johnnyzip84
Zips open as 22 point underdogs. While I agree with those who think it's not the time for a "depth chart overhaul", I wouldn't mind seeing some "tweaking": 1) Let Hundley and DJ Jones carry it more. 2) Sconiers and Frieson going down has wiped away the depth the Zips once had at WR. Maybe JC7's speed would be of better use with him as a full time receiver? 3) Drew Phillips looks like he deserves a shot at KR and slot receiver. 4) The transfer O-Linemen are certainly large, but they are very slow and not very athletic (there's a reason they were each available). I think this is a big part of the running game woes. Let's keep the redshirts on this year's class of O-Linemen, but start to get a few more reps for the 2nd year guys, especially when the game is out of hand. 5) Bowden starts to call plays again. MDZip
NIU #23 in both polls. This is going to be tough. I think they'd beat Michigan. Maryland went from a #25 ranking to receiving no votes in either poll after their 63-0 beatdown by FSU. Ball State got a few votes. And in NFL news, the Broncos have tied for the highest point spread in NFL history, 28 points, against the Jaguars.
Captain Kangaroo
NIU #23 in both polls. This is going to be tough. I think they'd beat Michaigan. 1-7 MAC team beats #24 ranked opponent

Captain Kangaroo
At home. Great point. Home field advantage at the Rubber Bowl was a massive, borderline unfair plus for the Zips. I think we were something like 39-1 over our previous 40 games there. Again, great point.
LZIp
5) Bowden starts to call plays again. Take it FWIW, but I've heard from a reliable source that Milwee called the plays last year as well. Promoting him to OC was more of a formality and less of a change in responsibility. Bowden comment from Dec 12."He and I shared much of the play calling duty this past year and I will continue to work closely with the offense." Maybe I can email Belichick's old guy, I'll try to listen in to their conversation during the game and let you guys know exactly what's going on. ZachTheZip
PD article: Zips feeling the heat Hirschman still not completely cleared to play. "Doubtful" for saturday.
Lee Adams
So what this program is still saying, since 2006, is that we can only 'hope' to compete with the weak sisters. They are no closer to being able to 'compete' with the best teams in the MAC than they were last year,2 years ago etc, etc. Bowden gets his 5 years. Remember, this starts affecting recruiting NEXT season. I would not think that Bowden will get any kind of extension until he shows some VERY significant progress in the win column. Recruits will look to see if Bowden will be around in 2015 or 2016 before they decide to sign on at Akron. Its is critical that this program win at least a couple more games this season and get to .500 next season. Otherwise... How sad.
ZachTheZip
I say we're better than Miami and UMass this year, and should beat them handily even though they're road games.

The Hip Zip
1-7 MAC team beats #24 ranked opponent I remember it like yesterday because it's probably one the greatest games at any level that I ever attended. The sight of watching the Herd O line carrying Leftwich downfield to take the next snap was simply amazing and something that you and I will never see again. Another thing that made it great was that the Marshall fan base traveled like a big ten team to support the Herd to just about anywhere. I believe the crowd was split close to 50/50 that night. There was green everywhere so to see the Zips play over their heads that night was incredible. Fantastic game that nobody saw coming
The Hip Zip
I say we're better than Miami and UMass this year, and should beat them handily even though they're road games. The sad thing is that they play each other so somebody is going to get a W. I hear they are running a special promo at U Mass. Any fan of the 743 in attendance that actually stays awake for the full 60 minutes of play gets a Cadillac.

akzipper
This game will be ugly. Very very ugly... A Zips team that has given up on the season vs. a ranked opponent? wow.
Dave in Green
Coincidence alert: Checking into our hotel in Illinois today for my high school class reunion, the first thing we notice on the bulletin board is a schedule for the Zips football team breakfast this morning. Turns out we're in the same hotel where the Zips stayed last night before today's game! Getting on the elevator with us is a gentleman all dressed up in Zips gear. I tell him I'm a season ticket holder and ask him if he goes to all the games. He says, yes, his son is on the team. I ask who and he says L.T. Smith. As we get off the elevator, I tell him his son is one fine player and wish him luck today. His dad smiles and we shake hands. What a nice gentleman, and what an unexpected coincidence. akzipper
Well the Zips had a chance for a few minutes. Another dumb personal foul penalty cost them on this drive. Pohl sucks...6 incompletions in a row?

Zipgrad1990
A gift blocked field goal we did nothing with. My guess is NIU will score on this drive. Please defense make me wrong!
akzipper
If the Zips want any chance to win, they need to score on the first drive of the second half. Set the tone and get some of the momentum. I am surprised we got back into the game. But I think this is one of those games where the lack of depth will catch up with us and NIU will run away with it in the second half.
