New 2013 commit: BJ Gladden

Recommended Posts

2013 Charlotte (Olympic) 6'5 wing BJ Gladden committed to Akron this morning, per his high school coach.

Congrats to the Zips! He's a solid get and I know the Rams looked hard at him and offered at one point in his recruitment. He also has had a number of high major offers over the course of his recruitment. He's a very solid addition for Akron.

(lists a Tennessee offer)

Rivals: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/re...-Gladden-120705

(offers from Wake Forest, Xavier, VCU, Charlotte, Winthrop, ECU, UNCW, UNCG)

(offers from Tennessee, Charlotte, VCU, Wake Forest, Xavier, and Wyoming)

KD is bringing in some good talent and the future looks bright up there.

Thanks for the inside scope DB! I was wondering if you went into hiding since the Lady soccer Zips took down VCU last month but it's good to have you back  .

What? lol I don't follow women's soccer at all. Or men's soccer for that matter. I'm really just a basketball nut, always have been, always will be.

I understand Akron has a beast men's program in soccer. That's pretty cool. I think our men's coach was an assistant at Akron before coming to VCU. Neat connection.

Anyway, Gladden looks like a nice add for the Zips and should be a player in the MAC. It's also a nice indication that Akron's success is paying dividends with a farther geographical reach going into Charlotte, NC for a well-regarded recruit.

Word out of the JAR is that BJ Gladden will remind Zips fans of an old nemesis -- Chris Singletary. That is, when he gets the ball and heads for the basket, he's virtually unstoppable and draws a lot of fouls while crushing defenders. Unlike Singletary, he gets the job done on both offense and defense without using sucker punches and other dirty tactics. Back-to-back commits by a high-major center (Pat Forsythe) and a small forward being offered by high major programs is clearly a sign that the Zips basketball program is moving up. The Zips are methodically assembling a group of players worthy of producing high major results.

All this time people have argued that LeBron would deliver us a recruit and he finally did. I just didn't realize they were talking about Mr. Gladden! ;)

If LeBron really had a significant impact on his recruiting I will gladly thank him, but he still gets too much credit for not doing as much for the University as a lot of people think.

As of right now our roster for 2013-14 likely looks something like this:

PGs: Abreu, Betancourt

Wings: Walsh*, Ibitayo, Justice, McAdams, Kretzer, Gladden

Bigs: Harney, Treadwell, Egner, Forsythe

*for Walsh because it is still uncertain if he will get an extra year of eligibility back from earlier in his career.

That leaves us with either 1 or 2 more scholarships depending on Walsh's situation.

If Walsh gets his extra year back I would love to see us use that 1 remaining scholarship on a big. Isaiah Johnson seems to have a lot of interest and I think he would look great in Blue and Gold.

If Walsh is done after this year I would like to see us use the one scholarship on a wing forward type. Aaron Jackson from Gahanna Lincoln would be the most likely possibility there. The other scholarship I would either like to see used on a big (see Johnson) or bringing in another PG who could redshirt and be ready to take over some minutes after Abreu graduates. Jack Gibbs would be an excellent choice. I also think it would be interesting to pair BJ Gladden (LeBron's cousin) up with Elijah Brown (son of former Cavaliers coach Mike Brown).

Before everyone starts praising Lebron on making this commitment happen, let's focus on the correct Lebron. Lebron Gladden is BJ Gladden's uncle, not Lebron James. Lebron Gladden still holds the Ashland record for most points scored in a season at Ashland at 649 (which happened under Dambrot).

I said Mr. Gladden, I know it wasn't the egomaniac in South Beach. :) I think QZ just read it too quickly.

BJ Gladden and SC Raptors Dunks... BJ Gladden has the 1st and last dunk in this video and several in between #51 Raptors

The drive to the lane at the 1:07 mark of the video reminds me of a young CK. Sweet move to the hole...then miss the lay up.:D

Gladden looks like an exciting player. Looking forward to watching his Zips career. After losing Walsh, Gilliam and Diggs, he'll get a lot of PT as a Frosh.
