Zips Hoops Rankings

Zips finally make the CBS Sports Mid-Major Power Pyramid:

13. Akron (19-4). Why it's here: No longer can I deny the team with the nation's longest winning streak -- 15 games -- to be snubbed from the Pyramid. This of course means the Zips will lose this week. Apologies in advance. Something you should know: You'll recall Ohio repped the MAC in the NCAAs last year. But before that, and in 2009, it was Akron. It's tough to go back-to-back in the MAC and to the NCAAs. In fact, since the league split to two divisions, only Can't State's won the league in back-to-back years.

Zips up from #11 to #9 in the latest Bleacher Report Mid-Major Top 25:

Akron struggled in both of its road games last week against Central Michigan and Miami (OH), but the Zips managed to execute down the stretch and get a pair of victories. The Zips hold a one-game lead over Ohio in the MAC East standings, and they will play Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green this week.

Because a comparison of this year's Zips team with the 2011-12 Drexel Dragons took root on another board, let's look at the same portion of the Top 25 poll from Week 18 of the 2011-12 season:

Others receiving votes: Saint Mary's 88, Louisville 84, Drexel 83, New Mexico 64, Virginia 34, Memphis 13, Virginia Commonwealth 6, Vanderbilt 6, Cincinnati 5, Long Beach State 3, Kansas State 2, Harvard 1, Saint Louis 1

If 2011-12 Drexel got that much media respect and no bid, does that predict anything meaningful about this year's Zips? Probably not -- to be true, media polls would have to be meaningful, which they aren't. (Didn't Louisville play in last year's Final Four?) I raise the point because stats and anecdotal facts can be made to say anything one wants them to say. (As a whole, they give some sense of the zeitgeist, but none individually means anything.)

Getting votes in the AP Top 25 is great; I'd certainly rather get them than not. It's just that, at the end of the day, they won't mean much.

So the Zips are effectively 37th in both polls. As long as they keep the winning streak alive, they'll keep getting a few more votes each week as other teams stumble. If the Zips stumble, they'll probably disappear from the polls for the rest of the season. All the polls really accomplish at this point is to put the Zips on the national radar and bring them to the attention of some folks who might have otherwise totally ignored them. The real key is to consistently perform in a way that will keep you in the national spotlight once you've creeped out of the shadowy fringes. EDIT: @Aaron, we think alike! :)

Here's a roundup of 18 "major" polls and how the Zips did in each of them this week:

Props to the writer for some good legwork.

Throw out the high and low poll numbers, and one is left with rankings of 41, 44, 45, 50, 54, 56, 56 and 56. From what I've seen so far, that range seems about right to me.

Just stumbled on a new ranking system that shows the Zips in the top 10 -- the UPS Team Performance Index:

In conjunction with STATS LLC, UPS has created a proprietary algorithm that gauges six major statistics covering the spectrum of a team's on-court performance: effective field-goal percentage, effective field-goal percentage against, rebounding percentage, ball-handling efficiency, miscues and winning percentage. From there, the data is normalized and an overall index is created for all 345 NCAA Division I teams. The scores are not meant to reflect a traditional power poll, per se, but measure a broad range of inside-the-lines excellence and overall balance..

The Zips are #10 in the latest poll, which is mentioned on some of the major sports websites such as SI.com, CBSSports.com, etc. Here's what they have to say about the Zips in their latest release:

Up six spots to 10th, the Zips rank in the top 20 in only one of the index's six categories - winning percentage - but own the longest active winning streak in the nation at 15.

They overcame a nine-point halftime deficit by shooting 56.5 percent in the final 20 minutes to improve to 10-0 in the Mid-American Conference with a 54-50 win at Miami of Ohio on Saturday.

"We just have to be prepared to play 40 minutes every night," Akron junior forward Demetrius Treadwell said. "We can't pick and choose when we play. We have to stop doing that. We are going to get ourselves in trouble one of these games."

Here's a link to the latest news release posted on CBSSports.com, and here's a link to the actual standings.

FWIW, the team with the second longest active winning streak in the nation, Memphis, has moved up to #22 in the AP Top 25 this week. The Tigers currently sit one game behind the Zips with 14 active wins in a row. They too have faced some difficult wins including a 1 point victory over Marshall at home a few weeks ago.

They are ranked 35th in the RPI and 31st in the BPI. They beat OU 84-58 in Memphis on December 15.

Zips move up another notch to #5 in the just released ESPN Mid-Major Power Rankings, moving ahead of Creighton, which dropped to #8 with their 3-game losing streak. The only teams ahead of the Zips now are Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Middle Tennessee State and Belmont.

5.Akron (20-4, 11-0 MAC) – The Zips are still winning. Their 16-game winning streak is the nation’s longest.
