BGSU @ UA

Recommended Posts

Zips are favored by a surprising (to me) 8 points. When you don't even know who'll be available for UA tomorrow, it sure seems like it could go in many different ways. BG is definitely capable of taking it to the Zips, whose collective psyche can't be particularly strong right now. You would think Jehvon Clarke will have a healthy contingent at the JAR to support him tomorrow.

If Jake plays, I see the Zips winning 71-66.

Bad offensive first half, but otherwise a pretty steady performance.

Can't figure out why a crowd that size can make such little noise. Come on folks. Once again, the band is by far our most vocal cheering section.

Did anyone see Carmelo, Deji, and Evans all on the floor at the same time? With Kwan and Tree? Is that the smallest lineup ever from this groups of players? Not sure what Keith saw that made him do that, but it was in the 2nd half when we were playing some of our best ball of the night.

Dambrot complimented the crowd's responsiveness.

I'd rather have the band be silent, if all they're going to do is chant the alphabet.

Skip, you have a good eye for what changed the game. For the first 28 minutes, BG was dominating the paint and playing even with the Zips. The score was 32-32 at 12:14 of the second half when Coach Dambrot put Melo and Nyles together in the backcourt. Just 2 minutes later, at 10:15 with the Zips up 38-34, Deji joined Melo and Nyles in the backcourt as the Zips went small. BG countered by going small and lost their advantage in the paint as Tree took advantage of the open space. The smaller Zips forced several turnovers, took control of the game and ran up a 46-36 advantage over the next 5 minutes. At 5:09 Q replaced Deji while Melo and Nyles remained in the game and the Zips held their 10-point lead to the finish.

The Zips played with only 2 bigs on the floor over the last 12 minutes of the game, and Melo and Nyles remained on the court for that full 12 minutes along with either Deji or Q when the Zips finally broke away from BG and ran up a double-digit lead. Who would have expected those two to be on court together for so long and play such a big role in the Zips victory? Dr Z asked in another thread when anyone had seen the Zips have a creative scheme. We saw it tonight when the Zips went small with a 3-guard offense to defeat a team that was playing them even when both teams went big.

I thought the Zips had penetrating the Bowling Green defense because of our spacing problems. We have too many post up players and the middle was clogged. When KD went to the smaller lineup it opened up the lane allowing our guards to penetrate the defense and dish off to the open player. I don't think Big Dog and Pat saw the floor 5 minutes into the second half.

When Tree gets the ball the players guarding Pat and Big Dog double on Tree and we seem to have trouble getting a good shot. Leaving the middle open and allowing our guards to penetrate made our spacing look much better. Obviously. it helps when we can make some 3 point baskets.

The point is at least the band is trying to be vocal. The crowd doesn't seem that into it anymore, especially the student section. If you watch other schools on TV the band and crowd work together and there are cheers that everybody in the stands know. I wish that could happen at Akron.

The student section will never work with the way the seating is set up.

The AK-Rowdies are pretty much dead. Hoping they re-brand the student section for next season and figure out some ways to get more students in attendance and close to the action

Nice crowd and the student sections behind the hoops are 1/2 full. What a joke.

Should be first come first serve behind the hoops. That way real fans will be down there....ones that don't need a dry erase board to tell them what to say during the opposing teams line up.

The student section won't work because the students don't go to the games, not because of the way the seating is set up.

Both sections half full? I saw about 20 rowdies on the south side by the visitors bench. None on the north side. They didn't even appear to be students, and sat the entire game.

You're right, the "seating" argument is lame. We've had plenty of lively nights of student participation in the past, in the same building, with the same seating.

I heard Keith say that this was a "responsive" crowd. I didn't see it. I thought it was dead for its size. I've seen better electricity in that arena with much smaller crowds.

I've been saying it for awhile folks. Increase student involvement, increase student involvement, increase student involvement.

I don't know how we breed a sense of community, but UA needs one BADLY. We need to change the culture, and I'm not sure where it begins. Most likely with us Alumni.

We've had this discussion before. Student attendance has been very good the past two seasons.

The north end, next to the band isn't for students. Its for possible recruits and other visitors of the team. But something definitely needs to change with the student seating set up.
