New QB commit - decommit from Arizona?

Recommended Posts

Id hate to see Bowden & Co form a bad relationship with a premiere WPIAL program like McKeesport.

From this? No, more than likely made it better.

Remember you are only allowed so much contact with a recruit, they got the early verbal, they watched Pohl through the year. They told this kid honestly, you're going to come into a situation where we don't have a named starter as of yet, but we have a heavy favorite, so we aren't pulling your scholarship persay, but we won't be offended if you break your verbal.

The kid seems good enough to go to a school and start right away, so they were being as open as they could before the door really closed on him.

Good point. My question is though, what happened to the 1 QB in every class? I know this guy was a QB, but listed at a DB in his profile. To be honest, Im not sure I see his playing style fitting our system.

Woodson is apparently much bigger than the Scout profile suggests. I still have family back in Western Pa and it's no secret that McKeesport was disappointing on the football field this season. That's not all on Eddie for sure, since there were a lot of new recievers and linemen for the Tigers this year. But Woodson's stats were MUCH better than Eddie's in 2012. The Tigers barely threw it at all by season's end.

I'd expect that considering McKeesport runs the triple option (unless that has changed recently). Dont know what offense Gateway runs. To me, and by his profile description, I'd say Woodson is indeed a guy for Rich Rod's system, which would explain them recruiting him.

They were supposed to be implementing a form of the spread this year (not sure it it was run-spread or pass-spread). But it looks like they clearly went back to a run first mentality after the first few games. Stockett passed for THREE TIMES as many yards in 2011.

Thanks for the info. Appears the more I learn, the more Stockett doesnt look like our guy. Just hope Woodson is. If anything he could be converted to another skill position.

Here is an older story on the recruitment of Tom Woodson. Two things stand out:

1) Akron (presumably Ianello) started recruiting him early.

2) He made HUGE strides as a passer in 2012.

I think it's WAY to early to speculate a position move for this guy. Maybe Pohl's ability to move will cause the staff to make some adjustments along the lines GP1 has been suggesting: a pass-first QB who still provides running threat. Maybe by the time Woodson is called to start, he'll provide a strong pass-run combination? Watching UL-Lafayette's QB Broadway today (he'll be a tough opponent next year at the Info), he really kept ECU off-balance.

Bowden is a pretty smart guy. I know in his ideal world he wants a qb that doesn't run and just throws quick pinpoint passes. However, he was surprised at the talent level in the MAC and he also saw that mobile quarterbacks killed him. He knows that he needs to alter some of his thinking to compete and win. This kid may be just that guy. Who knows?

I think that's a good point. I remember multiple times last season TB said "we need to find the formula to win at Akron." I like a coach that has an open mind and is willing to adjust to his environment. I will definitely ask TB if his thinking is the same on QBs the next time I get a chance to speak to him. (If George T wants, he can ask the question)

  • 3 months later...

Completely unrelated to his own actions, Tommy Woodson suffered a bullet wound while on a 7v7 travelling squad back last year.

Thankfully, he's OK with no apparent long-term effects. Maybe this is partly why Arizona pulled their offer? If so, it sure looks like a knee jerk reaction in retrospect.

Looking forward to seeing Tommy in August. He just might end up as the back-up QB for 2013.
