NIU is ranked 16th in the just-announced USA Today Coaches Poll. Harris Poll is not out yet, but it's not unreasonable to think that NIU might also be 16th there. Computer rankings are the killer. NIU had a ton of ground to make up there to make it to 16th in the BCS standings.

I'm happier about NI representing the MAC than KÉnt after watching the game. I know that Can't was ranked higher before the game, and I was actually rooting for Can't ( :tomato:) to roll, but NI looked like the better team to have a chance to win in a bowl game.

I probably feel better about NIU than Can't, not sure though since NIU's HC is bolting.

Can't actually surprised me Friday night, and would have won the game if the long hair TE didnt fumble the reverse in OT smh.

The talking heads are whining left and right about it. Its all about poor Oklahoma being left out and no one is saying a word about NIU qualifying under the rules the BCS set up. Because Louisville and Wisconsin are so deserving. Would love to see them knock off Florida State.

If somehow NIU is able to upset Florida State it has to go down as the biggest BCS upset of all time.

MAC school, ranked 16th and without a coach?

Wow, 16th in both polls and 19th in the average of 6 computer ratings was enough to move NIU up to 15th in the final BCS standings. That's some magical formula the BCS has conjured up. I'll have to find a good article describing how the system works, because it just didn't seem likely that this could happen to a lot of people who are smarter than me about things like this. Poor Boise State was 15th in both human polls, but stuck down in 31st with the computers.

Who would have imagined that beating Can't could raise your BCS score from .1936 to .3276? Huge leap there. And Can't still finished 25th in the final BCS standings, so the MAC ended up with two teams in the final BCS standings. Great news for the conference.

I fully expected some complaining, but the weeping and gnashing of teeth I just witnessed on display for a national TV audience was pathetic. I'm not arguing that NIU might not be the 15th best team in the country. But for every seemingly minor injustice the teams in the MAC have had to face over the years, the placement of an "unworthy" NIU team in the Orange Bowl does not even begin to balance the ledger. Herbstreit, Pollack and Palmer point to NIU having no signature wins. Where I believe they miss the boat is in the across-the-board improvement seen in the MAC this year. The computers identified this improvement, because they're not swayed by history, tradition, politics, or reputation. NIU did not lose a MAC game this year, something I don't believe Louisville or Wisconsin could have accomplished. In the end, FSU may blow the Huskies out, and all these blow-hards will say their I-told-you-so's. But until then, I'm enjoying this buffet of schadenfreude to the last bite. Go Huskies! Go MAC!!!!

According this Dennis Dodd article, the MAC will get around $13.73M for this game, don't know how that is broken down amongst conference members (NIU should certainly get more) but I really hope it is not proportionally by number of wins. :) Should net Akron somewhere in the $1M range though. UMass sure picked the right time to join the league.

This is Dodd's breakdown from the article, but its cool that the MAC is the highest rated non-BCS league (and I would suspect higher than the Big East as well).

$7 million of the $28.2 million is divided between the five non-BCS conferences (Conference USA, Mountain West, MAC, Sun Belt and WAC).

•Another $7 million is divided into 15 “units” based on conference strength. Because it is the No. 1 ranked non-BCS league, the MAC will receive five of those 15 shares, followed by the No. 2-ranked conference getting four shares, etc.

•The MAC will get $8 million of the remaining $14 million as the participating conference.

•The other $6 million will be split up into those 15 units.

This year's bowl screwing was reserved for a non-MAC team (and I am still shocked that CMU made it), La. Tech went 9-3 and is staying home, although some of it is their fault. Good to see that 6-7 Ga. Tech made it though. Nothing seems wrong with that.

I agree with everything.

What I don't understand is why everyone in the media seems to think NIU is going to go the Orange Bowl and get rolled by FSU? I went to the ACC Championship Saturday and was not all that impressed with FSU. Sort of how I'm not impressed with the ACC in general. It's not that hard to win that league. I'm not arguing NIU is going to win, I'm just saying I think they will put up a good fight against FSU and could win the game.

The last time a team really got rolled in a BCS game was Cincy getting destroyed by an SEC team in Florida. Anyone who couldn't see that one coming from a mile away has vision similar to Mr. Magoo. Cincy was DOA because they simply didn't have the horses. Florida could have scored 70 on them if they wanted. It will not be a match up like that. In fact, it is a match up similar to the Oklahoma vs. Boise State game. If NIU hangs around, they can win the game.

As a side note in the vein of all publicity is good publicity, NIU has dominated the conversation. I do think they have a much better shot than Can't State would have (even though Can't State did have the "signature" win against Rutgers), but they have now been noting all of the MAC wins over BCS teams this year, Mark May (a Pitt grad) pretty much told everyone to stop whining yesterday and Lou Holtz said as a MAC grad this made him very happy. Maybe the tide is shifting the other way now (and I wish someone would point out how many built in advantages the BCS schools have). Now I want to see them talk about that in the last three years the MAC has a National Championship in soccer, a basketball Sweet Sixteen run, a CWS appearance and now a BCS bid. Not so bad. Maybe sticking with the MAC in all of the reshuffling was brilliant. :)

For anyone questioning MD's math, let me just say that $14.4 million is "around" $13.73 million.

Yes but the example you give is quite different than this situation. For example, Cincy got blown out after its coach bolted early for another gig, and .........oh, never mind.
