New look for Zips to debut at home opener?

Language evolves over time. Unique was originally used only in the absolute sense. Dictionary.com has a usage note for unique that explains how it has evolved into multiple uses:

I agree this happens, but I'd like to hear zesty weigh in on this one. I don't mind language evolving, but I don't really know why that has happened with different words over time.

But in very recent history, words like "unique" and "literally" only seem to be evolving because most people are using them incorrectly. So we decide incorrect can just be correct. That seems depressing.

Sure, words change meaning over time, but this isn't really one of those cases. Dictionary.com has a definition for the word irregardless even though it's just a nonstandard way of saying 'regardless.' That's a more apt comparison.

Saying things like irregardless and 'very' unique is something called a buffer phrase. People use them when speaking and writing in a formal fashion. The speaker / writer is usually anxious about what they're saying / writing and want to add some extra words as a buffer. A lot of the time, however, people use buffer phrases out of habit, even when they're comfortable speaking / writing.

Regardless, this is a nerdy way of saying that it's a mistake that the athletic department wouldn't make if they had a copy editor (or a good copy editor, depending on the case). Thanks for indulging me.

Don't count on any improvement soon. Individuals employed at university athletic departments nationwide routinely display their lack of grammatical skills as if it were a badge of honor.

Like the zipper on the helmet, but I can't stand the 'Z' that I saw for the first time against Michigan today. This team represents Akron and "Roo A" represents that while incorporating the mascot as well. My point is that if you use letters as part of the logo they should be the letters of who you represent not just the first letter of your nickname. The 'Z' may have some marketability but please save it for the front of the jersey where it looks better anyway.

I like the Zipper on the helmet. It visually explains what "Zips" refers to, which is something half of our own alumni probably don't even know. I liked the concept and generally how it was execute. Others on here have made a few subtle suggestions (i.e. the underlying color) that I agree with.

Without any prior knowledge of the change, my dad noticed the zipper on the helmet from TV and thought it was pretty cool.

I think about it this way. There are only a handful of football helmets that are truly unique. We are the only football team in the country, at any level, that can use this design. It could easily work on any color helmets we want down the road, blue, white, or traditional gold. If it is kept around for years it become our signature style. Similar to the Vikings, Rams, Bengals, Eagles, etc.

Even if you're not sold on the design now, you have wonder what people thought of those iconic helmets. You think at first people loved the idea of tiger stripes or viking horns on a helmet?

The Zipper has been removed for a few games if I am not mistaken. I liked the zipper, especially after they got rid of (I believe) the wording on the front of it.

I also like the Zipper stripe. Looks great on t.v. If anyone from UA Athletics reads ZNO, I vote to bring the Zipper stripe back; at least get it into a more regular rotation.

But I don't believe they removed the wording (yet) in the front of it. The wording is pretty cheesy. Get rid of the wording & put that stripe back on the helmet.
