mes102
On my way to go get some breakfast. I'm going to go watch some up-tempo, entertaining basketball at 10:30am. Tired of this grinding, pounding, half-court basketball. We have the athletes to play more up-tempo, but we don't play up-tempo. Don't tell me we tried, with the pressure full-court. There's other ways to help the tempo of the game. Just watch the women's team play, and you'll see what I mean. The men's team weaknesses right now is the women's team strengths. Free throws aren't that hard. Even at 4am in the morning.
Dave in Green
Big Dog is definitely the bright spot of the night for the Zips. If he can play this well in his first game as a true freshman against a team like Saint Mary's, he should be able to feast on the MAC. Hilltopper
Unless Evans steps up his game this is going to be a tough season. Big Dog has been the highlight of this game for the zips.
akronzips71
And of course Tree with his usual double double. 17-11 if I got it right.
Dave in Green
Outside of rebounding, the box score is really ugly. Middle Tennessee on the road is not going to be much easier.

This team simply is what it is. Good enough to get hot in Cleveland (see what I did). But not good enough to make any noise. Simple as that. GoZips
Old man up at five AM watching his beloved Zips play gawd awful. Bright spots (a few): Demetrius Treadwell played his kester off. Great game Tree. Big Dog shows he can play. Kwan earned his minutes. The down side (many): Most of the team is out of playing condition. Zero excuse for that. Failure to execute offense or defense as taught. "heros" trying to take over the game. Horrible point guard play from both the point guards. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Hurried shots repeatedly. Why? Other factors: Three AM start time is a killer. Midnight was bad enough for the Gaels. Horrid officiating. They made sure St. Mary's got the breaks. For the unbelievers: Quincy called for fouling a three ball shot. He NEVER touched the guy. Q looked pained by the phantom call. You think being a Catholic school that St. Mary's would have some integrity (coach responsible for this). Well, St. Mary's is on probation for of all things, cheating. GoZips88
Tree is out of gas. Just way too sloppy. Can Gladden or Jackson play point? I think we've found our red-shirts.

I love the name "old school" for IJ23. Fits his game. I agree with everybody about Tree. Love his effort. I'll take 5 of him on any sports team I play on. We need to learn how to finish around the rim...still. (tired of typing that) We expel SO much energy on defense, and very little on offense...still. (tired of typing that) OC underdog giving up the points with KD is always money. Disappointing game, but a long season. We need to peak after blowing through the cupcakes again. Like KD says...I'm tired of losing early in the season. On the positive side, it was fun waking up at 6 am and watching the Zips with my coffee. And the announcers weren't annoying (comparatively speaking).
Big Zip
Woke up early this morning to watch the game. I am certainly glad I didn't stay up to watch. Very disappointing game. I'm not sure I've seen a team look like five individuals on offense more than this one. It has been beaten to death but if these are our PGs for the entire year we are going nowhere. We have two PGs who right now are no threat to score whatsoever. I can make an argument for Kretzer or McAdams being on the floor at all times. We need their three point shooting and coming off the bench I'm afraid it takes them some time to get into rhythm. We need their shooting desperately -- we needed it today but it was not a thought. The rules change to not allow hand checking is going to be quite interesting. I have no idea what the plan is for this rule. Last night we saw a hand check get called one time down the court and then the next time down the court nothing was called.
legendofzippy
Woke up early this morning to watch the game. I am certainly glad I didn't stay up to watch. Same here! Overall, it's an early season game. Playing on the west coast at 3 am - kind of hard to get a read on that. I'd say they hung in there but couldn't hit a three. There were some good looks around the 10 minute mark that didn't drop. Maybe they get a little momentum if they hit a few of those? Who knows. PG play is a big question right now, but that's the reality for a lot of teams in college BB so let's see what the coaching staff comes up with. Too early to start jumping off bridges. I think we're in unison on one thing - future looks bright for Big Dog. And Tree was impressive, which he'll need to be all year.
Dave in Green
Following a couple of hours more sleep after the game, I woke up thinking how much the Zips miss Zeke in the middle after relying on him for four seasons. The Gaels scored lots of easy points in the paint that would not have happened on Zeke's watch.

PS Zeke would have fouled out (no fault of his own) in that game since he would have been left isolated on so many Gaels that broke the press. Derrt
Quincy played way too passive for me last night, but I still do not understand why KD would not let him run point with all the issues we were having with Saint Mary's bigger gaurds. Also, Carmelo and Nyles should NEVER be our inbounds person either, they are too short. I thought BIG DOG's weight was going to be an issue for him, but seeing that he could go toe to toe with Saint Mary's 00 I was impressed. I just really hate that we always choke on TV. phil
I just finished watching the game and was very impressed with our Big Guys. I thought Pat had a great first half, Tree was amazing, Big Dawg played big and Q had a respectable game. However our wings and guard play lost the game when we could not make an outside shot. I yelled at the TV when Kretzer first shot was in the Eastern time zone, about 6 feets behing the 3 line. Is this the best shot you can take? It killed our momentum and St. Mary went on a spurt. I thought the commentators were spot on, Somebody needed to make some outside shots for Akron for us to stay in the game. It just never happened. They also noted that our offense had no flow to it. It was purely one on one. We had 8 assists to 19 turnovers. St. Mary had 16 assist to 10 turnovers. Evans did not have an assist and Carmello had 2. Carmello played good D but that is about it. He is not a good passer and does not have a good shot. He needs to get better or he will be on the bench. Ibitayo had an early stupid foul and never saw the court again. Hopefully, this team needs to start passing and develop an offensive flow. This team will struggle against good teams early. However, the talent is there to improve so that they can compete against good teams later in the season. Finally, the St. Mary's arena looked very similar to the JAr. I believe we would draw much better if we had a midnight game on ESPn

ZipsNation.org, The unofficial web home of overly optimistic Akron Zips fans. Here is the Michigan thread. Most were happy that we played well, and upset about the final no hold call on D'Orazio. I don't see "everybody" predicting a feast in the MAC??? History would prove why Zips fans would predict feasting on a MAC basketball schedule. Football, not so much. Many members on ZN are realistic, there are a handful of fans that see a lot through blue and gold glasses. It's up to the reader of ZN to figure out who is who, and what you enjoy to read. Have fun. Agree, Quincy should get more time running the point. I am not a fan of Carmelo at all. Too small and does to much dribble penetration and then dump off.....usually in traffic where a turnover, jumpball, or a reset resulting in wasted clock management for the O. I have always said that KD needs to recruit PG's at least 6'0". His guards have no chance in marquee matchups due to height. We have been exposed far too often. I like Tree's play.....A BEAST! Really impressed with Old School! I said the other night that Forsthye would be damn good by the end of the season as I liked his play against CC but I may have to retract with Old School coming on strong. I hate it when we are on national TV. We just never play our best. On the other hand! Bring On MTSU!!! this should be a great game!!! Go Zips!!! legendofzippy
For those saying we always choke on TV, um, we've done ok in bracketbuster games, won a few MAC championships, have beat some pretty good Can't and OU teams..... let's not get carried away. Also, nationally televised games mean we're playing a pretty good team, so no shame in losing those really. Let's be happy we get prime-time games, plenty of other MAC teams would like to have that problem.
dirtyolcrowe
All points are valid....but we have to MAC the tourney to get into the show. You cant bank on an at large bid to get in. Bracketbuster wins are great. How did that help us get into the show? Wins against Cant and OU. again great but the selection committee looks for signature wins, outside of the MAC...we may have had 1(MTSU) that was played at home last year. NDSU another at home. Sorry.....but they need a win on national TV get over that hump.
