If people can't cross a street to watch a game, they're better off staying home. Unless maybe the walk to their living room is too far... It's not about distance (or closeness) as much as it is about attitude and a true sense of campus. UA deserves its own sense of place. That's why the arena needs to be on the actual campus and not some pseudo-campus. Think about how central it is to NE Ohio, the major media outlets, and all the downtown activities. Plus, itd help expand UAs footprint on the area. There are so many reasons to do it, I wonder why we havent done it yet! Now you're starting to "think bigger." However, rather than centrally locate for NE Ohio, how about locating more centrally for the whole darn state? We could rent this place, even though it is a multi-use facility, it's supposed to be better for viewing basketball games than OSU's new(er) facility. Of course I may not be thinking bigger enough. Perhaps we should centrally locate for the nation or the world. Centrally locating intergalactically at this point may not make financial sense. As far as going places, it's very easy to get to the bars downtown or by Luigi's. Easier to get to places compared to the JAR. "Better than the JAR" is way too low a bar to set. We need the arena in a place where you can walk around or bar hop for a bit. As soon as you let patrons get back into their cars, they're gone. I'm surprised no one died of thirst trying to hike in distant, uncharted territory attempting to reach the nearest bar. So many people don't get this. Whether the arena is downtown or near Infocision, it's got to embrace the surroundings in a way that helps build up the neighborhood. Good urban design isn't the schools forte and that makes me a bit nervous. How long have we suffered through the whole commuter school image? I'm pleased at what I am seeing so far. That doesn't mean I am willing to settle. I'm also optimistic about the growth that is coming around the area of the football stadium. I see more retail, bars and restaurants coming to that area of exchange. Also, I've witnessed first hand that when Info is packed ( a very rare site so far ) the bars around the campus are as well. My original point was not about what I am happy with but how KD responded to the community as a whole showing up. I think we have a lot of support for our programs and our campus. People who claim that "a new UA arena should support the entire community as a whole" need to understand that UA already does so and will continue to do so with an on-campus arena. ABJ 9/6/09 - Proenza said he hears what the students want. And he thinks the new stadium is a perfect answer to their call. ''Students want two things,'' Proenza said. ''Residence halls and structures that bring them together. We're going to build another residence hall behind the stadium. And we think that the stadium itself is going to serve as an anchor structure, both for our students and local residents. ''The stadium will help to create a better sense of campus and a better sense of community for everybody. It's a great facility for everybody in Northeast Ohio and it's going to prove that beginning Saturday. It's got people throughout the region excited.'' Lifelong Akron resident Sally Howard, a former ticket taker at the Rubber Bowl, is one. ''I've dreamed about this [stadium on campus] for most of my life,'' said Howard, who graduated from Akron in 1973. ''But I never thought I'd live to see this happen. ''And I didn't dare to dream that we'd see something as wonderful as this. It's absolutely gorgeous, more impressive than I ever thought it would be. ''Now, I really do believe in miracles. It's a definite wow!'' An off-campus arena will make us look more like a commuter no-campus college and not less. Downtown Akron looks no more like a university campus than the man-in-the-moon and everyone knows this no matter how much they try to spin it for their dishonest agendas which consists of the mayor and county executive... both of whom roll their eyes and mock UA by calling it "Akron U" when no one is looking or listening.
