Marla Talks Attendance

Recommended Posts

A quick look on their board and they are still actively using the Akron game thread from several weeks ago. They also have started a new Akron thread for the game that is 3 games away for them. I think they really have a thing for us. It's ok bobkitties to confess your love for the Zips.

Oh man, I can't wait

To be fair to this entire conversation Akron has been a better "team" over the last 8 years (as noted 8 consecutive 20 plus winning seasons) and 6 consecutive championships.

Over that 8 year span Akron is 10-8 against OU and the overall record between the two teams is 31-35 in favor of OU.

Where OU has the real edge and rightfully can talk smack is they are 2-0 against us in MAC Championships, but we've been to 6 consecutive while OU has only played in those two championship games. The real kicker being their run last year.

Overall Akron has been the Flagship of the MAC the last 8 years but OU has the national recognition we covet. As hard as it is to say I loved watching OU in last year's tournament because every mid-major team that takes down a big school is a win for all of us. I hate nothing more than watching 7 BigTen and 7 ACC schools in the tournament while teams like Akron go to the NIT.

I'll give OU props for their run last year but the Flagship moniker belongs to Akron.

The way I see it, the Kitties had an overall record of 85-56 in the 4 seasons that John Groce was head coach. Groce-coached teams seem to have a characteristic of both losing and winning games they're not expected to. Groce was good at coaching the Kitties to big wins despite so-so season records, and he's now doing the same at Illinois. He coached the Kitties to 2 MAC tournament championship wins in 4 years, an upset of Georgetown in his 1st NCAA tournament and a Sweet 16 run in the 2nd. Look at the teams his Illini have lost to and who they've beaten this season. I'm leaning more and more toward the theory that Groce has a unique ability to coach his teams to great performances in critical games. The Kitties still have to prove that they can do this without Groce.

Ohio won tournament games before John Groce... That is something the Akron program has never done.

Our present is better - we beat them this year and have the longest winning streak in the country.

Our future is brighter - We have coach Dambrot for a long time, a great core of players, great new players coming in and the possibility of a new arena that (if built to the same quality as Info) will make discussion of the JAR a moot point and make us even more attractive.

Who cares about anything else? We are really good ;)

Sweaters, Can't, Kitties and Zips have all had their turns at the top of the MAC. Kitties and Zips have been going back and forth for the past few seasons. We all know the history. The big question is what does the future hold? Who's built to continue being at or near the top season after season? We know that the Sweaters and Can't are both really down right now and the Kitties and Zips are up. Who brings back what next season? Who might be in for another coaching change and another disruption in the near future? Right now I feel really good about being a Zips fan for the long haul.
