Akron @ Toledo

This one scares the crap out of me. Toledo always plays the Zips tough, and is capable of putting together a very good game. The Zips cannot play like they played against other West teams and expect to come out of NW Ohio with a win.

Vegas says Zips are 6 point favorites.

I'll fall short of predicting a loss, but this one has all the indications of a real challenge: road game at probably the most talented team in the West, looking for a 10th consecutive win, the rest of the first round of games in the East following it up.

I agree that this is certainly no easy challenge. The Rockets have nothing to lose this season, and would love to take the wind out of our sails. Rian Pearson has sure shown in the past that he's a difficult matchup for the Zips. I wonder if KD will start with Harney guarding him. Nick can get caught on backpicks at times, but Pearson often comes straight at you, 1v1, so maybe this won't be a big issue. Whoever guards Pearson, he needs to limit the 2nd chance points. Rian ate us alive last time doing that.

In the end, I think Zeke and Tree will have big efforts once again to lead the Zips to another victory.

Toledo has considerable talent but has been wildly inconsistent. They will be fired up for us and other than our trip to Athens this figures to be our next stiffest MAC road game. Since they can not play in the post season we will have a large target on our backs. Coming off a hard fought win over our big rival, we may be heading into an ambush.

Glad someone mentioned names on this thread. I was thinking about the HUGE matchup at the JAR on Wednesday night between the MAC East co-leaders and the 15-2 Toledo Rockets Wahine basketball team. Now THAT is as big a home game as coach Jody Kest has had in her tenure at the Zips' helm. I surely do hope that the Zips' fans decide this game is worth coming out for. It could hold the key to the postseason for our women. Our gals are good enough to beat this team, whose only losses are by three to #17 Dayton on the road, and to CMU on the road. Hey Rowdies! What are your plans?

A detailed comparison of UA and Toledo on statsheet.com shows one area where Toledo is clearly superior -- free throw shooting. Toledo is #6 in the country in free throw percentage at 76.9% and the Zips are #219 at 67.2%. In a typical game, that should only be worth about 2 points. The Zips lead in just about every other area. But upsets happen every day in college basketball.

Toledo reminds me of Ohio a couple of years ago- young, undersized PG with a lot of potential, an aggressive SG that can take over a game.. and not much else. They played well in Athens saturday, weren't intimidated and fought for 40 minutes. Appear to be well coached and confident, they could be real dangerous in a year or two but still have the ability to rise up and take down a better team from time to time. The Bobcats went there last year and started the game 15-0, and lost. Zips will be able to hold them off, but it will take a solid team effort to do so.

I think it is going to be close early, but Toledo has no depth at all. We should be able to close them out the final 10 minutes or so. They literally play about a 7 man rotation, with multiple players averaging 32+ minutes per night.

The biggest thing that scares me is their backcourt of Pearson and Brown. If there is one place I feel like the Zips still struggle at times it is defending opposing guards. If we let both of those guys go off this becomes a real dangerous game. The only saving grace is that neither of them are very good from the 3 line (Pearson at 28%, Brown at 18%) which is where the Zips are more prone to giving up big games from opposing guards. We'll see how easy they find things trying to drive to the basket with Zeke guarding the rim.

The other thing that scares me a bit is their big guys. Not that Boothe and Wannell are particularly skilled, but they are both pretty physical guys. I would hate to see them start taking cheap shots at Zeke.

On a plus side for the Zips Gilliam, Harney, Tree and Kretzer ought to have a field day against their 3s and 4s. The only listed forward on their roster who sees any playing time is Matt Smith. Then you have a whole bunch of guards who are 6'4" or under and two 6'9" centers. I would look for another big game from Treadwell. The Rockets had a terrible time trying to contain Reggie Kelly against Ohio on Saturday, and I would expect a similar performance from Tree.

It should bear noting that we beat pretty much this same group of guys by 14 at the JAR last year.

Boothe isn't much athletically, but he's a decent shooter. Will be interesting to see if he draws Zeke and can pull him out of the key. It's important to make Brown a shooter and not a distributor. Juice isn't a great shooter and the offense works better when he's getting others involved instead of looking for his own shot. I'd also try to keep Smith from getting going.

This tells me to look for aggressive play. They'll want to bait the zips into trading shots at the stripe at the end of the game if it's remotely close. Need to get out early and demoralize them.
