zippy5
Respectfully, this is not very good evidence for why the league is no longer a laughing stock..... Didn't say that's why they are no longer a laughing stock. They are no longer a laughingstock because they are playing better football. The points I made are just evidence of not being a joke anymore, not the reasons why. I agree with what you said.
Dave in Green
... How much statistical evidence do I have to make this case some might ask? I have zero statistical evidence other than my ability to watch a game without wanting to grab for the remote as quickly as possible. ... Good observation. Stats aren't required to measure entertainment value, and sports are entertainment. I'd rather watch an entertaining game between two MAC teams than a boring game between two BCS conference teams. MACtion is gaining traction because it delivers what it promises. I'm looking forward to watching the NIU-BGSU shootout.
LZIp
I am really bummed I am so late to this party. I would have had a lot to contribute, by I'll just leave it at this: Isn't it a bit ironic that some of the same posters that are levying that OSU should not play on the Championship game are the same ones complaining that NIU is too low? That is a great observation, LZip. As I have said numerous times on this board bias is a bitch. OSU gets pilloried here for their SOS, but somehow NIU is getting screwed because their undefeated season isn't given enough respect by voters. You just can't have it both ways. My guess is that neither OSU nor NIU are worthy of thier current rankings. I can see teams ranked below each of them that are better. (I am rooting for the Huskies, though.) MDZip
The two should play in a bowl game. That, I would watch. If NIU wins the MACC and Michigan State wins the B1GC there is an outside chance that could occur but it's sadly not too likely. I wouldn't completely discount NIU in such a scenario either. K92
As I have said numerous times on this board bias is a bitch. Speaking of bias. . . There was a conversation amongst Ohio State fans the other day about the possibility of Auburn leapfrogging the Buckeyes following the conference championship games if both teams won. One of the OSU fans said "there is no way Auburn should jump Ohio State because they won games against Georgia and Alabama on pure luck". At this point I had to interject, "kinda like that miracle pass to Michael Jenkins that Krenzel pulled out of his ass to beat Purdue and the interference call on Chris Gamble in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl". If looks could kill.

I wouldn't completely discount NIU in such a scenario either. Michigan State regardless of a win or loss will be in the Rose Bowl. If OSU wins they will likely go to the BCS, sure ESPN will have you believe otherwise, but OSU will be at 2 and have beaten a top 10 team in a championship game. They would earn enough computer points from that to stay ahead of Auburn (the only other team with any real shot). NIU will not end up in the Rose Bowl, it fills with PAC 12/BIG 10 so since two BIG 10 schools will be BCS Bowl eligible, Michigan State goes to the Rose Bowl. NIU is looking to be Fiesta Bowl bound. Which likely will be the Big 12 winner (OCan't State).

I think you are correct, Michigan State is pretty well locked into the Rose Bowl no matter what happens in the B1GC because they aren't going to play in the NC game, however, if they win the B1GC that knocks OSU out of the NC but probably not out of the BCS bowls. Never said a word about NIU somehow being in the Rose Bowl. In the scenario I was referring to, both NIU and OSU would be effectively at large teams and could get matched up. I said it wasn't likely but it is possible. As a matter of fact I think I am going to root for that to happen. Go MSU! One other NIU note, I wondered who played them the closest since the Zips had a good game against them, however they beat Iowa by only 3 and Eastern Illinois by 4, but the Zips were the only team to hold them under 30 and that was at NIU. Nice job Chuck and company.

And other than 'Bama having lost recently, I think they are as good as anyone in the country.

The human polls, which account for 2/3rds of the BCS formula, will be the deciding factor. If both Auburn and tOSU win, the computers will give Auburn slightly more credit for beating #5 Missouri than tOSU will get for beating #10 Michigan State. That in itself would not be enough to change the rankings. But if tOSU squeaks by MSU and Auburn trounces Missouri, we are going to see a wild scramble in the human polls. Human voters can be swayed by style points.
Dave in Green
@trimmy10, oddsmakers are giving Missouri a lot of respect. Auburn opened as just a 1-point favorite.

Hmmmm. Hmmmmm alright. Winners of the last SEVEN BCS championships.......not 1, not 2 ,not 3.....SEVEN!!! I'll admit it seems likely at this point that an SEC team will be left out of the 2014 BCS championship game. If this happens, the 2014 "national champ" will deserve about as much respect as the 1984 "national champs". Even Urban knew what he was talking about back in 2006. I'm not going to deny that the SEC is the best (at the top). But don't you think its a little interesting that A&M (6-6 their last year in the Big 12, also lost Tannehill) comes into the league and dominates their first year with a redshirt freshman? Or a middle of the pack Big 12 team is playing for the championship in their second year? Auburn and Missouri were a complete joke last year and were picked to finish 9th and 11th in conference this year. Note that Missouri and A&M are running the conference without SEC "talent". The only team I have real respect for in that conference is Bama. If the SEC wanted a rep in the national title game, they shouldn't have lost. Or wait, let's just make the SEC championship game the national championship and get rid of all the other 110+ teams that shouldn't have a right to play for anything
