LZIp Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 Thought I'd create a thread to keep a little track of how our conference opponents are doing. Hopefully its alright for the basketball forum. Can't St had a nice OOC win against Temple yesterday. Ohio had a nice win against Northern Iowa in their opener. They lost to OSU tonight, but hung tough the whole game, even with 4 of their front court players fouled out. Taylor and Kellogg will be the guys we have to worry about. From what I've seen so far, I'm not going to right them off from being MAC contenders. Quote

I think they are flat out a better team without Holt. D Jackson looked terrific for them. Stevie Taylor can play, no doubt about it. OU will still be a dangerous team but they can't match us inside and neither can K E N T Quote
tpsjugglerdude Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 Can't definitely looked good vs Temple. They tried to give the game away at the end but Temple just wouldn't take it. For OU, I think their best player this year will be Maurice Ndour. He didn't play well tonight and fouled out, but keep an eye on him. Quote

Ndour is aggressive, opportunistic and seemed to be right there on the edge of out-of-control. Seems to be a cross between Tree and Q. I enjoyed watching him play against tosu and was impressed at how well OU hung in there and played hard right to the end. Quote

I wouldn't say he didn't play well though. OSU exploited their speed advantage all night to keep OU in foul trouble, but Akron doesn't play like that. Our bigs better be ready for his energy. I was hoping for a down year from OU but it doesn't appear that way. Very early though. Quote
skip-zip Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 Ohio had a nice win against Northern Iowa in their opener. They lost to OSU tonight, but hung tough the whole game, even with 4 of their front court players fouled out. They did better than "hang tough", even with a depleted lineup. They were within 6 with a few minutes to go, in OSWho's arena. Quote
Bubba4three Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 10 points and 9 boards from NDour but also 5 turnovers and 5 fouls. OSU doubled him, would expect that to happen the rest of the year. Stevie Taylor played very well, again. I expect an Ohio and Akron finals rematch. Quote
The Hip Zip Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Toledo takes one on an ACC floor !! This just in: The rockets are loaded and I mean really loaded. They have some guys that can really score and I don't mean just a couple of dudes. They are well balanced and fun to watch. I know that a ton of people picked them to take the MAC West and that projection seems spot on. This is a very good basketball team. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Toledo beat 0-3 Boston College by 3 points, 95-92. BC had previously lost to Providence and UMass, both top 100 teams. It was a good win that the Zips would have been happy to get. Toledo obviously has its act together and will be a tough opponent for the Zips, especially if the Zips don't get much stronger at the point. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 It was a good win that the Zips would have been happy to get. Heck, there's a lot of Zips fans that would have been happy to lose to BC by 20. Quote

BC has been pretty terrible in the last couple of years so I would read too much into this win until we are further into the season. If I remember right they only won 9 or 10 games a couple years ago. Quote

Looks like they are officially no longer a cupcake? Quote
Sean Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Honestly Toledo gave up 92 points on 51% shooting to BC. Sure maybe they are not terrible this year, but I for one am not willing to praise them for a win against defense that happened to be worse then theirs. They have not played any other teams yet so lets not rush to judgement. Quote
Dr Z Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Kudos to the Rockets. Looks like they are officially no longer a cupcake?I'm surprised they upset BC with Rian only scoring nine! They must have some real support for him. Excited to see a team play that is 20th in the nation in scoring. Looking forward to see them 1/18. Quote

It will be interesting to see what Toledo does tonight and what happens against Florida Atlantic next week. They have a ton of games coming up. Quote

They're playing one OOC game tonight and in the 2K sports Classic this weekend, so they get 4 games this week. Why such a long layoff for Akron? 11/16 to 12/2 with only an exhibition game seems like a really long time. Quote
taxpayer Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 Gives the staff time to coach players and address what they've seen so far. Lots to do. Quote
Bubba4three Posted November 19, 2013 Report Posted November 19, 2013 That is strange. Lets see how it works out for them. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 23, 2013 Report Posted November 23, 2013 Ball State leading Butler at the half, 30-23. Butler may not be quite the same without Brad Stevens coaching, but they were 3-0 going into this game with wins over Lamar, Princeton and Vanderbilt. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 23, 2013 Report Posted November 23, 2013 Trailing by a single point, Ball State had two chances to win in the last few seconds, but missed a layup and a tip-in as time ran out and lost to Butler 59-58. Quote
LZIp Posted November 23, 2013 Author Report Posted November 23, 2013 Miami just lost to D3 Wilmington. Good job , Redhawks! Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Not MAC, but gotta post right now before the score changes that the Zips' next D1 opponent, Cleveland State, has run out to an early 13-6 lead over #3 Kentucky at Rupp Arena. Edit: It's getting more interesting -- 19-10. Update: Kentucky came back to take a 25-22 lead, then Cleveland State came back to take a 31-27 lead at halftime. Pretty impressive. Upset alert: Halfway through the second half, Cleveland State has pulled out to a 47-38 lead. Quote
LZIp Posted November 26, 2013 Author Report Posted November 26, 2013 tough effort by CSU. To me, looked like Kentucky got some weak calls towards the end. Its worth mentioning that this CSU team lost to EMU by double digits. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 CSU was in it right up until the last minute of the game. I don't expect them to be intimidated by the Zips. Quote
akzipper Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Thankfully Kentucky was able to win. I just can't root for mid-majors/upsets anymore. Maybe it's selfish of me but it's just frustrating seeing it happen for every school except us. We NEVER get the upset. We come close occasionally, but it is yet to happen. Not sure how many more times I can sit around and watch Butlers, VCUs, and George Masons make the final four. Or MAC rivals make the sweet16 and elite8. Honestly when is it our time?! Quote
