Luis Proenza to retire

Recommended Posts

Of course...right now we're dealing with anecdotes...so we're obviously not proving anything (but they're interesting for discussion). My experience has been just the opposite Hilltopper...granted I believe our circles might be different. Most of the recent-and soon to be grads, honors students and a good portion of the science departments I was a part of, thought it was absurd. Now this was the students not the faculty of course.

Of course I doubt faculty would say anything bad about their probably soon-to-be-president if asked publicly. Those members I know personally don't think its a good idea.

I don't hang around with OSU honks. More like past presidents of the Alumni Association, graduates who are partners in major NEO law firms and accounting firms, board members of major public and charitable organizations etc... The kind of people who actually make big financial contributions to UA. They love JT and think he is the right guy for the job.

YSU's last President to sneak out of town after 7 months was the previous Murray State President. He was well liked and well thought of and someone many felt fortunate enough to get. I think the biggest issue in Youngstown is the fact that YSU Engineering Dean Dr. Abraham was not a finalist for the 2nd straight time. He is a finalist for the provost at NIU and is credited for the launching of the STEM college at YSU and has played a major role in the growth of tech/high-end manufacturing in Downtown Youngstown.

You know, I cut you a little bit of slack on the the "all of my friends say....." comments, but this is getting ridiculous now. You're trying too hard. This doesn't make your opinion any more valid.

Do you want me to post my resume on here too? All the boards I've served on? All of the major people I do business with?

Anyone concerned about the tidbits reported about Tressel's presentation today? Sounds like he as much as promised to cut spending on intercollegiate athletics.

He said the University spends too much, meaning between the cost of athletics and the revenue athletics generates, the University has to spend too much on that remainder. Common concern with all Universities outside of the top 7-8 athletics programs.

The goal, and athletics has already started, is to reduce that gap, part of that is having winning programs that draw more fans, part of that is finding more sponsors/donors, and the last part of it is pushing your conference to get better revenue rights for broadcasting (or finding one that already has that).

So let me get this right, it's OK for you to claim that everyone you know hates Tressel, but my claiming the opposite is wrong. I could care less about your resume.

No, not at all. And I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I'm just suggesting that you might want to consider who you might be debating with when attempting to make a point by boasting that the people you know are somehow more important people than the associates of another poster.

Even if you "couldn't" care less, I wasn't going to post it anyway.

So What I'm getting from you Hilltopper, older-people who are not attending the U anymore, and were likely somewhat OSU honks at some point (I remember hearing a lot from former Alumni presidents about getting JT to coach here) have a different opinion of the current students/younger-folk, on who should be the leader for their University.

I think this is an important distinction to bring up because I think it's important to engage the young alumni/current students on this issue because they are what turn into supporting alumni and part of the Akron-Community. We should be focused on getting the best candidate for the job, not just someone that everyone likes...or that donors and previous alumni like...etc.

I mean, I cannot believe anyone can seriously say that they believe this "search" (and I use that term lightly because I'm not an idiot, clearly this was JT's job from the getgo) was good and fruitful for the university. If what we all suspect is true...that this was JT's job from the get-go...we should be extremely concerned. Supporters can spout how the trustees are "honestly, and sincerely making hard decisions" all they want...because I don't see that. School-Boards, Boards of Trustees make terrible decisions all the time and stand behind that same argument. What supports whether or not they actually did their due-diligence, is in the evidence of the search. This search bleeds nothing but a sham to prop up JT, which is troubling.

Ok, you got me on that one! ;) My wife hates when I butcher that and makes fun of me about getting it wrong.

I had to do that. I'm glad you took it that way. We certainly have a big difference of opinion here on this hire, but we surely both want what's best for the U and the Zips. And that's the important part. I wish there were more people like us that were this passionate about Akron. Actually, make that THOUSANDS more people like us.

JT has worked here for over 2 years now? Or somewhere around that. He's been interviewing since 2012, in a nutshell. If Dr Proenza and all thought he's ready, then maybe he was the candidate from the get-go, but I'm sure it had a little to do with his performance so far, no?

Which is why that should be disturbing. Performance as...whatever title he has...seriously? Seriously...THE BEST CANDIDATE!? That's why it should be disturbing. To everyone. 2-years of performance...at a made up position, specifically made up to bring him to UA, with a rather nebulous job description. Yeah, sounds like a very serious search.

Yes, seriously, how are we measuring his "performance" in a position like that ? Is "student success" on the rise? Can there possibly be any way to measure that in 2 years?

It's all a big joke.

GP1 would be sold in a perfect world. His bias will prevent him in this situation, though.

The Senator is going to be the next President whether you like it or not. It's time to get over it and root for him.

I don't know how you guys can stand to debate in circles so many times.

First of all, Nobody is arguing about predictions about whether he will or will not get the job. That's completely out of our hands.

Secondly, I think it's a horrible decision, it's bad for Akron, and it's an embarrassment. Why would I root for that?

There is one thing that caught my attention. I was reading the article in the Beacon and I saw this:

“What are you trying to do, intimidate me?”
He may have been joking, but taking a swipe at one of the few nationally know and respected professors in his field(John Green) is NOT to win anyone over! Myself included!
