Zips Baseball

I haven't liked the MAC format of 4 teams on each side of the bracket playing down to one winner, instead of a true 8 team double elimination. As it stands now, Zips will potentially play the Buffalo / Miami winner twice tomorrow (if Akron loses the first game). After that, you play the winner of the other side of the bracket potentially twice. The MAC bracket is fairly standard for the first few games, but it's the last few that seems a little odd.

It is a bit of an odd format since it is not true double elimination. It is double elimination on each side of the bracket and those the survivors play 1 game for the championship. As it stands right now if Akron and Can't (the last two who have not lost) each win their next games they will play 1 game for the title so if that happens the loser will have only lost one game instead of two. With most double elimination tournaments that I am familiar with the one that gets to the title game undefeated would take on the loser of the elimination bracket and that team would have to win two games against the top team to win the tournament (and usually there are also crossover games so that you don't have to play the same team twice until the championship) so it is a little bit of an odd format.

With this format, however, Buffalo or Miami would have to beat the Zips two straight games to keep the Zips from the championship game, so now I like it. :)

Is it one game for the finals for certain? Or does it depend on if one or both of the final two have a loss or not?

If the finals ends up a best two out of three then I think this format would essentially be the same as the College World Series in Omaha, just with some odd game times along the way.

The MAC bracket indicates a championship game Sunday noon, with a replay Sunday 3:30 if necessary.

However, if both Akron and Can't win to make it to the final game, shouldn't it be 3 games? Doesn't look like the game schedule allows for that. Is there a 'total runs' tiebreaker after two games or something similar?

Here is the bracket - http://www.mac-sports.com/Portals/20/2014MACBaseballBracket_1.pdf. It says that the Championship Game Replay will be necessary if both teams have 1 loss after Championship Game is complete so it appears that if both Akron and Can't make the championship game undefeated, it's a winner take all scenario, but if one enters with one loss and wins the "final" game, one more will be played to determine a champion. Still an odd format. :)

I see what you are saying. I interpret it to mean that if both teams enter the finals with one loss there is one game to decide the title. If both teams enter the finals undefeated there is one game to determine the title. If the championship is between a team with one loss and a team that is undefeated then the one loss team must beat the undefeated team twice.

The odd thing about that would be if both are undefeated scenario, the other scenarios would result in a two loss team and seem to make sense.

Coach Rembielak's suspension sure doesn't seem to have a negative effect. Since his return the team has been playing pretty inspired ball. The final game of the season whipping by Can't was meaningless. I would suspect that coach was holding back his pitching to set it up for the MAC tourney run.

This is correct. If both (or neither) teams enter the championship with no losses, its one game. If one of them has a loss, they would have to win twice.

He did change pitchers right before the last game, when they had clinched a spot. The starter couldn't have been fully prepared to pitch that game.
