Quarterfinal Matchup vs. Ohio

I thought I'd go ahead and start it because there is a game this evening gentlemen.

At first I absolutely did not want to play Ohio again. The Bobkittens will be out for revenge after our three-game sweep of them last year. Watching the game last night, both Miami and Ohio looked tired. If there is any advantage the Zips have in this matchup it's utilizing the bench. With Reggie Back, I like our chances in this game.

Any word on Jake? Who's going? What's your keys to the game?

I would attend to agree with that. Ohio looked absolutely terrible last night against Miami, but good enough to beat them.

I know a lot of MAC fans sometimes make an issue out of "bye teams" as if they came out flat...ran the stats and since 2005 the team that came of a bye in the MAC-T won the first game 26-10 out of 36 matchups. I'd imagine the Zips are not a pleasant team to face after a bye.

No odds yet. Below is a quick review of tonights game as Mark sees it.

Hopes were high for Akron entering the 2013-14 season where many expected the team to challenge for the MAC title. The Zips were likely a victim of their past success and they weren't quite as dominant as we have been accustomed to seeing which meant several closer then expected contests. However, a 20 win season with a 12-6 conference record which secured 4th isn't all gloom and doom. This team excels at the defensive end and seldom gave up more then 65 points which is key in the playoffs to give guys like Demetrius Treadwell (14.7 ppg) and Quincy Diggs (12 ppg) combined with an adequate supporting cast a great chance at winning. If you know anything about Ohio basketball it's to never count them out. This season hasn't been typical with some poor performances combining with some inconsistent play but at the end of the day here they are in the second round of the postseason following a 63-55 victory over Miami (Ohio). It wasn't the best of performances but Ohio's 39% shooting meant a few more threes and foul shots which was eough to overcome the Redhawks 33% accuracy. Leading scorer Nick Kellogg pumped in a game high 20 points with seven yanks followed Javarez Willis and Maurice Ndour netting 13 and 12 points with Ndour posting eight boards.

I'm really nervous about this game.

Me too. I just don't like that they can be good inside and/or outside. It also worries me that they had an off shooting night last night.

The Zips need to be on their game tonight. We need Tree to take the ball to the rim and not settle for so many jumpers and we need some outside support and turnovers created by the D.

Anybody else find it odd that this is called a quarterfinal? Quarterfinals traditionally are eight teams playing four games (hence the 'quarter'), but there are only two "quarterfinal games". I think they should rename this round. I know its not really that important of a distinction but it is another oddity with this tournament format.

OU has had to play 3 times since we last played, including just stepping off the court about 16 hrs. ago. That matters when it's March. There's a reason why those two teams shot 33% and 38% from the field last night. And adding a 4th game to their agenda in a 6 day period is likely to only make the problem worse, especially against a fresh team that can play great defense.

So, I'm not surprised at all that the bye team has won a majority of these matchups. And it should be an even bigger issue with the new format than it ever was before. That's why I am more concerned about Friday than I am about tonight.

Use our depth to our advantage, and don't waste too many possessions without getting shots, and we win this game handily.

Additional Note: Even Kellogg, who is a great shooter, was 1 for 8 from 3-point range last night.

i'll be there with a couple of fellow alumni, at the Clevelander. Then going to the game. This game always gets me a little uneasy. OU tired or not....they have that in game rhythm....i akron will be well rested so.....they should attack the hoop! this fade away BS is relied on too much. oh yeah.......hit your free throws!!! there important in this tourney! GO ZIPS!!!!!!!!

If you look at the MAC bracket it is listed as "Third Round" not quarterfinals. It also says "Third Round" on my ticket.

As long as the Zips win tonight, I will be there tomorrow. Couldn't get my car fixed in time to take the trek to Cleveland(Hopefully a friend of mine will help me out tomorrow if it still isn't fixed in time). I'm hoping for an Akron doubleheader tomorrow!!!!!!!!

This is a completely different game if a respectable free throw percentage is made. It's been this way all year - it was this way last year. Keith is a great coach, but they need to seriously address this consistent weakness for next year. That said, let's make some and win this thing!
