Game 1 - UCF at Akron

How did you like the one comment to the article by Coach Hater?

It's a shame Hitt didn't have the stones to fire that drunken lout, O'Leary over the recruiting scandal and hire Terry Bowden for our coach. Now there's a man with skills, personality and ties to the Florida football community. What a buzz that would make. Instead, we're stuck with this mediocre coach and his BS resume. He coaches about as well as he lies...

I'll mark him down as undecided.

Ya know this game is weird to me. UCF is on probation. No post season if I am not mistaken. O'Leary has probably worn out his welcome down there. No doubt UCF has a lot more talent than the Zips. Depending on how the UCF kids respond and how long Akron can stay in the game, could be a UCF blowout or a lot closer than most might think.

Might be to Akron's advantage for Fleming to be on the other sideline.

Interesting coaching matchup. O'Leary the plodder v TB the gunslinger.

Hanging in is the key. Especially in early season games a team is expected to lose.

Why? Teams dont like to show much in early season games they should win easily because it ends up on film. So, they end up having a close game against a team they should easily beat. They sort of figure they will get around to beating them by the end of the game. Then it comes down to less than handful of plays. Perfect example....Michigan losing to App State a few years ago. Michigan did almost everything they needed to do to win that game. It was close, but they drove down for an easy fieldgoal to win the game and it got blocked. One of the handful of plays in a close game lost it for them. This is how we need to look at a UCF upset. The Zips have to hope for a flat ucf, keep it close and hope they poop their pants in the end. It can happen.

BTW, I saw where Michigan is trying to schedule App State again. My guess is they want to run the score up on them. I would.

I was in Detroit on business last week and caught a radio interview with a member of the Michigan defense that lost that game. He said that virtually the entire starting defense decided to get as high as possible the night before the Appy game to prove that they could beat an FCS team even when high. Said several players were still doing bong hits at 6 a.m. of game day. Guess it didn't work out so well for them.

Sounds like a poor excuse for a guy who was on the wrong end of the worst upset in college football history.

Here is an interview with Coach Resume Padder.

One quote really stands out, and I hope he's asking himself this question all the way home :D

I don't know why we're going up to Akron to be honest with you. I think it should be a home game. But it wasn't.

There is also confirmation that Blake Bortles will start at QB for the Knights (so much for the link that mentioned Tyler Gabbert as the starter).

Regarding the 23 ½ point spread, I did a little research over lunch. Now I’m fully aware that the 2012 Zips are a different team in a very different situation. But ponder this for a second. Terry Bowden’s Auburn teams were only defeated by more than 23 points TWICE out of 65 total games over his tenure on the Plains. His North Alabama teams were only defeated ONCE (last year’s quarterfinal D-2 playoff loss to Delta St) by more than 23 points during his stay in Florence. It’s something to consider.

JZ, your scenario makes me want to ask coach Bowden, "if your Auburn team was a talent level nine on a scale of one to ten, and your N. Alabama team was a four, where do you rank our current Zips team?" Normally I would say this question is a waste of time, but I think you would get an honest answer from TB.

It would be interesting to get his take NOW and after few games into the season as well.

If you had to imagine how the game is going to play out...what would be our strengths? and where will the Zips struggle? Based on what I've personally seen of the team we will be able to move the ball outside of the redzone and control to some degree possession. I think our running game will be pretty solid. Special teams will be 10 fold better than last year.

The places we will really need to step up will definitely include the redzone. Our offense has not done a very good job getting in once they clear the 25. It would be a shame to be kicking field goals all night. We will be there. Also I think we are going to have difficulties especially late in the game on both o and d lines due to lack of depth. Conditioning will really be key. For some reason I think we are going to have some turnovers INTs have been happening all through camp and Jawon has coughed it up a few times sooo....I hope we really limit our mistakes.

They will have to play almost flawlessly to still be in the game come 4th quarter.

What do you guys think?

Your assessment is pretty close to the way I see it as well, as noted in my game prediction post. I’m also a little concerned about the speed of the UCF defense causing holding penalties by our O-Line. Hopefully Dalton will not be forced to hold the ball long too many times, making it harder to avoid this likelihood. You’re definitely right that we can’t expect to compete if we turn it over and make things easier for them.

The forecast looks absolutely perfect for tomorrow! If we see some goodness, I’ll be perfectly content. Go Zips!!
