elsewhere. I'd say "job well done", but he has this year and then we can all say "job well done".

Is this an example of "burying the lead?" Or is that something else?

Before Caleb leaves after the season, I hope I get to shake his hand and say thank you for all he's done for this university and community.

As I was listening to "Big Head, Red Head" with Taylor Twellman and Alexi Lalas, they mentioned that he would be given two-three years to turn it around in Portland. If not, he's gone. And then, he will always have college soccer to go back to.

In that case, if that would happen theoretically, would we move on from him, or would we take him back?

Journalism is dying...that's for sure.

Just remembered, and surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but former Zip Cameron Knowles is still an assistant coach with the Timbers. He played for Akron before Porter came here though so I don't know what, if any, relationship exists between them. Still neat to think about two former Akron guys on the same coaching staff.

Interesting.

Would Knowles remain on Porter's staff?

Kudos to all of the Rowdies quoted in this article...http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/marla...uccess-1.334782

Caleb Porter has been awesome for Akron and very much deserves this kind of support. :thumb::bow:

Did anyone watch the Seattle - Portland match last night on ESPN? Seattle thrashed Portland 3-0 in front of a sold out crowd at Century Link Field. During the game, Travis Clark tweeted "Caleb Porter has his work cut out for him," and boy is he right. That team is not very good and does not even have a lot of good pieces. Watching Donovan Ricketts last night, I wasn't sure why bringing him to Portland even happened. Maybe at this point Porter is just banking on some good draft picks for next year, but really it seems like the whole team needs overhauled. Apparently Alexi Lalas also heard from Porter as he tweeted "Caleb Porter told me today, “#SEAvPOR is important to win Cascadia Cup but also sets the stage for the future. Moving forward we will no longer be inferior to the Sounders.” - Caleb Porter #SEAvPOR" and "Caleb Porter also told me Timbers supporters "deserve a club that is line with their passion." #SEAvPOR." As usual, big talk from Porter. Hopefully for the sake of him and the club though, he can deliver.
